ESCAPE THE HEAT - LAKE

FRIDAY JULY 7TH TO SUNDAY JULY 9TH

Nestled near Hogsmeade in Scotland, Black Lake offers a captivating setting for a weekend of swimming and picnicking for those desperate to escape the heat wave sweeping across the UK; Bringing the area to life once again to this picturesque area, now the students of Hogwarts have headed home for the Summer.

Reflecting the lush greenery and towering mountains that surround it. Witches and wizards gather along its shores, drawn by the allure of its cool, tranquil waters. Groups of friends and families spread out their blankets on the grassy banks, creating a patchwork of colors against the backdrop of nature's beauty. Picnic baskets burst with delectable treats, conjured or prepared with care. Laughter and mirth fill the air as loved ones bond over shared meals, their conversations intermingling with the sounds of lapping waves and rustling leaves.

As swimmers frolic in the lake, others take to the water on enchanted floating devices or boats, exploring the vast expanse of Black Lake. The rhythmic paddling creates gentle ripples, their echoes merging with the whispers of the wind. Adventurous souls may even stumble upon hidden coves or discover magical creatures that call the lake home, adding an extra touch of wonder to their aquatic escapades.

A favoured spot among the locals of Hogsmeade, many former Hogwarts students return to the place they spent countless hours as teenagers before returning in the evening for a drink at the Three Broomsticks, before finally making their way home.

Walking down the cobbled path that led from the village down to the Lake, Will had a beaming smile on his face. In his line of work, weekends off were not always guaranteed. Hell, there were even weekends that he had booked off, that he had still not gotten the chance to take due to last-minute sicknesses or emergencies. So, for Will to get a weekend off, while his friends were off too, and for it to be as sunny and warm as it was? Well, he certainly felt as though he had won the lottery with that combination.

“Come on boy, not much longer” he grinned down at Archie, offering a few words of encouragement for the little dog in front of him, clearly impatient about not being at the lake already. Not that he could blame the dog, of course, he had been feeling that way since he had practically woken up that morning.

Shrugging his shoulders slightly to shift the bag of groceries he had bought down in the village upon his shoulder a little better, he let out a small puff of relief when he saw a few small groups of people in a clearing in front of him. Perhaps he had let the excitement of the day get to him a little, but he had most definitely gone over the top on things he had bought from the shop. It was a good thing he was a wizard who could adjust the internal size of bags, or else he would have had a nightmare carrying the multiple shopping bags and the bag full of his and Archie’s things down to the lake.

Setting his bags finally down, he let out a puff of relief as he moved to remove Archie’s leash. “Well, hello Tess, are we ready to get lobster red? Or is that just me?” he grinned playfully, watching as Archie immediately launched himself at Tess, moments after being released.

After seeing how much effort Quinn and some of the others had gone to, Tess's own contribution felt wholly inadequate. Everything she had brought could be served in the container it came in or drank straight from a can. She hadn't thought to bring a folding chair - hell she hadn't even considered grabbing a blanket to lay down on the grass, and while she thought she should have gotten some credit for bringing a towel? After seeing Quinn convert the area into an outdoor living room, she doubted she'd get any. At least next time her mother asked her if a lack of marriage was a lifestyle choice, she could merely wave her hands around vaguely at her sheer existence in answer. Quinn would make a better wife than she would... though she suspected most of the women she knew would gladly point that out.

Tess hadn't been there long at least, before Will showed up. Archie already straining his lead just to get to her. Any thoughts about how she should have made more of an effort lost as she shifted her focus to the pair. She made a point of ignoring that weird sensation in her chest as he cast a shadow over her seated on the ground. A flash of irritation running across her features, though certainly more for herself than for him. If she weren't so against the idea of anyone messing around in her head? She would strongly consider engaging an obliviator.

"Who's your favourite person?" Her arms were spread wide, and yet even as she was prepared to be launched out by the dog. It didn't stop Archie from pushing her back the blanket she'd ganked from Quinn, in the mids of his ver enthusiastic greeting. "Just you..." She managed to get out between dodging a tongue that was determined to lick every inch of her face. "Half Spanish baby. I don't burn." Though she would be a nice golden brown by the end of the weekend. "Better drown yourself in sun screen unless you want every asshole at the office slapping you on the back next week." Something in the slightly wicker curve of her lips suggesting that Tess might just be among them... good thing she was holding Archie right now.

Releasing his grip fully on the shopping bag and the backpack with his and Archie’s Lake things, Will wasted no time at all in flopping down onto the blanket Tess had laid out. Sure, the heat might have been monstrous, and yes, he was pretty sure he was going to melt at some points during the last week in the office, but sat out now beside the lake, with his friends all so close to him, all of those uncomfortable memories just faded away.

Watching the way that Archie practically wrestled Tess with his love, he let out a small laugh and shook his head. “Yeah, see I did tell you, he loves you way more than he loves me. I mean, I only feed him, you’re his person,” he grinned across the blanket at her, watching the way that the little puppy excitedly alternated between nuzzling her face and trying to lick her to death.

