Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

He gave Chase a skeptical look. "Yes," he said simply before he returned his gaze to the area around them. "These creatures are as infants, struggling to deal with emotions they cannot handle. It clouds their judgment, makes their actions predictable. The only thing they have working in their favour is their appearance, and their general strength and stamina. Overcome that..." he shrugged. "They'll fall."

His gaze returned to Chase briefly as he shrugged. "Though I imagine that you are aware of that. It is easy enough to notice. How many have you killed already?"

It was a genuine question of curiosity - he assumed Chase had killed at least one or two.

Chase shrugged. He didn't want to say he hadn't killed any, but he hadn't. "I don't think my assets are really suited for killing the things." Pushing them back, maybe, binding them up, sure, but he didn't think he could get his power to kill them. He'd killed one kid, back home but that had been a high school kid he'd pretty much literally scared to death. Not some crazed killing machines.

But maybe he just hadn't tried hard enough. "I haven't exactly been hunting them down," he added before he shrugged again. He would have put his hands into his pockets, but given that it would waste time pulling them back out if he was about to be attacked, he simply let his hands rest at his sides.

"I ... encountered one," he continued. "Saw it up close and decided that they weren't the sort of things I could handle. So I decided to just come inside and hang out here." Which didn't explain, really, why he was in the lobby if he wasn't hunting them, but ... there it was. Maybe he was just curious and wanted to see what was going on.

Hiei suspected that was code for 'I do not possess the necessary skills to kill them' but... he had noticed that some of the magical individuals had encountered difficulties with driving the reavers back. Perhaps you could be very skilled in that area, and still useless against the creatures. Or perhaps he was merely making excuses for a man who was very good at disguising how much power he actually had.

He nodded to Chase's statement. "They seem to epitomize everything disgusting about humans," he muttered in annoyance. "Cannibalistic, unable to control themselves, foolishly lustful," his lip curled upwards in disgust. "I'd kill them all, if it wasn't a foolish task to enter into single-handedly."

He moved his hand from where it was hovering just over his sword to show Chase how it was wrapped tightly in sacred bandages. "They crippled me," he said simply. "My ability to summon the darkness and demons from below has been lost. I heard they had done the same to others."

It was half a question, but not entirely.

Chase nodded. "I heard that, too," he agreed. "Seems selective though. One of those ... sometimes it works but not if it's going to make this easy sort of situations." He grinned. "Makes me wonder how they do that." How did they do that? How did they turn powers on and off, seemingly at random? They had to have something to do it, and Chase was curious.

If they could figure out what it was, they could figure out how to undo it - in theory - and maybe turn the tables on their captors.

That would be nice.

He looked around the lobby and glanced to Hiei before he grinned. "Guess I shouldn't keep you from getting on with your clean up efforts then," he said before he flexed his fingers, letting his power creep a little closer to the surface ... just in case.

Hiei shrugged slightly to both statements. While he was not a big fan of the power limitation, he also wasn't certain that a solution could be found to fix it without reaching out to those in charge and killing them slowly, and in order to do that he'd have to get off this island, and in order to do that the traps would have to be disabled longer than for a simple reaver attack, apparently, as he'd been able to find nothing beyond where the traps had been set.

The second statement he shrugged to simply because he did not care what Chase did. He was here to make it known that he was no enemy of the group so that if he did need their help later, he may have a team to rely on. On the very slim chance that he needed it.

"Good luck, on your own efforts," he said with a nod of his head. He did manage to refrain from adding a 'you'll need it' which he was somewhat proud of himself for, before moving on.
