Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

River, Tinkerbell, open (Emergency Medical Centre, lobby)

River had been extremely frustrated at being told she wasn't allowed to participate in the fighting, and had made a sort of vaguely threatening comment about the wards only being to keep reavers out - not keep people in - so she knew it was her own fault that she was stuck under Simon's gaze in the Medical Centre. She also knew that he wasn't really paying attention to her - she could slip away easily without being noticed - but then he'd panic and probably do something dumb, get himself hurt, and then she'd have to kill him, and it was just this whole big issue that ended up with her being stuck here.

She suspected Simon knew it, too. Which was probably for the best. His patients wouldn't benefit if he was distracted watching her the entire time.

She'd found that she was fascinated by the wards themselves, though. Magic... didn't make a whole lot of sense to her. Not really. Some of it, okay sure, you could flick a wand and tell particles to move faster and boil water. Solidifying the dust particles in air and telling them to repel anything that came close, all right, plausible. Maybe. But at the same time not at all. And yet... she could see plainly with her own eyes that the reavers would come towards her when she stood at the edge of the wards, and bounce off them. Several times. It was like an interesting game. Some of them would attempt to claw at her, or swing their blades, and she simply had to stand there and watch. And never once did the wards break.

She was not permitted to stand there for very long though. Someone inevitably got her away from the wards, indicating that she was frightening people who did not have as much trust in the magic. To be fair, she didn't really either, but she knew that she could handle herself in the event that it did break, and it was curious to watch the reaver's reactions.

On the third time she drew close to the wards, it was because something sparkly caught her attention. She stood up and moved closer to the boundary line, watching with fascination at the erratic movements of what appeared to her to be a ball of golden light. It was being pursued, evidently, by a group of reavers. It was trying to stay high above them, but they kept piling up on top of each other and their blades kept swinging, forcing the ball to dodge.

It seemed to almost misjudge distance, very near to where River was, and hit a wall, toppling down so that it was very near to her feet, though enough out of reach that she'd be in danger and outside of the magic wards should she try to reach for the ball. Though that was when she peered closer and realized to her astonishment that it was not a ball at all - but a girl, in a green dress, with wings and golden skin that was even now starting to fade as her eyes slipped blearily closed.

River didn't even have time to marvel at this before a reaver had scooped up the creature and swallowed it whole.

She screamed once, stumbling backwards away from the wards and towards the safety of the makeshift beds scattered around. The way the reavers bounced off the invisible walls was no longer fascinating. The three reavers continued to pound on the invisible glass, desperate to get in. River whimpered, softly, curling up into a tiny ball on the medbed, hands over her head as she shook a bit, doing her best to stop the tears rolling down her face.

She couldn't even watch as one of the magical folks came over to lead the reavers away to their death - her mind was swarming with images of fairies being eaten as snacks, while so close to safety, and how if she'd been quicker... she could have helped.