Flopping out on his back, his knees bent, he let out a sigh as he stretched out his arms for a moment before settling back comfortably. “Alright for some. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I can sometimes tan, but there is a very thin line for me between red and will tan, and lobster red and I’ll be spending the rest of the week in cold showers” he told her, flipping his sunglasses down on his face. Which, he really really needed to do if he stood a chance of getting through the day without her catching him looking at her legs that he never realised how tanned they were before.

Tess gasped in mock shock. Cupping Archie's face as he wagged his tail so violently he made his whole body wriggle and roll with every back-and-forth swing. "A I your person?" Like she didn't both know this and love hearing Will reaffirm it. Her hands moving over him to give him a full body rub as she allowed him to thoroughly love on her. "Don't cut yourself short, Will. It's your socks he loves to destroy, not mine." Tess practically beaming at him as he joined her on the blanket, laying down beside her.

It was beyond stupid, because it wasn't like any of this was new for them. Hell, when they went drinking and there weren't enough seats to go around, Will was always her seat. She used him as a pillow when they watched movies together and she'd probably fallen asleep like that a couple of dozen times or more, and it had never felt strange. Yet she found herself painfully aware of the intimacy of them laying next to each other. Tess pointedly looking anywhere but at his mouth, as Archie kept his full weight on her chest.

The moment that threatened to become awkward was broken as Archie snuffled against her neck. Hot air and an overeager tongue causing Tess to erupt in laughter as she squirmed to leave him away from her neck. "I missed you too, buddy... but you've got me for the whole weekend." Not that anything would settle him until she completely smelled of Archie, who took a moment to look at Will with what could only be described as the smug look of a dog informing somebody, 'she's mine, not yours.' "I suspect any tan you manage to get would wash off in the shower." She ribbed, Tess's head lolling to the side to look at Will as her hands continued to smooth down Archie's fur.

Closing his eyes momentarily as he laid back on the blanket, Will let out a small sigh of relief as the soft ground underneath him cushioned him. After all of the drama of the last few weeks, it was small moments like this. Moments where he was surrounded by friends and loved ones, bathed in wonderful scenery made him truly glad to be alive. It made him appreciate things that he had taken for granted, people that he had taken for granted. Most importantly of all, it made him realise that life was in fact, far too short to not be living moment more.

“Oh yeah, he loves my socks. Cannot tell you how many pairs I went through before I learnt that bloody spell to darn my socks. Just need to find one that will put the sole on a pair of boots and I’ll be set. Archie has taken to thinking that if he hides my shoes in the morning, I won't leave for work. The problem is, he drags them around by the sole and wrecks the bloody things. Can't tell you the number of times I’ve had to take mine to the cobbler to get them fixed since this all started”

Flipping down his sunglasses to look at Tess, he gave her a look of mock indignation and disbelief. “I can tan, thank you very much!” he responded in his fake outraged voice. “As I said, there is just a thing margin for error and when I do tan it's not a tan as most people would call it. More likely a milky tea shade of tan at best. Besides, not all of us can be golden sun goddesses like you. Someone has to make you look good”

"That is because Archie is the smartest boy to ever exist." Her focus all on the dog who seemed only too happy to preen from what he knew must be compliments given Tess's tone of voice and the way she rubbed her hands through his fur. His while body rolling beneath the pleasure of the sensation. That was the thing about Dogs, she found herself thinking. They don't care how supposedly magical you are or whether your parents married well. They don't care about your gender, how you look or what you say. As long as you aren't the worst and you treat them well? A dog will never judge you and love you unconditionally. No wonder she loved Archie as much as she did.

"You can?!" Her mock shock matching his mock indignation just as she dodged another gleeful paw to her face. Archie not shy about informing her that he was far worthier of her attention than Will. "Look at that Archie. Your Dad is willing to risk looking like a fried tomato just so he can make me look good."

With an ooph from tess, Archie, who had apparently seen somebody else approaching their group, launched himself from her to race off and take up his role as greeter. Leaving the pair of them without the distraction of Archie to keep them from acknowledging their closeness. With his absence, it slammed into her so intensely that Tess drew in a slow, steady breath just to reorder her thoughts. Pushing the confusing emotions that had been twisting her into knots as deep down as she could manage.

Lightly backhanding him; "Hate to break it to you Turpin, but I don't need you to make me look good. This - " Playfully sliding her hand down the length of her body. "Speaks for itself."

It was in the moments like this, where Archie abandoned them both in favour of one another, that Will realised just how close the pair of them allowed themselves to physically get. It was crazy really, but while Archie was there with them, it was so easy to rationalise that he was doing it for the dog, that it made sense if they all sat closer together. Without him though? All he could think about was how hard his heart was beating and how she was so painfully close that if he so much as stretched his fingers, he would be able to reach out and touch her.

