Who: Knox and Flow
What: First date! It's rainbow time!
Where: Starts off at the Astronomy Tower
When: Around 5:00 AM Sunday Morning
Status: In Progress
Rating: PG/PG-13? SFW, I'd say.

He wasn't nervous. Really.

Fidgety, maybe, but not nervous. Knox had gone to bed last night, and while he'd fallen asleep just fine he found himself awake long before he had to be. That was when he started feeling a bit restless. After a while he'd given up on sleep, gotten dressed and headed over to the Astronomy Tower, where he was meeting Flow, early. It wasn't that he didn't think their plan would work, or that it was worth it, because he knew it would work and it was worth it; this was something he was definitely looking forward to. The thing was, Knox actually liked Flow, and he hadn't really cared all that much when it came to another person for a while. He didn't get swept up like this too often.

This was a prank, but it was also date. Their first date, and Knox wanted to do it right.

He was in his uniform, shirt sleeves rolled up about halfway up his forearms, sitting by a window. The scarf Flow had given him was loosely hanging around his neck. There was a cigarette hanging from his mouth, glowing orange at the end and occasionally dropping bits of ash; one hand was tracing shapes in the fog on the window, allowing him to get a better look outside. The bright, white snow was still covering the grounds despite the disturbance from the snowball fight. Knox smiled at the thought, imagining how it would look next to the castle's new colors. Then he imagined everyone's faces at what they were going to do, and some of the anxiousness disappeared.

This was going to be awesome.

Flow was early too, and, although wild horses couldn't have dragged it out of her, it was for much the same reasons. She'd woken up at three in the morning, and not been able to get back to sleep. She'd made an effort to look like she'd just crawled out of bed anyway, though; she was still wearing her worn old flannel pyjamas, her wand sticking out of the pocket, and her hair was a mess. Her bare feet padded on the stone floors, and she sneaked around to right behind him before she spoke.

"Hey, Mongoose," she said, with a grin, leaning back against the wall. "Wasn't expecting you to have dragged yourself out of bed this soon. Not ill, are you?" She flopped down next to him, reaching out a hand for his cigarette. "Gi's a drag of that?"

She was kind of surprised - pleasantly surprised - to see the scarf around his neck. Even if it was going to turn rainbow soon. She tried to keep any surprise off her face, though, running her hand back through her hair and looking out of the window. "Think the snow'll change colours too?"

Knox had gotten caught up in his thoughts and hadn't heard Flow approach him. When she finally greeted him, he turned around a bit more suddenly than he wouldn't liked to admit but smiled when he saw who it was. He gave her a quick once over, incredibly amused that she was still in her pyjamas.

"Morning, Lioness," He replied, relaxing a bit more into his spot. "I could say the same to you." Knox took a small drag from the cigarette before grabbing it and holding it out to Flow. He shrugged slightly, the hand that had held the cigarette now reaching down to tug at a loose thread on the cuff on his slacks. "You look nice, by the way." A chuckle emitted from the Slytherin, paired with his usual smirk.

At mention of the snow, Knox glanced back out the window. "Only if we want it to, I'd say. Depends on how far we want the charm to go."

Flow flipped him off, taking the cigarette with her free hand, and took a long drag. "Look nice, my arse. Didn't see the point in dressin' up at five in the fuckin' morning, is all. Even for a 'first date'." She made air-quotes around the words, taking another puff of smoke and passing the cigarette back to him. "To be honest, I've been considering the possibility of just wearing pyjamas all the time, way comfier than stupid fucking robes. Look better, too."

She looked back out at the snow again. "I think rainbow snow'd be cool. And another thing... you ever wonder what the giant squid'd look like rainbow-striped?"

Knox laughed, tilted his head a little as he looked at her. "No, there isn't much of a point. 'Sides, it isn't your outfit I made a 'date' with." Knox did his own set of air-quotes, one eyebrow raised slightly in amusement; he'd eventually gotten dressed because he'd needed something to do; just sitting around in the dorm had lost its charm very quickly, and by the time he realized it was still the weekend he couldn't be bothered to change. "That sounds like an ace idea." He nodded when she continued on about pyjamas, accepting the cigarette back and taking a final puff before putting it out.

"The only way to know is to find out." Knox grinned, pushing himself up to stand and extended his hand for Flow to grab. "Where do you want to start- the castle, the snow or the squid?"

