Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

She wasn't sure why, exactly, she thought it appropriate to stay in her room during the attacks, except that she locked the doors well and trusted they were strong enough that they would repel the creatures. Besides, magic? What good was magic? She had never witnessed magic before herself, or anything of the sort really, besides some slight of hand card tricks that she would spend hours working out in the privacy of her own home. Magic, she had learned when she had grown from a child into a woman, was reserved for fairy tales only, though if it provided some people with the illusion of further safety then she saw no harm in disproving it.

It wasn't until the noises started coming, and the sound of wood splintering hit her ears that she realized what true danger she was in, staying here. She needed to get downstairs to one of the safe rooms, and she needed to get there fast. She bolted for her door instantly, and took to the stairs as soon as she reached them. There were no reavers on her floor, thankfully, but her noise on the stairs caught the attention of some who then started to converge on her location.

She'd made it to the third floor, and had just wrenched open the door and started to run down the hall when she was caught by sharp claws digging into her face. She let out a bloodcurling scream, and kicked and lashed out at the creatures that were pulling at her, but there were too many of them and she couldn't break free. She both heard and felt her clothes being ripped from her, and she screamed and flailed, her arms and hands catching on sharp objects and bleeding profusely. She lost a pinky and a chunk of skin off the side of her left hand, but her entire arm was severed at the elbow by one of the swinging blades.

She felt herself topple to the floor, and was aware of them swarming her. She could feel them draped over here, moving in a repeating motion above her, but it was some time before her brain made the connection between the pain and pressure between her legs and the movement. She could also feel what she could swear were teeth, digging into her skin and ripping out chunks of arm, of leg, of side.

And then, very suddenly, all there was was peaceful black as her eyes drifted closed, and she felt nothing at all.