So, instead of confronting this truth, he did the same thing that he found himself often doing and swallowed that intrusive thought back down. Thoughts that really were not helped when she drew attention to how good she looked at that moment, basking in the sun beside him. “I’d make a comment, but I feel like anything I said would find a way of getting back to HR by Monday,” he responded with a playful grin, sliding his sunglasses back onto his face so she hopefully wouldn’t catch the way that his eyes lingered a moment too long on her legs.

Instead, he moved slightly and opened up one of the bags that he had brought with him, rolling a beer along the floor towards Tess. Opening his beer, he let out a satisfied noise, before setting it onto the ground. A hand moving to his shirt, he began to start opening a few buttons on his shirt, wanting to feel the cool breeze on his chest, before pausing. While a lot of the marks on his chest from his injury had faded with the aid of potions, they had not disappeared altogether just yet. Letting his hand drop-down, he left his shirt where it was, buttoned just so his new scars were still hidden by the fabric of his shirt.

She was working so hard not to notice their closeness that it tipped her off balance as she turned her head toward his. Suddenly aware of the gently brush of his breath against her skin as their eyes met. Everything about this was stupid, not only because she shouldn't be feeling this way. But because it was hardly as though a level of physical intimacy between them wasn't commonplace. She'd lost count of how many times he'd dragged her into his lap when they'd been at the pub and short on seats. The times she'd woken up on the sofa with her limbs completely tangled up in his. This should have been as natural as breathing, but ever since Walpurgis, things felt different.

"They'll be shocked I'm the source of the complaint rather than the reason for it." She shot back. Leaning into humour rather than acknowledging the infuriating fluttering in her chest. She was almost glad when he put his sunglasses on, cutting her off from his penetrating gaze. Tess in turn, lazily draped her arm across her eyes. Shielding herself from the harsh sun as well as buying herself a shred of cover to pull herself together. She should have been able to do it by now, she'd already run through every possibility. Drawn the same conclusion that she had in the past, that there were lines the two of them just shouldn't cross. That had been true when she'd wondered if their flirtation would ever become physical. Now? If a physical relationship could screw up their friendship, she hated to think what a romantic one could do.

She silently longed for the distraction of Archie, though it seemed he'd found himself a friend in Quinn's dog. The pup was content with the knowledge that 'Mum & Dad' were in view, even if they weren't giving him their constant attention. Which of course, left Will and Tess to try and act like nothing had changed between them.

No wonder Tess was accepting that beer as though it was the lifeline she desperately needed. Pushing herself up onto her elbows and taking a deep swig as the cool liquid trickled down the back of her throat. For just a moment, she enjoyed the feel of the warm sun as it licked her skin. The gentle breeze that teased the ends of her wavy hair as the smell of everything she had once loved about going to school here, filled her head.

Only no sooner did she think she had a handle on things than she got to see Will unbuttoning his shirt. Her gaze following the lines of ink that framed a broad, muscular chest. She'd always known he was hot, that was hardly anything new but god it felt different somehow since he was injured. As though she'd lost the ability to admire him with lust in her eyes, when other thoughts and feelings were creeping in there now. "If you want to invite the ladies to perve on you, you're going to have to drop more than a few buttons, Turpin. "Forcibly dragging her gaze away. Like she hadn't just been thinking about how she wanted to personally help him out of the rest of it. "This is the seventies. You can't go anywhere without seeing a chest full of hair these days." Drinking deeply in the desperate hopes that it would help to take the edge o

Letting his head roll back, Will let out a loud laugh at the thought of their files at HR. Neither of them was particularly angels between the thoroughly borderline banter and jokes, but that was just who they were. Hell, that was how the whole department was, he rationalised. When people spent most of their existence putting themselves in mortal danger, something had to give, and often that meant that senses of humour could be rather….warped, among other things. “Behave you, like my file in HR isn’t as thick as yours. Perhaps one year at the Christmas party we should sneak in and see who has the biggest file in the department?” he suggested, a playful grin on his face as he did.

Settling back on the blanket, the gentle breeze coming off of the lake and cooling his face, Will felt a contentedness, unlike anything he had felt for a long time. Sure, it might have taken a slight near-death experience, but finally, he found himself really starting to get things. He realised that sometimes the best things in life were as simple as kicking it down at the lake with a couple of four-packs of beer and a group of his closest.

Looking sideways as she commented on his chest, he laughed and shook his head at her. “Not trying to get anyone to perve on me, though, could you blame them? I’m fucking pretty” he responded with a playful grin, a hand moving up and down his body as though to highlight exactly what he meant.

While the thought filled him with nerves, his fingers moved to his shirt and quickly undid the rest of the buttons of it, revealing his chest, scars and all, but with the fabric still hanging off his shoulders. “If I burn, this is completely your fault, Harbourne, I warned you that I am easy to burn” he blurted, trying his best to ignore the nerves about getting out his chest, complete with still healing scars.

