RP: A Ghoulish Endeavor
Characters: Faye, Open
Time/Date: Noon-ish, October 20
Location: Algul Siento, Faye's room (#513)
Warnings/Rating: None, yet. TBD?
Summary: Faye has found the Halloween store and avoided the network. This proves to be an unfortunate combination of circumstances.
Status: Player drop/Closed
[ So, it's a day late. My eyes were made of fail last night. ]

It began as a general, boredom-driven exploration of the new island. Then there was a detour into the mall, the discovery of a Halloween-themed shop, and... Well, now it was a horribly-timed attempt at creating the first good event since her arrival on the island.

Faye hadn't bothered with the network yet. All the talk of gigantic bears, earthquakes, and not knowing which island would be attacked had quickly become a source of agitation and fright; she didn't feel the need to deal with it on this particular day.

Unfortunately, it was the worst day possible to make such a choice. Unbeknown to her, people had apparently died horrible, disturbing deaths just as she had feared they might. People had lost friends, family, lovers, and everything in between. And she... was flouncing around, partaking in festivities surrounding a morbid holiday.

Normally, she didn't even like Halloween. It had nothing but negative connotations after the incident with Vincent (even more now that she'd witnessed the fight between that bastard and Spike). But these weren't normal circumstances. Nothing good had happened so far - at least nothing beyond certain human interactions - on either island. Even if in the name of one of her least favourite holidays (aside from, ironically enough, Valentine's Day), this was at least something pleasant.

After she had her room set up, she'd take some pictures and let everyone else know of the new shop so that maybe a little fun could be had. Or go back for more candy then let the others know. How could harm possibly come of it? After all, there weren't any nano-machines floating around under the guise of lymphocytes, waiting to infect and kill everyone. Not this Halloween.

Or maybe there were. She had no way of knowing and preferred to assume the least devastating scenario.

Thus, Faye had decorated the inside of her room and now stood outside her door, making it look much spookier than normal. There were some cutesy decorations, some darker decorations, and even a giant ghost sticker made to look as if it were sneaking into her room via the crack in the door. Now, she worked to tack purple lights along the doorway. The top was taken care of, leaving just the sides and figuring out a means of routing a power source to them.

As she worked, Faye hummed and swayed her hips... Or, as others might view the matter, she stood there, looking and acting completely unaffected by the destruction of the old island.

Ambrosius had just stepped through the doorway, into the corridor, to take Didymus to the moving room and downstairs to explore the jungle, when he heard ... singing? Given everyone's mood ever since the video had been posted showing the destruction of the old island, that was quite the last thing he had expected to hear.

Didymus steered his steed toward the moving room, but he pulled Ambrosius back, coming to a slow stop, when he saw the woman who was stringing ... something ... outside her door. What she was hanging at present did not concern him nearly so much as the things that she had already hung, however, and his muzzle opened in silent horror. A ghost ... skeletons ... grave markers? This was ... this was not right.

"Mi-milady?" he asked, uncertainly, as he continued to stare. Did she attempt to mock the others' grief? If so, she was well on her way to accomplishing that endeavor. Didymus knew some on the island -- namely, the knave with whom he had been forced to collaborate after the casting of lots -- would have exulted in such a thing, but. Well. He did not like to think there were that many on this island who were truly so callous.

Faye had seen images of the fox-person on the network, but had never actually expected him to... really look like that. She turned enough to get a good look at him and the dog he treated as a horse, paused to convince herself that his existence wasn't completely impossible, then offered a nod of acknowledgment.

"Call me Faye," she said, returning her attention to the stringing of lights. She knelt down to tack the pieces closest to the bottom of the door and slip the end of the plug underneath. Or, rather, she attempted to slip the plug underneath the door only to discover that it was a bit too thick. With a frustrated sigh, she glared at the offending item; but since it still wouldn't fit, she decided to tack the other side of the light string and figure out how to plug in the decoration afterward. Maybe the furry guy could offer advice.

Or maybe he was just a Halloween decoration, himself... and a highly realistic one, at that.

"Did you need something... or you just admiring the decorations?"

Didymus gave an absent sort of nod when the lady said that he could call her Faye. That, well, yes. He would call her that, if she preferred. He watched, muzzle still hanging open, as she went determinedly about her task, wondering idly what the two-pronged device was that she had tried to forced through the gap underneath the door.

When she asked if he was just admiring the decorations, however, he shook himself out of the temporary distraction. "Well, I, er..." he began, frowning. 'Admire' was not the precise word he would have chosen, no. "The decorations are, I should think, a bit ... untimely," he said at last, before shaking his head.

