Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
Lucas threw the bouncing ball into the corner again, harder this time, so that it sped back to him at an unexpected angle; this time he just barely caught it again, letting out a hoarse laugh at the near miss.
This ball had been seeing a lot of corners lately. And Luke didn't know what else to do to bide his time, except glance at Alana once in a while -- but that didn't do half as well to keep his mind off all the things he felt.
Uncle B, he kept thinking, trying to run over the memories in his mind; and there were a lot of them, but like so much else in his childhood it was hard to see clearly through the years after the Outbreak. He didn't know why. So much of what he'd had and done as a kid was fuzzy: things he knew had happened, like crystal photographs in his mind, but sometimes Luke couldn't be sure what was real and what was just embellishment. Uncle B felt real enough in his mind's eye that it had been kind of disturbing to hear from him again, and disturbing to pretend he hadn't for Alana afterward. Lucas knew what it was gong to mean to her, after... Everything.
And it meant the same to him.
But. Still, disturbing was a good word for it. He hadn't known how to bring it up.
Thunk. Thunk.
I hate waiting, Lucas thought, tossing the ball viciously against the wall. Uncle B had said he'd get in. What if he couldn't? What if it somehow wasn't really him?
Thunk.
It felt weird to be excited about something. It felt almost wrong, after what had happened to Michael. What felt wronger was the little voice in his head that was worried, for inexplicable reasons; worried enough that Luke found himself glancing anxiously at the door after a while, humming something softly under his breath. No big deal. It's just Uncle B. B because I couldn't say Brannon. No big deal. This wasn't a mistake. Right?