After a second's hesitation and a slightly sidelong look, Flow took his hand, hauling herself to her feet. "Start with the castle, that's the important bit. We can spiral out from there if we got time, right?" She was still holding his hand, and didn't appear to notice, or at least care. To the close observer, there might be a certain tenseness to her jaw, or to the way her hand closed around her wand, but they were tiny signs, invisible to the casual onlooker.

"We splitting up, or doin' this together?" she asked, after a second.

He wasn't sure that Flow was actually going to take his hand, but when he did, Knox relaxed slightly, nodding. "Alright, castle it is to start then." Any other day he might have been taken the moment to notice any tension in Flow, but like the girl beside him all of Knox's attention seemed to be focused on the fact that they were, in fact, holding hands. The last time they'd held hands, and the only other time, was when Knox was still bedridden in the hospital wing. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth as he started walking.

"Well it's not much of a date if we're not together, is it?" Now the smile won, fully appearing. "'Sides, I want to see when you turn colors."

She cracked a smile at that, too, striding along, first behind him, then alongside. "Don't blame you. I wanna see that, too. We should find somewhere with a mirror to start off with." She thought for a moment. "There's a big one in that hallway on the second floor. Let's start there. And," she added, a little waspishly now, "it's not much of a date anyway."

But her hand didn't disengage for several moments, anyway.

"I guess we can be the first rainbows," He chuckled, glancing over at her. Her comment about their date took him mildly by surprise, though, and he raised an eyebrow. "Ye of little faith," He commented. "I'd say this is better than most dates, or would you rather I take you out to dinner?" Knox shrugged slightly. "Besides, it's barely started. Who knows what'll happen."

When she let go of his hand, he flexed it subconsciously, feeling the difference between having the weight there and not having it as they made their way to the second floor.

"Just dunno why we're calling it a date, that's all," she mumbled, shoving her now-free hand into her pocket. She knew she'd agreed to this and all, and it was going to be great, but at that moment, all she could think was that there were a million other places she'd rather be, starting with bed - and yet, that she wanted to be right here as well. It was confusing, and awkward, and a little nauseating... not to mention (and she refused to, even to herself) frightening. She wasn't used to needing to give a shit what people thought. Despite how she acted, she wasn't used to the urge to impress people. And, most of all, she wasn't used to holding hands.

She closed her eyes for a second, then sighed, pulling herself together as best she could. "C'mon, second floor. Let's pretty the place up."

Now that wasn't something he was expecting. Knox stopped walking and paused, frowning slightly. "Wait. Wh--" He started, then stopped. He raised a hand to run over the top of his head, unsure how to respond or if a response would cause trouble. He didn't want to sound like an idiot, but he knew this was odd and new and a bit scary, for both of them. "I figured it was because it is a date." His hand lowered, and he started picking at his fingernails. "This is new to me too, but's just rainbows, yeah?"

"Oh, fuck off." She pressed her lips together, striding on down the corridor. "Yeah. It's just rainbows. Don't talk to me like I'm some... some scared little kid, yeah? I'm tired. Get moody when I'm tired, that's all." Her teeth were grinding together. She stopped them, with an effort, not slowing down. In her pockets, her fists clenched slowly, then unclenched. "You comin', or what?"

"You fuck off," Knox replied, furrowing his brow. "And I'm not talking to you like you're a kid, I'm talking to you like you're a person. It might be news to you, but I can, in fact, be empathetic." He huffed slightly, but started walking again. "Yeah, I'm coming."

"Yeah, that's news." It didn't have a whole lot of bite to it, which made it sound pretty flat, but she cracked something like a smile anyway. "Thought empathy was something they trained out of you as soon as the Hat made its pick."

Knox snorted, shaking his head. "Nah, mostly the Hat makes it pick because you already lack empathy. Society does the trick, or tries, with all the stupid gatherings and what's 'proper' bullshit. 'Least that's how I see it."

"Glad I never had all that shit." The tension was still there, pulling the tendons of her neck up stark against the skin, but now it could be ignored. "I mean, they give it a go in school - Muggle school, anyway - but you can walk out've that."

