Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

Jaime, Kaylee, open (317)

She'd been expecting the reavers to get into the hotel all along, but that had been Mal's fault. Mal always assumed the worst in any situation, and since Jaime had first told him they're next worry would be reavers, he'd been planning for the eventual break in. The unfortunate thing was that reavers were clever under all that hate and rage - they had to be, given some of the attacks they'd been able to pull off - and would be able to eventually get around the defenses they'd put up.

Well some of them, at least. Kaylee was secure in the knowledge that the magical barriers would likely be an effective stopgap against the reavers. The problem would be if they killed off everyone outside of the saferoom, and those inside of it starved to death waiting for the reavers to go away.

But she supposed that was neither here nor there.

She hadn't slept much during the night, mostly staying awake, turning the gun that Mal had given her over in her hands and staring at the door. She knew she should try to sleep, but... she just couldn't right now.

When the phones had gone off, she'd glanced at hers first and felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her. She closed her eyes and heaved a shudder, but she'd been better prepared for this eventuality than some of the others, and she trusted Mal and Jayne could handle it, no matter what state they were in. And they weren't the only ones in the hotel who had some kind of battle experience, though it was beginning to feel like it.

Her eyes drifted over next to her where Jaime had been sleeping a moment before, and the poor girl didn't look very good. Kaylee swallowed thickly, reaching over hesitantly to try and pull Jaime into a hug. She didn't know if it would help Jaime, but it would certainly help her right now.

Jaime jerked a little when Kaylee touched her, twitching away from the contact before she brought herself back to reality. She stared at Kaylee with huge, frightened eyes. "I don't want him to die," she whispered, well aware that Kaylee - entirely too perceptive Kaylee - might have an idea of just who she meant. She'd been getting sloppy as far as keeping her thoughts about Mal to herself, and she knew she'd dropped a few telling statements that she'd saved badly, making them even more obvious.

She eased into Kaylee's embrace, pressing her cheek against the older girl's shoulder, clinging to her and trying hard not to think about the noises in the hallway, the shots she could hear firing ... everywhere. Their hallway, upstairs, downstairs, echoing in the stairs. She heard screams - though those might well have just been in her head. "I'm scared," she breathed as she cried against Kaylee's shoulder, clinging to her like she was drowning and Kaylee was the only thing keeping her afloat.

Wrapping her arms around the girl, Kaylee just held her for a moment. She knew what it was like to worry about people all too well - she'd done enough of it at home, and done enough of it here to be an expert on the subject, really. But she also knew something else, too, that Jaime hadn't learned yet.

"He won't," she said simply. "Man's a boomerang. Y'think he's down for the count, and he pops righ' back up t'keep fightin', grumblin' 'bout bein' down for them two seconds. Only way he'll even get a scratch's they sneak up on him, an' I reckon folks with him won't let that happen. He ain't stupid, Jaime, knows how t'handle himself."

Her lips quirked upwards in a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "Even if the worst happens, Simon'll fix him right up. Promise."

The worst. If the worst happened. The worst was him dying, and she didn't think even Simon the amazing could bring Mal back from that. She wondered if Kaylee was saying all this to make her feel better, or if it was at least based in reality. If Mal was really that resilient.

"He can't plan for everything," she pointed out realistically if not optimistically. "And what if the captives ... do something? Like what if some of the bullets are fake, or ... or the gun misfires, or ...he runs out of ammo or there are too many?"

She drew back slightly, wiping her sleeve under her eyes. She didn't want to think those things, but those were just a few of the utterly horrible scenarios running through her mind.

"You gotta trust me when I say he's been in worst situations than this before," she said, thinking back over all the jobs that had gone south. "Been shot at more'n once, died more'n once, and he keeps bouncin' back from it. We're the only ship we know of that's survived direct confrontations with them reavers - twice - an' lot of that's cause of Mal jus' knowin' what t'do, and how t'keep everyone safe. He's not goin' out there alone, and he ain't comin' back dead. M'sure of it."

She knew that her words probably wouldn't be enough of a comfort for Jaime, but she had to say them anyway. She hoped that Jaime could trust that Kaylee meant every word, and wasn't just saying it to try and make her feel better. She really couldn't imagine a world where Mal was dead.

"How ..." Jaime trailed off. She probably didn't want to hear about how Mal had died. The idea of Mal being dead kind of terrified her and put her mind in a dark, dark place. Of all the people here for her to fixate on ... but maybe that was it. Maybe she wanted him because he wouldn't want her, and she wouldn't have to actually worry about being rejected.

Most of the time, she was mostly okay with the abandonment thing, but she still didn't like taking chances. And Mal wouldn't be interested. So she'd ... sit here, and worry about him, and hang on to Kaylee, and ... that would be that.

"I don't want to hear about bad things," she decided. She flinched and huddled closer to Kaylee when she heard something slam against the wall just outside the door. She heard pained screeches, and then a gun shot, and for a few seconds ... silence. Then, further down the hall, more shots.

She wondered if any of them were Mal. She wondered if reavers used guns. She wondered things she didn't want the answers to, and she clung toKaylee.

Kaylee knew that Jaime didn't really want to hear about the time that Mal had died, partly because she knew the story, and partly because Jaime wouldn't ever want to hear about the time that Mal died. The memory of it sent a shudder through her - that was also the day that she'd learned about River and her... knack for killing. They'd all since adjusted to it, of course, but the memory of that event was also a bit chilling for Kaylee. She wondered where River was now - if she'd managed to slip her guardians and head out into the fray, like she wanted to, or if she was still stuck somewhere under someone's supervision. Maybe she'd headed into the other saferoom with Kyle, but Kaylee doubted it.

"Okay mei mei," Kaylee said softly, closing her eyes and wincing as she held Jaime closer at the sounds in the hall. She swallowed thickly and tried to think of something that would make Jaime happy.

"Y'know," she started, hesitating only briefly before leaning in a bit more to ensure that they wouldn't be as easily overheard. "River calls you his. Speaks of it like it's only a matter of time before the two of you get together. Can't be convinced otherwise, no matter what I say. Reckon that... means somethin', even if you don't."

Jaime shook her head slightly. The words were nice, even if they weren't true. Jaime could think of any number of reasons people wouldn't want her. But she thought telling Kaylee that Mal wasn't interested in was going to open a discussion she didn't want to get into. She also wanted to say River didn't know what she was talking about, but River had proven often enough that she did.

She also thought to say that it wouldn't matter in the end, because she was surely going to be sent to her own home, and not to Mal's ... though that would have been nice. Latching onto that thought, Jaime clung to the idea of it. of Mal, living through this, of Jaime going home with Kaylee and River and Mal, and being useful on their crew, helping them with jobs, things like that.

"Guess we'll see," she said. It was the most positive thing she could manage, but at least it wasn't something negative.
