Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

Magius, Lily, Open To all!

She supposed he had a point with that. It might not work or it might muck up his own magic - and she'd hate to be responsible for any sort of failure of his magic. So she nodded to his reasoning.

"As well as I can be," she admitted, her eyes dropping briefly before she glanced up to him. She hoped someone thought to move the body, though if they hadn't, she would. She could at least ... keep her corpse safe until they could bury her.

Bury her. Lily's shoulders slumped at the weight of the first casualty, at being the one to discover it, and she tried to shake it off. Magius should go, and ... help out. She would accompany him if she didn't think it best she simply stay put and stay safe.

"If you need ... anything else, I'll be in here," Lily offered.

He nodded, eyes moving around until he took saw the fallen woman. His face firmed up, then he nodded. "Lock well and be careful. I'll clear the level before I go up or down any more."

He smiled at her, warmth there. "You do us good holding the line of your magic."

He looked around again before moving toward the end of the hall, beyond their fallen comrade's body. "Fare thee well, milady." He would come back and make sure the woman's body was taken care of, as soon as he knew the way in was safe again...and he would learn her name to remember it.

Lily nodded, offering him another tense smile before she eased back into her room, closing the door behind herself. She stayed close to it, pressed her ear to it to listen, and closed her eyes as she fought back a wave of nausea and fear.

Slipping her wand out, she pressed her back to the door and braced her feet against the carpet. Her eyes opened slowly, and she listened, and she waited, and she reached out her magic to feel the wards, to make sure they stayed up, and stayed strong.

He moved along that hall, feeling his own magic out toward what must lay ahead. Somehow, they had gotten in, but how? Lily was someone he felt an almost sureness of. If she said there were wards, then they were there, but something had compromised them.

His hand tightened on the silver dagger as he crept past Susan's body. "May Paladine welcome you into the next world, comrade." His whispered words were all he spared as he concentrated his senses ahead once more, for whatever, or whoever, might lay ahead...
