Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

"Yeah, right..." Spike didn't mean to sound as if he didn't appreciate Ed's company, but he hardly found having a friend around to be compensation for feeling completely useless. "Nothing solves problems better than camaraderie. I'm sure that'll stop the reavers from busting in on us..."

He scoffed as he fished around in his jacket for a cigarette and his lighter, a process which was void of the usual finesse thanks to doing it one-handed. It wasn't until after he'd begun to replenish his depleted nicotine levels that he spoke, only a small bit of humor remaining in his eyes from the exchange about shoes. "I don't see why you won't just ditch the shoes. You never needed them before, and they're not doing you much good now."

"But at the same time you have your gun and I know a bit from being around you guys." Ed countered. "Plus this place is packed with ammo and guns it seems."

As for the shoe exchange that was a small moment of humor. "Maybe I should ditch the shoes, was only trying to blend in and be semi normal but maybe I lost a little of what makes me me, if that makes sense." But she had to admit, Spike does have a point. "Maybe I'll try sneakers instead of boots."

"We should just toss a few grenades at 'em and be done with it. Who's going to care about damage, if it gets rid of the damn things?" Spike, of course, was quite fond of explosions and ending things with a bang. Regardless of how he fared in the process, it was better than either sitting around doing nothing or trying to fight reavers in close combat. He'd learned the latter lesson quite extensively.

He stretched out his legs and leaned back in the chair, allowing his cigarette to balance precariously at the corner of his mouth as he spoke. (Though he closed his eyes, he was still very much awake and listening to Ed.) "You and normal don't mix, kid. If you're going to try that, you may as well take away Jet's bonsais." He laughed, though the sound seemed half-forced at best, and added in a low mutter: "Or tell Faye to give up gambling."

Really, it was hard to not speak as if the rest of the crew were there when Ed was around. It felt... strange. But not quite as strange as the blood-and-death scenario playing out around them - even if it was only strange because the enemies didn't use guns.
