Summary: Lily and Dave are on patrol when the dementors almost double
Status: Complete
She'd rolled out of bed around dinner time and had something to eat. She'd tried to chill a little, had hunted around for John (but not very hard), and eventually wound up flopping on the couch in the rec area, listening to the kids and their games and whatever else was going on.
Around eleven thirty, she'd gone to fetch Dave, and they'd practiced a little with their magic to make sure they had everything down. Apparently, the other wizards (sorcerers, whatever) could make functioning patronuses.
When the shift change went down, Lily wandered outside with Dave. She flicked her wand to set her monkey running, and flicked it again so Dave could have one. "No monkey jokes," she cautioned him.
Even here, even with the patronuses capering around, she felt ... apathetic? She wasn't depressed, she just ... felt kind of down. She knew it was the dementors, but "sad" wasn't something Lily Luna Potter wore well.
Just about one AM, she felt something change. Something raised the hairs on the back of her neck, and she cast a lumos. She lifted her wand, and she saw not the seven dementors that they'd been keeping an eye on and fending off from the hotel as well as they could ... but an even dozen.
A strange 'hurk'ing sort of sound caught in her throat as she stared at the dementors drifting her direction. She swept her wand to send her monkey in their direction, watching as Dave's monkey followed hers toward the black mass floating toward them. She was frigid though, absolutely frigid, and she saw her monkey hesitate. Happy thoughts. She struggled to find some. She'd had a good life, really. The worst she'd had to deal with was disappointment in not making the quidditch team her second year, a bit of aggressive teasing from James when she was growing up. Her parent's divorce.
Lily staggered a little. The monkey glanced back toward her before it faded a shade. "Call my dad," she mumbled to Dave. She wanted to try to keep up her patronus, but she just ... couldn't. All around her was cold and dark and sad and fear and ... cold. She was on her knees then on the ground, her eyes closed as soft whimpers parted her lips, her breath visible in the icy air before her.
Dave was typing as fast as he could, his fingers numb. He didn't want to leave Lily alone, and his monkey was standing up all right, but he wasn't sure how long that would last. He sent off an urgent message to Harry before he scooted forward to try to get Lily away from a dementor that was hovering disturbingly close to her. "Shoo!" he said as he waved his arm, his monkey mimicking the gesture -- he was waving his ring hand, after all.
The great dark things backed off a little, but Dave didn't know how long he could keep them away. Not with Lily curled up and sobbing on the ground, not with his own happy thoughts so hard to cling to.
