It was weird that she couldn’t come up with the right word for how she had felt, April was going to blame the pain killers for making her head fuzzy like that. “Both, maybe,” she answered honestly. “And that’s what matters, right?” Because she knew that losing another person was a fear of her cousin’s, which just made her want to kick herself for almost doing exactly that.
April laughed out loud and then regretted it when it pulled at the stitches in her stomach. “He totally is,” she agreed with a small but genuine smile. Maybe it was strange, but she never focused on her own intelligence, it just wasn’t a thing. So she found it strange when it seemed to matter to other people. Her own thoughts were derailed though when she caught Rae’s thought. “What’s a lie?” But then she was pushing onto the rest of the conversation, and she nodded in understanding at her cousin’s words. “You do have other things going for you, but not the stupid things Great Aunt Deirdre used to say,” she paused. “Or at least that’s not the only thing.”
“Good, because if she does Lucas might kill her,” That was if he knew what the crazy woman had tried to do. Oh, that wasn’t good. April’s expression went serious when Rae mentioned that Silas had been injured. “I’m sorry,” she couldn’t even imagine what it was doing to her cousin to have two people laid up like this. “So Lucas got Evan here in time?” That was good to know.
April grinned slightly. “Not arguing, especially with your scary use of that nickname,” she was teasing, but it felt good to tease right now. “I- I don’t know what I would have done if Brandon hadn’t,” she probably would have died, but she didn’t say that aloud.
“So not far, I don’t want a stuffed one, I want a real live Dumbo,” she insisted, though it was only half hearted. “But I guess a stuffed one would do.”
Giving her cousin another faint smile, April wanted to argue that she didn’t want her leave, but she knew it was unfair of her to want all of Rae’s attention, especially with Silas just down the way from her. “What would I do without you?” She asked softly, taking the key ring from her cousin. “I mean you give me hair ties to torment Lucas with, that makes you kind of awesome.” She was joking, but it was definitely a good idea. If Rae was going to leave then she wanted Lucas awake.