Saturday - Quinn - Open

He might have been a grumpy old prick about the whole lake versus beach argument. But in the end, Quinn wasn't one to disappoint. Especially when he got his own way. He'd gotten moving fairly early that morning, making a trip into Kenmare before heading out to Black Lake. Loading up on enough meat to feed half the people who would descend on the lake that day. By the time everyone had started to show up, he had a pretty solid setup going on. Conveniently situated in the shade of a tree, there were a couple of folding chairs, a small wireless radio, and not one but two cooling bins laid out - one with the spoils of his shopping trip, and the other loaded down with an assortment of drinks that were unshockingly, mostly alcoholic.

In the midst of all this, there was what could arguably be the mangiest-looking mut you ever saw. A dog whose collar would unimaginatively show him to be named Dog, who had taken it upon himself to greet every single person who came within chasing distance. Forcing people to pay the toll by way of throwing a stick for him before they were permitted to continue on their way. To those who had ever spent any time with Quinn outside of work? Dog would be a familiar sight. The little scamp, overly enthusiastic when it came to greeting anyone he'd met more than once.

Despite the heat and the obvious appeal of the water, Quinn parked his arse on a chair in the shade. The shirt he'd worn was quickly discarded, now hung over the back of his chair as he watched the mut bounding along the shore. Chasing game birds and people with equal fervor as his owner nursed a cold beer. Eventually, he'll fire up the barbecue and you might even get him to go for a swim, but for right now. The whole not-moving thing was really working for him.

Saturday - Quinn/M

To her credit, M had held out for all of two hours before finally deciding to leave for the lake. She was still reeling from the journal blunder from the other day that the thought of seeing anyone officeside still made her visibly tinge. Which was absurd because she was a grown woman used to dirty jokes being made on the daily. Still, she had walked herself right into that one and that didn’t make her feel any less like a dolt. But after scowling for the better part of the morning, M had finally decided to tie up her hair and fixate on baking a few batches of her dad’s biscuits for the lake. Which were some of the worst biscuits she'd ever baked. Though in her defense, they would have come out decent had the smell of last night's fish not permanently tainted her oven.

M walked with them now, her abominations neatly arranged in a ribbon-tied tin on top of the contents of a ridiculously large beach tote. She supposed it was fair that when Dog trotted up to her, he’d practically whimpered after taking one whiff of the tin. Now that hurt her heart just a little as she stooped to take the grizzled prince's muzzle into her hands. "Be glad they're not for you, at least," she cooed, scratching his bearded chin before sending him off after his stick. Instinctively, she shoved the tin a bit deeper into her tote, taking Dog’s hint for the portent that it was.

By the time she alighted on the gathering of familiars, a sheen of sweat showed on her brow. Salazar, it was hot. Naturally, her body gravitated to the slice of shade Quinn seemed to be hogging to himself, the man looking the most leisurely she’d ever seen him. All of them, honestly. It made her wonder at how long it’d been since she’d taken time for herself. "I'll give you this," plopping down onto the empty chair before fanning herself fruitlessly, "that trek would've been an absolute misery to make through the sand."

Amelia swore she could feel her skin burning before they'd even made it halfway from Hogsmeade to the lake. The wide-brim hat she wore in an attempt to provide her some cover, making a mockery of her as the sun tormented her pale, freckled skin. You'd have thought that after 25 years, she'd have known that in a battle between her complexion and the sun that she would lose, every single time. Yet just like when she was a kid, she still stubbornly refused to admit that this would only end in the misery of aloe vera and cold showers.

"We're going to need to find the biggest tree when we reach the shoreline and set up there." Amelia focused on the unsteady path that wound toward the shore. She juggled several bags of groceries from the Neep that she had stubbornly insisted on helping Fabian to carry. Amy every bit the vision of an English woman trying to go out in the sun for more than five minutes. "And please don't let me forget to keep applying sunscreen. I can hear my back audibly crackling already, and the last thing I need is to look like I've been baked in an oven. We both know I don't tan. I'm either pasty white or red and peeling."

Even on a day off, she couldn't entirely switch off but that would hopefully change once they managed to settle. Besides, it wasn't like they couldn't just walk back into Hogsmeade if they had forgotten something. "Are you sure we got enough food." As if they weren't bath carrying bags in each hand.

Walking down from the village to the Lake, Fabian wore a grin that practically stretched from ear to ear. While the chances of him being so red he would practically glow in the dark by the end of the day were high, he did not care. No, today was all about hanging down at the lake with Amy, reliving their childhood years and kicking back in the sun, without a care in the world.

Looking sideways at Amy as she spoke about shade, he smiled and nodded his head. It was probably a wise idea to at least attempt to sit in a little bit of shade for a few minutes of the day, even though the chance of burn was high, regardless. “Brought one of those little egg timers from the kitchen with me to remind us to put more sunscreen on,” he responded, shuffling the bag on his shoulder so it sat a little more comfortably. “Figured it was easier than trying to remember, because well…you know how my memory is when it comes to doing anything sensible that isn’t related to a mealtime”.

Which was probably why he had gone so overboard with making sure that they had every conceivable snack, possible. The last thing he wanted was to have to stop having fun because he forgot something stupid.

