Who: Knox and Flow
What: First date! It's rainbow time!
Where: Starts off at the Astronomy Tower
When: Around 5:00 AM Sunday Morning
Status: In Progress
Rating: PG/PG-13? SFW, I'd say.

He wasn't nervous. Really.

Fidgety, maybe, but not nervous. Knox had gone to bed last night, and while he'd fallen asleep just fine he found himself awake long before he had to be. That was when he started feeling a bit restless. After a while he'd given up on sleep, gotten dressed and headed over to the Astronomy Tower, where he was meeting Flow, early. It wasn't that he didn't think their plan would work, or that it was worth it, because he knew it would work and it was worth it; this was something he was definitely looking forward to. The thing was, Knox actually liked Flow, and he hadn't really cared all that much when it came to another person for a while. He didn't get swept up like this too often.

This was a prank, but it was also date. Their first date, and Knox wanted to do it right.

He was in his uniform, shirt sleeves rolled up about halfway up his forearms, sitting by a window. The scarf Flow had given him was loosely hanging around his neck. There was a cigarette hanging from his mouth, glowing orange at the end and occasionally dropping bits of ash; one hand was tracing shapes in the fog on the window, allowing him to get a better look outside. The bright, white snow was still covering the grounds despite the disturbance from the snowball fight. Knox smiled at the thought, imagining how it would look next to the castle's new colors. Then he imagined everyone's faces at what they were going to do, and some of the anxiousness disappeared.

This was going to be awesome.

"You fuck off," Knox replied, furrowing his brow. "And I'm not talking to you like you're a kid, I'm talking to you like you're a person. It might be news to you, but I can, in fact, be empathetic." He huffed slightly, but started walking again. "Yeah, I'm coming."

"Yeah, that's news." It didn't have a whole lot of bite to it, which made it sound pretty flat, but she cracked something like a smile anyway. "Thought empathy was something they trained out of you as soon as the Hat made its pick."

Knox snorted, shaking his head. "Nah, mostly the Hat makes it pick because you already lack empathy. Society does the trick, or tries, with all the stupid gatherings and what's 'proper' bullshit. 'Least that's how I see it."

"Glad I never had all that shit." The tension was still there, pulling the tendons of her neck up stark against the skin, but now it could be ignored. "I mean, they give it a go in school - Muggle school, anyway - but you can walk out've that."

"It's not all bad." Knox had no idea what was going to happen, but he figured going along with it was best and relaxed a bit. "I mean, the parties can be fun if you know who to mess with. Some people are really extreme about it with all that certain people have certain places in society, but it depends on the family. Not everyone believes in that. I've heard of people leaving their families behind because they didn't."

"Ugh." Flow pulled a face. "That's fucking shitty. Can imagine giving up a lot've things for principles, but giving up family - that's way beyond shitty." She turned her head, looking at him properly again. "You obviously don't, or you wouldn't be hanging around with a Mudblood off the estates. Gotta give you credit for that, I suppose. Dunno how you've managed to avoid being a pompous twat like that."

"People wonder where all the prejudice comes from, but it's society. Families that live by old fashioned ways of life, and it's a shitty cycle that doesn't mix well with current times." He laughed a little at her last comments. "My family is...I realized at an early age that a lot of what my parents, or their acquaintances, said was bullshit, so I stopped listening. I was lucky in that sense."

"Reckon I was pretty lucky, actually." She shrugged, the tension fading slightly now, and even gave him a smile, softer than usual. "I mean, there's bigots everywhere, and at home it's just like you said, too - people're just old-fashioned, like, they think you're only British if you're white and Christian and all that, and they still think women're for doing the cooking and shit like that. So I reckon I'm lucky I grew up in a family where we don't think like that."

She looked uncharacteristically reflective for a moment. "Reckon I'm lucky coming here as a Mudblood, too," she said, after a moment. "I mean, yeah, I'm a girl, but 'm white and English and tough, and I hang round with a bunch of liberals back home. You come here, you kind've realise the shit people go through when they ain't that lucky. Like Tombo and Carpie in September."

She was quiet for a second, looking at her feet as she walked, then her head snapped back up and she gave him a slightly brittle grin. "'Course, you can't dye Croyden rainbow, so I'd much rather be here."

"Everyone has their own fights," He commented, tilting his head in thought. "But it sounds like you might be a bit lucky," Knox mused with a small smile. "Especially these days, having the freedom to be who you want and all that."

He glanced over at her briefly. "I can only imagine- I mean, I've seen bits and pieces of muggle life, but I don't know much about it." Most of his experiences with anything non-magical came from Layla; doing muggle things with her had given Knox the opportunity to get a small glimpse of that life. "But I figure most people who come to Hogwarts are lucky."

Knox laughed a little. "Guess we'll have to stick to charming the giant squid different colors, then."

"Christmas'll be a learning experience for you, then," Flow said, brightly, hands back in her pockets. "Crash course in Muggle life. And poor-people life, 'cause I can't imagine you know a whole lot about that, either, you posh git." She elbowed him, to make sure he knew she wasn't serious, and flashed him a smile. "See how the other half lives, kind've thing. Jammy'll be dead pumped to meet you, he keeps saying he needs to talk to more magic weirdos. His words, not mine."

She veered right, heading down the stairs. "Merlin, at this rate the whole place'll be up before we're done. We should put some speed on."

"I could use the change of pace, I think." Knox replied with a smile, before pausing and frowning. "Wait, so you won't be serving me breakfast in bed?" After a second he laughed, picking up pace again and shaking his head. "I've always been interested in muggle life, just never had the chance to get much more than a secondhand perspective. I'll be interested to talk to him too. And we kind of are magic weirdos, at least by comparison I'm sure."

Following Flow down the stairs, Knox checked his watch. "Alright, then why not just get started here? I doubt the spell will spread too fast, so we might still be able to watch ourselves turn colors."

"Right, then." Flow grinned, pulling her wand out, and twirled it between her fingers. "If nothing else, I can watch you turn colours. On the count of three, then.... One, two..."

She pointed her wand directly at him, still grinning widely. This - once she was away from any intimation of, well, intimacy - this was fun. Just messing about with someone she could have a laugh with.

"Three!" she said, almost triumphantly, and started the spell.

As soon as Flow grinned and went for her wand, Knox's hand instantly reached for his own. If she was turning him, he was definitely going to turn her too. He watched in amusement, and the second Flow said three, he started the spell himself.

It was instantaneous and felt like a thousand raindrops of color hitting him at once. One hand started turning yellow while his other turned blue, and he watched as Flow turned into a bunch of different colors herself, grinning the whole time. This was going to be a great day.

"Well," He started laughing. "It works."
