WHO: April & Rae
WHEN: February 24th, 2020 :: Afternoon
WHAT: April wakes up finally
WHERE: The infirmary
RATING: Medium, maybe?
The garden she was in was peaceful; the flowers were all blooming and the sun shining bright and warm. April lay out in the middle of the yard, book in hand and just read, for hours, days, she didn’t know. But something was wrong, the story never changed. She read the words over and over, but they never changed – it was the same short phrase repeated on every page. “To live will be an awfully big adventure.” What did it mean? She kept wondering what it meant. It was from Peter Pan, a well-loved book of hers. But why that phrase and not the whole book? She was alive after all, she had to be. The voices were still there, floating in the back of her mind – though they all kept thinking about waking up and worrying things. Were they worried about her? April pushed off the ground then and made her way towards the house, she had tried this once before and hadn’t made it there. But she was determined now to go inside, to find Rae or Lucas and prove she was alive. Twenty steps and she was back at the beginning, her body laying down on the ground and the book held open. Why couldn’t she reach the house? I want to go home. She was pleading now, but with who she didn’t know. The book closed with a thud and with a determination she hadn’t felt before she clamored up off the ground and ran for the house, the phrase playing over and over in her head. To live will be an awfully big adventure. She wanted to live, had to live! For the first time her hand closed over the handle of the backdoor and she shoved it open, stepping inside and calling out for her family. “Lucas, Rae?” It came out like a croak, her throat raw and her voice quiet from disuse. Her eyelids felt heavy and her whole body ached, but April still forced them open and tried not to squint against the brightness of the room. The infirmary. She was in the infirmary, which meant she was alive. Everyone could stop worrying about her, stop pleading with her to wake up. Frantically she began to let her gaze travel around the room, searching for someone, anyone to prove that this was real. Her gaze settled on a sleeping Lucas first, and she smiled softly. You better wake up. She thought, before her gaze slide over to the other person in the room. Rae was awake, but she looked tired – like maybe she hadn’t slept in days. “I’m awake,” she managed with a faint smile. “How long have I been here?” The question was asked as she tried to push up onto her elbows, but found herself whimpering in pain as it pulled at what had to be the stitches in her stomach. |