Looking at the bag on his shoulder, he smirked, before looking back at her. “Ohh, you wanted to eat as well? You should have said, these bags are just my snacks,” he responded playfully, giving her a small wink as he did. “I’m sure if we forgot something, we could always run back up to the village”

Amy couldn't mask her surprise when Fabian mentioned the egg timer, something that resembled both affection and approval softening her features. Perhaps because a part of her suspected that he might have made that effort for her. She'd been running around with The Prewett boys for as long as she could walk and talk, and it was a well-known fact that Amy was usually the practical voice of reason in their group. "Careful Fabian. I think I'm starting to rub off on you, and then Gids and Eddie will never let you hear the end of it." A little light teasing that was barely able to detract from the genuine warmth in her eyes.

As silly as it was, that one small thing allowed her to relax just a little. Knowing there was somebody else to think about all the little things so that she didn't have to. And of course, they could go back to Hogsmeade if they had to, or hopefully somebody else would have thought to bring things, but until Amelia had mentally accounted for all the things she had listed in her head? She wasn't going to be able to switch off entirely.

"Oh really?" The smile that came lit up her face, and if she could have, she'd have swung one of those bags into his chest. "And here I thought you liked my cooking." The suggestion that she would no longer do so for him, hanging in the air as she surged ahead. "More for Gideon, then." She teased as she trudged down the cobbled path.

Heading finally off of the path and towards a particularly shady, but unclaimed patch of grass close to the water, Fabian felt a sense of relief when he felt a cool breeze come across the lake. It was one of the things that he loved about Hogsmeade so much. Even when the rest of the country seemed to be boiling alive, it was never quite as hot up in Scotland as it was down in the South of England. Still, there was a damn good chance whether it was hot or not, the pair of them could end up looking like a pair of lobsters by the end of the day.

“You want to be careful saying that allowed, my Mum will think of at least twenty reasons why you are wrong, and I could be a better adult like you,” he quipped back with a cheeky grin. Sure, he might have had a vaguely adult job, but that certainly did not make him particularly great when it came to basic adult things like doing regular food shops, or well….eating vegetables. Still, they were all thoughts for another day. Not a day when he got to spend the day chilling out at the lake with all of his favourite people around him.

Picking a particularly cool spot right underneath a tree, Fabian dropped down the many bags of snacks and everything else they had brought with them. “Reckon this is enough shade so that the two of us won't go crispy in about ten seconds?” he asked with a playful grin, knowing full well that the pain of them likely would still go a little pink.

"Perhaps we need to get our mothers together because mine still thinks I am a terrible adult." In truth, they just had very different ideas on what a 25-year-old woman should be, and until Amelia was married with her second child on the way, it was doubtful she could go a day in her presence without hearing a lecture. And even then, Amy was sure that her mother would merely find new things to criticise her for. Yet she wasn't about to allow the Bones Matriarch to put a dampener on this day. Amelia trying to shove the underlying issues that fueled her words aside, with a reassuring smile for Fabian.

It was only once they'd set everything down that she was able to appreciate the setting. The lush grass, the sprawling lake that from here seemed to go on forever. Memories flooded her as, with hand on hips, Amy drank in the scenery. It had been a long time since she'd found herself staring at these shores, and she could almost hear the sound of the laughter that had erupted from a much younger version of herself. Edgar, Molly, Gideon and Fabs - the latter of whom would always grab her hand and pull her along to ensure she wouldn't double-back on them.

"Pretty sure I got burned just walking from Hogsmeade." Yet she didn't sound annoyed. She would challenge anyone to feel that way here, with the nature that surrounded them teasing her senses and, for once, allowing her to forget about the enormous pile of work she had waiting on her desk. "Why did we stop doing this?" Knowing the answer even as she asked it. They grew up, got jobs, got busy. She herself was almost never available. They left school and rushed into adulthood, yet forgot to take the time for things like this. Honestly, if they all weren't working in the same department... would they even see each other as much? She couldn't remember the last time she saw Molly and the kids, outside of them coming to see Arthur at work.

"I know, coming from me, that must sound ridiculous..." She had always been the one who had excuses for why she couldn't come. "But we really should make the time somehow... especially with... everything." Her recent brush with death, pushed to the forefront of her mind before she could shake it off. Amy then dragging her gaze from the lake to refocus on Fabian - pushing a smile into place.

Drawing a large blanket from one of the bags he had brought from home, he shook it open for them underneath the trees. While the ground was soft enough, if there was one thing though that way too many summers spent beside the lake had taught him, it was that it wouldn’t take too long for the ground to scorch them or to feel like concrete underneath them.

Placing the bags down around the edge of the blanket within easy grabbing distance, Fabian plonked himself down with all of the grace that one might expect of him. Looking out across the lake, a grin spread across his face, memories of summers spent there running through his mind and filling him with warmth and joy he didn’t often get to experience.

