Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

Faith, Regulus, Mal

After the shit that had gone down on the third floor, Faith had really needed a minute. Mal hadn't looked too pleased at the idea, but he'd agreed and Faith had known that he could really use a breather too. She didn't think it would ever matter how many dead bodies she saw, or how many creatures she killed, it would still be rough when you'd known them, however briefly. She swore she'd make those bloodthirsty beasts pay, and she was not talking about the reavers.

She'd headed up to her room, which she'd just needed to see was still in one piece, and reloaded her gun to make it seem like the trip had had a purpose and appease the old man she was tagging along with. It didn't take very long, and she was grateful for the breather, offering Mal a small smile which he returned with his typical curt nod. She rolled her eyes.

"You gotta learn to loosen up," she muttered. "Go get laid or something."

Mal's expression was priceless, though it did remind Faith of something and she slipped across the hall holding up one finger to indicate to Mal she'd only be a minute, rapping on the door lightly. She was pretty sure that was where he'd be.

Regulus heard the knock. While he assumed reavers would be far less polite about it, he still wanted to be careful. Wand out, he slipped over to the door and peeked through it, opening it slowly when he saw it was Faith there. "What?" he asked sullenly.

Mal honestly thought this was getting ridiculous. He'd agreed to the break because they both could use a minute to regather their thoughts, not so that the girl could lecture her boyfriend about getting somewhere safe, or helping out or something. If the kid died because he was too stupid to get to a safe place, that was not Mal's problem.

He heard a sudden noise behind him, and swore rather loudly in Mandarin, out of instinct turning and pushing Faith back against the wall as a crowd of reavers burst out of the stairwell they'd just come up. He fired his gun a few times, but sudden words behind him caught his attention, and he jerked suddenly to see what it was.

He wasn't sure exactly what happened - tore a muscle in his neck, was his first guess - but searing, blinding pain suddenly overwhelmed him and in the same movement of reaching up to clutch at the spot where the pain was originating from, he tried to turn his head back the other way and lost his balance, finding himself careening into the wall and smashing his head.

Coupled with the exhaustion they were all suffering from and the lack of food he'd consumed in his worry over the last few days, the sudden jarring sensation of smashing his head sent him over the edge, and all he saw was black as he tumbled to the floor.

Faith was only half aware of Mal's issues, having stepped a few steps forward to shoot at the approaching reavers. There were 3 or 4 of them, and she was starting to get concerned when her eyes caught the movement of one of them at knee level, and her horror suddenly intensified as she saw one of the reavers chewing on the toes of his left foot. She screamed, trying to simultaneously pull Mal away from them and shoot at the reavers, but it became clear that she did not have her head in the game. She was overwhelmed, and that was when she started to feel them tugging at her arm. She screamed as she felt an entire chunk of skin get pulled off, the blood seemed down her arm and staining it red.

"Avada Kedavra!"

It was the first time he'd cast it, but he knew the motions well enough. This had nothing to do with feelings, he told himself, and everything to do with the fact that he was tired of being here, and tired of having to constantly worry about what was going on. It was worse than home, because there really was no escape, and there was no possibility of an ally on the other side who would shelter you if you defected. There was just death, and fear, and wishing for it to be over, and he found himself suddenly furious with the situation. He watched with great satisfaction as the reaver that had been tugging at Faith fell to the ground, presumably dead - or at the very least, heavily stunned.

Aware that the pulling at her arm had stopped, Faith fought through the pain to lift her gun again, firing twice at the reaver Black had shot at to make sure it was dead before firing at the other two who were scattering. She wasn't sure if she hit them or not, but they were gone shortly after that. She collapsed back against the wall in pain.

She'd have to get herself and Mal down to one of the medical centres, which was really going to be a bitch if she wanted to use the stairs (which she did - she'd heard about an incident earlier with someone waiting for the elevator and a group of reavers jumping out) but for right now, she just needed another minute to breathe.
