Couldn't reach the door? Rae's expression twisted in confusion, but she didn't let that last for long. "Door?" she asked instead, knowing that April would explain to her.
Snorting a laugh through the tears, she shrugged a little when April explained that she sounded like Lucas. "Well, we are kind of related," she pointed out. "Sometimes I even find myself sounding like you." Though those times were further between, since April was the smarter one in the family, and Rae wasn't as book smart as she was. "That and it was. Too long, I mean," she explained. The longer they waited, the worse it seemed.
"Don't sit up," Rae shook her head no. "Maybe the medics will help you."
That should have been the first thing Rae did, got the medics, but like with Silas, she was just so glad to see her cousin's eyes open that logic and "what should be done" flew out the window. Rae breathed a deep breath and let it out in a slow, steady channel of air. "What were you imagining?" she asked. She'd never been comatose like that. Never had dreams too strange. Hers were vivid, lifelike, realistic. Sometimes she wondered what kind were scarier.
The mention of the medics made Rae look down and nod her head. "They were doubtful," she agreed. And the stupid old lady medic kept insisting that they pull the plug to save on resources, and Rae had wanted to knock her false teeth out of her mouth.
"No, no, it's..." she'd been about to tell April that it was okay, but it didn't really feel okay. "It's not your fault, sweetie, okay? Don't apologize. You wouldn't let me if roles were reversed, would you?" she added. "We're family. I wouldn't be doing my job very well if I hadn't worried, right?"
She gave April a smile, weak but present. "Let me help you sit up," she said, giving in to what her instinct told her, because April wanted something. And what April wanted, April got.
