Susan had been on her way to bed, intending to simply crash as she was, too tired to think about much beside that. Her steps paused in the hall though as she heard a noise. That had sounded like ... breaking glass.

Easing an arrow from her quiver, she fitted it to the bow as she started slowly down the hall. Fighting in tight quarters like this was far from ideal, but she would do the best she could. She wasn't certain what room the noise had come from, so she stood in the hallway, listening. She heard grunts and noises that she could only describe as primal, and she shuddered, her exhaustion all but forgotten. When the door - her door - burst open, Susan didn't even have time to scream. She fired one arrow very accurately, and very soundly, but before she had time to even draw the second arrow, they were on her ...

____________

Lily had slept like the dead that night, though when she woke - early - she had vague recollections of ... breaking glass and thumps. Dreams, she supposed, inspired by one of the many fears playing chase in her mind. She'd checked the network before even getting out of bed, but there were no updates she hadn't seen. She showered, she dressed, and she stepped into the hallway. She froze before her foot even crossed the threshold. Something was wrong.

Leaning forward, sticking her head out the door, she peered down the hall. First toward the end closer to her, the end with the infirmary, and then toward the other end. She clamped her hands over her mouth to trap the scream as she saw the mangled body at the end of the hallway. She recognized the girl by the bow broken over her middle, and Lily stumbled back into her room, slamming the door closed.

For a moment, there was panic. Only panic. Simply panic. The blind animal instinct to run, run far from daner before her humanity reasserted itself and she tried to think. She did the only thing that made sense just then. Reaching for her Blackberry, Lily marked the post urgent and sent only three words, broadcast to the network:

They got in

When the whole event had first started, and things hadn't seemed quite real, the doors to the safe room had been open. People could feel free to come and go as they pleased, shout across the hall to each other, share snacks. There'd been an element of safety that had meant a lot, and an understanding that they were all going through this together, and Sayuri thought that they'd been unified because of it.

When the phones had all started going off signifying that the reavers had gotten into the hotel, the chorus of beeping had been terrifying. There'd been brief discussion about it, and then the doors had been ultimately closed (but not locked). It had been a difficult decision, because they imagined that people would be flooding into the rooms with the increased risk of attack, and no one wanted to make it more difficult - particularly if there was pursuit - to get into the rooms, but... At the same time, no one wanted to watch as a bloodthirsty reaver pounded on an invisible door. They did their best to ignore the guilt, particularly when they heard audible screaming coming from the hall later. There was nothing they could do. That was why they were in the room in the first place.

Sayuri in particular was taking it harder than some of the others. Back on Earth, there would have been something that she could have done. Here, her powers were severely limited, but they were not all gone. She'd worked hard, and was starting to see progress with them. The sound of the scream, of tearing flesh and snarls, and the seemingly never-ending pounding on the door finally caused her to snap. She jumped to her feet and before anyone could stop her, she'd burst out into the hall to see what she could do to kill some of these god-awful creatures.

Alice covered her eyes, as though that would help her blot out the images she was envisioning. It wasn't her actual visions, thankfully those were still muted, but her natural imagination was bad enough. She stood up slowly, passing people with arms extended as though still trying to stop the raven haired girl from running out the door, seeming to be confused as to what had just happened, and moved to shut the door again. Suddenly another person slipped through it, seeming to be completely disoriented as she flipped out her device and wrote something before passing out. The beeping sounds filled the room, and Alice glanced briefly at her own device before finishing her task of shutting the door, and setting to work about seeing what they could do to get the woman settled, seeing that she'd fallen unconscious. Focusing on that was better than focusing on the screaming and tearing sounds coming from the hallway.

When his device went off, Mal replied by comment to indicate he was on it - sure, the more the merrier to take these things, but 2 to 4 reavers he could handle, and there was no sense in all of them converging on that location. He glanced over to see the girl - Faith - catch the comment and his reply and nod her head to indicate she'd be his back up. Girl didn't look like much, but she could dodge them blades with the best of them, throw a wicked punch that could actually send a reaver back a few paces, and shoot with the best of them, so he'd be content with that.

They moved fast, but not fast enough. Mal caught the outline of at least two female bodies in the hall, being massacred, and winced slightly. But his and Faith's aim was good and the 3 reavers fell to their weapons.

There was a brief period where they sat in the stairwell and listened for more noise before they eased their way into the hall. It seemed safe enough for now, but they could never be certain. Nodding towards the bodies of the girls and jerking his head towards empty rooms so Faith would catch the hint, Mal made his way carefully to the other end of the hall. While he was here, he may as well check in on the safe rooms.

It was only after ascertaining that they were all fine - (two of the paler, prettier residents seemed to be handling the situation with the unconscious woman, Parker, with looks that reminded Mal of Simon when he worked on extracting a bullet, even though they looked a bit young to be trained doctors) - that he moved to help Faith move the two girls into empty rooms so they could get back to patrols. It was the best they could do for right now. Later, there'd be a funeral, and mayhaps somebody'd speak, but there was only time right now to do what little they could to make sure they'd have something to bury later.

Which was a thought Mal wished he'd never have to think again.

Even in her unconscious state Parker's mind was having a field day: from dreams of the accident that killed her brother to having seen a small band of Reavers before slipping unseen into the safe room. But when she crash landed anyone could see what the last 2 weeks had done: little sleep, not eating anything beyond cold cereal, not exactly trusting people and not feeling very useful.

But the 2 raids she had gone on had helped. Being able to use her skills and be seen as an equal did help her state of mind but post raids she had slipped right back into the frozen Parker she had become. Because here there was no team to keep Parker in balance and to remind her to eat and to sleep.

Now once the Reavers bit the dust Parker would have to finally start facing her demons. But for now she would have to recover from the physical effects of the last few weeks (nothing life threating thankfully since the worst injury was a bruised rib from the landing and a lot of various cuts and bruises).