"It's not all bad." Knox had no idea what was going to happen, but he figured going along with it was best and relaxed a bit. "I mean, the parties can be fun if you know who to mess with. Some people are really extreme about it with all that certain people have certain places in society, but it depends on the family. Not everyone believes in that. I've heard of people leaving their families behind because they didn't."

"Ugh." Flow pulled a face. "That's fucking shitty. Can imagine giving up a lot've things for principles, but giving up family - that's way beyond shitty." She turned her head, looking at him properly again. "You obviously don't, or you wouldn't be hanging around with a Mudblood off the estates. Gotta give you credit for that, I suppose. Dunno how you've managed to avoid being a pompous twat like that."

"People wonder where all the prejudice comes from, but it's society. Families that live by old fashioned ways of life, and it's a shitty cycle that doesn't mix well with current times." He laughed a little at her last comments. "My family is...I realized at an early age that a lot of what my parents, or their acquaintances, said was bullshit, so I stopped listening. I was lucky in that sense."

"Reckon I was pretty lucky, actually." She shrugged, the tension fading slightly now, and even gave him a smile, softer than usual. "I mean, there's bigots everywhere, and at home it's just like you said, too - people're just old-fashioned, like, they think you're only British if you're white and Christian and all that, and they still think women're for doing the cooking and shit like that. So I reckon I'm lucky I grew up in a family where we don't think like that."

She looked uncharacteristically reflective for a moment. "Reckon I'm lucky coming here as a Mudblood, too," she said, after a moment. "I mean, yeah, I'm a girl, but 'm white and English and tough, and I hang round with a bunch of liberals back home. You come here, you kind've realise the shit people go through when they ain't that lucky. Like Tombo and Carpie in September."

She was quiet for a second, looking at her feet as she walked, then her head snapped back up and she gave him a slightly brittle grin. "'Course, you can't dye Croyden rainbow, so I'd much rather be here."

"Everyone has their own fights," He commented, tilting his head in thought. "But it sounds like you might be a bit lucky," Knox mused with a small smile. "Especially these days, having the freedom to be who you want and all that."

He glanced over at her briefly. "I can only imagine- I mean, I've seen bits and pieces of muggle life, but I don't know much about it." Most of his experiences with anything non-magical came from Layla; doing muggle things with her had given Knox the opportunity to get a small glimpse of that life. "But I figure most people who come to Hogwarts are lucky."

Knox laughed a little. "Guess we'll have to stick to charming the giant squid different colors, then."

"Christmas'll be a learning experience for you, then," Flow said, brightly, hands back in her pockets. "Crash course in Muggle life. And poor-people life, 'cause I can't imagine you know a whole lot about that, either, you posh git." She elbowed him, to make sure he knew she wasn't serious, and flashed him a smile. "See how the other half lives, kind've thing. Jammy'll be dead pumped to meet you, he keeps saying he needs to talk to more magic weirdos. His words, not mine."

She veered right, heading down the stairs. "Merlin, at this rate the whole place'll be up before we're done. We should put some speed on."

"I could use the change of pace, I think." Knox replied with a smile, before pausing and frowning. "Wait, so you won't be serving me breakfast in bed?" After a second he laughed, picking up pace again and shaking his head. "I've always been interested in muggle life, just never had the chance to get much more than a secondhand perspective. I'll be interested to talk to him too. And we kind of are magic weirdos, at least by comparison I'm sure."

Following Flow down the stairs, Knox checked his watch. "Alright, then why not just get started here? I doubt the spell will spread too fast, so we might still be able to watch ourselves turn colors."

"Right, then." Flow grinned, pulling her wand out, and twirled it between her fingers. "If nothing else, I can watch you turn colours. On the count of three, then.... One, two..."

She pointed her wand directly at him, still grinning widely. This - once she was away from any intimation of, well, intimacy - this was fun. Just messing about with someone she could have a laugh with.

"Three!" she said, almost triumphantly, and started the spell.

As soon as Flow grinned and went for her wand, Knox's hand instantly reached for his own. If she was turning him, he was definitely going to turn her too. He watched in amusement, and the second Flow said three, he started the spell himself.

It was instantaneous and felt like a thousand raindrops of color hitting him at once. One hand started turning yellow while his other turned blue, and he watched as Flow turned into a bunch of different colors herself, grinning the whole time. This was going to be a great day.

"Well," He started laughing. "It works."