“Knowing you, you’re probably right,” he responded with a grin, moving back to support himself on his hands. “If it's any comfort though, as burnt as you are, I’ll probably be about as bad too. Don’t worry though, I bought about a gallon of Aloe Vera gel when I was in London the other day, so if need be, we can just fill a small paddling pool with it and sit in all evening”

Perhaps it was a slight exaggeration, but Fabian was hardly one known for taking life too seriously in his off hours. The way that he saw it, he got paid to be serious at work, he didn’t care paid to be serious when he was at home. Pulling a glass bottle of lemonade from the bag, he set it down between the pair of them before popping his sunglasses on his face.

“You do realise for us to do stuff like this more often, you can’t spend your every waking hour at work, right?” he teased with a playful grin, gently nudging her with his shoulder. “You promise to actually finish work on time and there is nothing to say we could eat our dinner down here every night we’re both not working, you know”

"Seeing as you were good enough to acknowledge that I'm right. I will be kind enough to let you go first." Between her pale freckled skin and his ginger hair and matching complexion? They both knew they weren't going to be able to completely avoid a sunburn. Amelia just hoped she could get through the day and bare to have anything touching her skin for the next few.

She knew that sooner or later, this little peace they had carved out for themselves would be shattered by the arrival of others. Yet she found herself wanting to hold onto this, her and Fabian looking out over a lake they'd spend countless hours by when they'd been at Hogwarts. The sound of birds chirping. The rustle of the long grass as the wind made it dance. She knew better than anyone around her realised that she really ought to do things like this more. Take time out just to enjoy the world. To, as Rosie said, do what makes her happy instead of settling for content. She knew it logically, at least, but knowing and doing...

"For that to happen, Crouch would need to start doing his job and we all know he's too busy shaking hands to do that." It was perhaps the most unforgiving thing that Amelia said about their boss, so for her to reach this stage it must be bad. She used to think that he was just busy and that she had to learn how to manage her time better. She used to think that with time, she'd find a way to manage the increased workload and it wouldn't always be this bad. She was starting to see, however, that the problem was that Barty Crouch enjoyed the notoriety of his position. He just didn't want to deal with the paperwork.

"And we should..." Yet she didn't say it because she thought it was possible, she said it because she knew this was a subject that needed to be broached and as much as she didn't want to do it here, now. If not now? When? "At least once before I move back into my place."

He wasn’t sure what it was, but there was something about her comment about going back to her own place that was like a dagger to the heart for Fabian. It was stupid really, and he knew it. It was not as though she could indefinitely just live at his like this. She was healed now, and had been better for some time. There was no reason for her to keep staying with him. Yet, even with all of this knowledge, it did not make him feel any better.

Then again, he had always found himself drawn to Amelia, in ways that he could not quite put into words. There was just something about her, that had the ability to light up a room for him. She had always been his favourite person, and he struggled to think of any instance where that would change, even for a minute. There were of course some slightly more complicated feelings that accompanied that, but now was most certainly not the time or the place to be thinking of such things.

Instead, he tried to force himself to focus on the present, though that was not much better with talk of her moving back to her own place. His face betraying his emotions for the briefest of moments, he swallowed down that feeling and forced a smile back onto his face. “Come on Amelia, even Crouch can do without you for a week or so…..hell, even a long weekend spent at the beach like we all used to certainly has its charm” he encouraged her gently, leaning towards her and giving him a small nudge with his shoulder. “Just picture it now, you and me somewhere nice. All the junk food we would have wanted to buy as a child, and the common sense to know we should eat it all, but we ignore it anyway,” he encouraged.

After a long day of freedom at the beach with her friends, the last thing Meaghan wanted to do was go to Hogsmeade with her family. Instructed to mind Kirley while her mum set things up and out, she slouched to the water after her little brother, eyeing the lake like it had personally offended her. She shouldn't be seeing it so soon, just a week after she'd broke free. She shouldn't be seeing it for years yet, especially not saddled with the Tiny. She should be off in her new flat or exploring London or wherever the hell else she wanted to go, as graduated actual adult with a life coming on.

Hell, that life shouldn't even be coming on it should be well started a week in as it was. Meaghan had been itchy all the last month to finish school like she'd promised, like Catriona had made her promise, with the clearly stated understanding that she'd help her negotiate her contract with the Pride and get her set up in her flat. And what was her mum setting up instead? A picnic lunch. Kirley's 7th birthday party.

It wasn't fair.

"Get outta there," she said crossly as he tried to run into the water. "You don't have one of them float thingers yet and it'll end up my fault."

Sirius wasn't usually the first one arriving at things, seeing that he was mostly chronically late, or at least lazy enough not to care. That said, he was really glad Marlene said yes to a middle of the night nip in the lake, so he wasted no time apparating off with a towel around his neck. He had already gotten his shirt off when he heard a snap and turned to find Marlene appearing nearby. "Fancy meeting you here," he said, tossing his shirt to the side and working off his pajamas bottoms.