Faye's eyebrows furrowed and she turned once again to face him. "Untimely?" she asked, pausing to consider. She knew Halloween wasn't coming up immediately, but it seemed close enough to warrant decoration. Maybe he didn't know how close the holiday was, she reasoned. Or maybe he was confused, and the Halloween in his world took place much later. Given that he was a talking fox, it seemed possible.

"Halloween's only a little more than a week away," she said, shrugging. "There's a store full of this stuff in the mall." As if to prove her point, she slipped a hand into the pocket of her shorts and pulled out a piece of taffy wrapped in orange-and-black striped paper.

"See?" She offered the treat to him, though she had to wonder if there was anything in it unfit for consumption by anthropomorphic canines.

Didymus knew nothing of this Halloween, or indeed what the colorful object in her hand was meant to signify. He stared at the thing she offered him for a long moment, however, before shaking his head. He didn't need to work out her meaning, he didn't think, to know that her choice of decorations -- this Halloween, notwithstanding -- were in very bad taste indeed.

"Nay, milady," he answered, shaking his head again. "I ... considering what hath come to pass ... dost thou think these adornments are well suited to the circumstances?"

Faye shrugged when he refused the taffy. Rather than putting it back into her pocket, she unwrapped it and placed it in her mouth. There really was no sense in letting good candy go to waste, after all, and it was likely to get all mushy and gross if she left it in her pocket for too long.

"Huh?" She asked first, responding almost immediately to the confusion his question created. "What, because we've been split between islands?"

Her expression skewed as she considered that option. Why would it be a problem? Nobody was dead. The island hadn't yet caved in on itself. Why should they all mope around miserably because of a simple separation? There were even video-based communications, now... As far as she knew. It didn't cross her mind that a lot could have changed since the last time she checked the network.

Did she ... not know? Didymus blinked up at the lady and then shook his head. Well, that was far preferable than thinking she had put up such adornments to mock those who had lost someone, at least.

"Nay, milady," he said gently, shaking his head once more. "Because the other island hath met its destruction. The quaking earth hath sent the hotel tumbling to the ground, and a mighty wave hath swept away the remnants." He frowned as he blinked again, casting another glance at her door before shaking his head yet again.

Faye stared at the little fox-man as if he'd said something that was completely impossible. Her eyebrows furrowed and she shook her head, frowning slightly. "That's not funny," she chided him. But... he didn't seem to be joking. He wasn't smiling, and the way he looked at her door...

She released the string of lights and shook her head again. Just because Spike was safe on this island didn't mean she felt nothing over the loss of others. She even felt a wave of guilt over what she realized really was horrible timing for the nature of her decorations. Not enough to take them down, but... She surely hadn't intended to be so callous.

"Are you sure?" she asked, hoping that maybe it was just a vicious rumor.

"Nay, milady -- 'tis no jest," Didymus answered heavily, followed by heaving a sigh. So she hadn't known, and as relieved as that knowledge made him -- that she wasn't merely mocking those who had lost a loved one -- he didn't particular care for being the bearer of bad tidings, either.

When she asked if he was sure, Didymus nodded sadly, with another sigh. "Our jailers hath posted a moving portrait of the destruction only this morn," he said, nodding slowly, and made to draw the device from out his doublet to show her, if she were inclined to witness the carnage with her own eyes. He stopped shortly, however, reasoning that she would likely look in her own time, whenever she felt up to such a thing.

Faye sighed, uncertain whether she was more upset or angry. Their captors had intentionally set up just such a situation, hadn't they? The entire point was to catch someone off-guard, hope to make them appear callous when they decided to celebrate a morbid holiday... Or, well, even if that wasn't the point, she was still angered that they'd only moved some of the rats to a safer cage.

"I... can look later. I guess," she said half-heartedly, holding one hand out in a gesture to indicate he needn't reach for anything. Granted, it was a complete assumption that he had stopped short of reaching for a phone, but she didn't want to take any chances. It had been bad enough watching Spike's apparent death when she knew he'd survived the confrontation; watching the actual demise of so many people just wasn't something she wanted to do. Even if there was the opportunity to pick it apart and hope there were flaws to point toward a hoax.

"This makes me feel like an ass," she muttered, glancing back toward her door. Though still unwilling to take it down, she did feel a slight tinge of resentment toward the festive display at the moment.

"Thou chastiseth thyself overmuch, milady," Didymus answered in a soothing tone, with a shake of his head. "Verily, t'was no way for thee to know if thou didst not read the network afore now."

Though he wondered why she made no move to take down the offending adornments. They had made her happy, of course, if the singing earlier had been any indication, but now? Frowning, Didymus thought of offering to assist her in removing the decorations, but he would have been little help at all, due to his stature.

"I am sorry," he added quietly, after a moment, shaking his head yet again. "I had no wish to be the bearer of such sad tidings."