Marlene looked around in the dark before casting a quick “Lumos” to add a little light to her surroundings. Her gaze caught on Sirius, shirtless and already halfway to pulling off his bottoms. Maybe it would be polite to look away, to stare at a nearby tree instead of watching him undress. Unfortunately, polite wasn't really her forte. She smiled. “What can I say, I was homesick.” She set down the bag she'd quickly thrown together back at the flat and carefully propped up her lit wand so that it stayed upright. Then she toed off her beat-up trainers and grabbed the hem of her t-shirt, pulling it up over her head to reveal a string bikini top in bright pink. “Anyway, it’s easily ten degrees cooler out here by the water. Good call.”

"Honestly," Sirius said, glancing over his shoulder at her again and watching, in appreciation, as she undressed. Ah, she'd thought to bring a swimsuit. He had not. So then he stood there in his pants only, which in a short while once they got wet, would likely be as though he was wearing nothing at all. "And even cooler in the lake," he agreed, gesturing toward it.

She wiggled out of her denim shorts until they were down around her ankles, easily kicked to the side next to her shoes. "So? Get in then."

Marlene ran into the water, splashing through the lake and letting out a shrill squeak as the cold water hit her skin. She knew it would take longer to adjust if she took her time so instead she went in deeper until she was in up to her waist, took a deep breath and held it, then ducked down into the water so that she was fully submerged. She laughed with delight as she popped back up, shaking the water from her hair. The lake was a cool distraction from the sticky humidity and heat. She bobbed in the water, kicking her legs to stay comfortably afloat as she paddled towards him.

"So." She called out. "How's the bachelor pad?"

Sirius enjoyed watching Marlene run off into the water, squealing as she did so. He followed her a moment later, hissing at the feeling of the cold water hitting his bare skin. "Oy, fuck, shit, it's cold," he yelled out.

He knew the only way to adjust was to do what she did, dunk himself under the water and resurface. He tossed his head back, the water spraying from his hair. "Flat's good. What about yours? Hens palace and such?"

“It’s great. Small palace, at that.” It had been hard, leaving her childhood bedroom and home behind just days after saying goodbye to Hogwarts. Harder than she'd thought it would be. Packing all of her things up - clothing, raggedy stuffed animals, the posters of Quidditch players and musicians that decorated the walls - had felt permanent. Like too much change all at once. But once she moved her boxes in, the smell of curry and spices had lured Marlene and Lily down to the Indian restaurant on the corner. They found a record store and she successfully counted out enough Muggle coins to buy the new Rolling Stones album. By the time she woke up the next morning, it had already started to feel a little more like home. "Lily found it, so of course it's great.” Marlene continued. "Haven't unpacked everything yet, just the important stuff.”

"Oh yeah," Sirius said, "I've still got boxes everywhere. Not too many though, mainly just school things, and what do I need them for anymore?" He hadn't taken all that much from Grimmauld when he'd run off, mostly because he didn't need any of it. He didn't want any of it.

"Glad you like it," he said, lowering himself in the water so only his head was above the water as he started circling her with a grin. "Weird being on our own though, yeah?"

Marlene watched Sirius circle her in the water out of the corner of her eye, treading water even though if she stood straight up, the water would probably only reach her chest with her feet planted on the bottom. "Thought of selling my used textbooks back to B&B. Some wee firstie might appreciate my insightful column doodles." Sirius was behind her now, but she could still feel his attention on her. Without another word, she took in a gulp of air and dove down. For a moment, she was fully submerged... almost invisible in the dark water. Then she reached down with her hands until they connected solidly with the rocky bottom of the lake and kicked her feet up, pulling her legs together into an underwater handstand. Only her knees to her feet were visible above the water's surface, but they were straight and sure. She held it for a moment, then tucked her feet in again and righted herself, lake water dripping down from her eyelashes and nose as she came back up. She grinned proudly. "It's alright. Guess it's nice enough, not having professors breathing down our necks all the time... not that we weren't out doing what we pleased anyway."

Sirius didn't really even know where all his textbooks ended up. Shoved at the bottom of his trunks or maybe under his bed by now. He didn't remember unpacking them. "Maybe they can spend the whole term trying to figure out if your doodles are runes or just doodles," he joked.

When she dunked herself under and flipped over, Sirius laughed. He took advantage and dunked himself to wet his hair back again, instead of it hanging in his face. When they had both surfaced again, Sirius grinned at Marlene. "We're fully-trained wizards now, right? We can always do whatever we want."

Marlene angled herself towards him in the water. Freshly wet with lake water, his hair looked pitch black, slicked back damply against his head. Too slick. Too perfect. As with most things that struck her with this impression, a part of her desperately wanted to mess it up. She returned Sirius's grin with a sly, Cheshire-like smile. "Right." She agreed. "Early morning swim, for example." Her tone was nonchalant, even as her eyes glinted with something like mischief as she volleyed back her response. "And what is it you want to do now?"

Sirius chuckled as he caught her eye, caught the teasing and mischief in it. Nothing good ever happens after midnight, he could practically hear one of his stodgy relatives saying. And yet what he liked was everything that happened after midnight. Such as exactly this. He grinned. "Oh, I can think of a few things," Sirius told her, moving a little closer to her in the water.

Boys. Set it all up for them and they rarely disappointed. Still, her stomach twisted and tightened with anticipation as he began to swim closer, all inked bare skin and that sharp grin of his. It was strange to recognize the familiar sensation - the prickly, needy, impatient feeling of want and adrenaline roiling in her stomach - with regard to Sirius Black. A boy she'd known since they were both eleven, little firsties sent off to the same table at the Sorting Feast. If only her eleven-year-old self - all messy plaits and missing hair ribbons, the girl who freed the fairies from Slughorn's potions classroom and, after hearing Mulciber call Lily something nasty, had hexed him so viciously that he wasn't able to see past the pus-filled boils all over his face and she'd been given two weeks detention on the spot - could imagine that in another eight years, she'd be swimming well past midnight with Sirius Black in his soaked through skivvies... The thought was nearly enough to make her laugh out loud, but she resisted the urge.

"Get a job?" Marlene mused, mock-thoughtfully. She brought her hands up to absently adjust the swimsuit tie around her neck, shifting her wet hair over her shoulder to do so. "Do some recreational reading? Climb Kilimanjaro? Start a band? Bring about world peace?"

Sirius chuckled at her teasing. "Well, I'm not really all that eager to get a job, I'll have you know. Or do any reading for fun. And I'd probably just apparate to the top of Kilimanjaro instead of climbing, and world peace is overrated. The band idea though ..." He stroked his jaw in thought. "I'd have to learn an instrument though, I reckon."

But he didn't elaborate anymore, instead reaching out to tug at a thick, sopping strand of her hair. He twisted it around his finger. "Any other ideas?" he asked, dropping his town.

Marlene felt herself lean in towards him in the water as Sirius twirled her hair around his finger, arms lowering to wrap loosely around his neck. She stared at him with large blue eyes, nearly as dark as the lake itself in what little light there was, and - "I'm sorry, world peace is overrated?" Marlene blurted out. She paused, the slightest sliver of space between their faces. "It's world peace! Och aye, impossible, maybe, but..." She trailed off, already running out of steam and distracted by his close proximity. Her fingertips trailed from behind his neck to trace the line of his jaw, where his own hand had been a moment earlier. She leaned in a little more, weight pressing forward onto the balls of her feet to bring her mouth close to his ear. "I mean... world peace is kind of a long-term project." She conceded.

"Very long term," he agreed. "Lots of long hours and trying a lot of things before seeing what sticks." He lowered his voice, and his mouth, as he turned his head to find her mouth, kissing her slowly.

The water, though cool and fairly still in the lake without any wind this time of night, lapped up against them as he moved his arm around her lower back to hook her up against him.

Marlene smirked at the innuendo, a low chuckle in the back of her throat that went quiet as his mouth found hers. It was easy to let him draw her close, to twine her arms around Sirius’s neck and pull herself up to wrap her legs around his waist, assisted by the buoyancy of the water. It was easy to get lost in the moment. Concerns about the future, about Lestrange creeping around her friends on the journals… gone. This was different from flirting at the Three Broomsticks or even snogging him senseless in the Greenhouse. Professor McGonagall wasn’t about to pop out of the bushes to give them both detention. The sudden intimacy of the situation - so much bare skin, Sirius’s hands on her, the cool quiet of the lake - made her breath catch and her pulse quicken. She kissed him again, this time letting it deepen as she pressed her body against his so you couldn’t fit a piece of parchment between them. She felt him stumble back a step and clutched onto his shoulders. “Fuck no, no, don’t fall over.” Marlene laughed against his mouth.

Sirius had gotten pretty lost in kissing Marlene, though his mind had gone very nicely and conveniently blank. Truly. Only other times that kind of thing happened to him was in History of Magic, but that was for (obviously) very, very different reasons.

So when he stumbled a little when Marlene pushed herself more against him, it took a second before he caught himself. He laughed right back, chuckling breathlessly as he righted himself and her. "Sorry," he said, not really waiting for an answer before kissing her again.

Cook had been generous with their basket. Well, two baskets. They had packed a veritable feast for the siblings with an assortment of salads, sandwiches, and pasties. All of which Charlotte had laid out in a grand spread in an ode to Cook across their gingham blanket. There'd been so much, that despite them eating their fill (and more) she'd ended up giving the rest away. Of course, she was happy to share; she always appreciated the power of food, the way it brought people together before they scattered to the winds again.

Used to Caleb and Elijah flittering off to their groups of friends, Charlotte sat easily with her sketchbook and her charcoal. It was one of those unspoken understandings between them; sometimes the world was so overwhelming in her eyes, ears and skin—that to be alone was a comfort for people like her. She'd seek them out later. For now, she was content to have blackened fingers make quick work of each page and space, allowing the music of the world to float in and out of her awareness.
