Rory could distinctly recall a sense of dread when she and Rae last properly got together. It wasn't Rae's fault, of course. This woman was her friend, more than that, really. They understood each other, they were there for each other, and if Rory was the sort of person to admit to something like this, she might say the woman was like family. But the last time, Rory had still been drowning. Seeing someone who understood her, who would be there for her, had made her cringe. Because she knew Rae wasn't going to let her get away with her anger and her sadness for too long. Granted, she'd thought Brandon would give her a free pass, and he'd called her right out and jump-started the healing process with a bit of tough love, but at least when she met him, she thought she was safe from that.
It was with a distinct feeling of happiness that Rory approached Rae's room this time, and it was impossible for her not to acknowledge the clear differences from last time.
People really had no need to forgive her. Not after the way she acted. Yes, Rory had an excuse, but she stretched it as thin as possible, then started laying destruction to that, too. She was grateful, in a word. Incredibly grateful that she had the people she did. And now her brother was in the picture, too. Her brother, who tried to joke around with her even though he was potentially dying at that point. Even though she was crying moments later. It was so much, but not too much. Rory felt strong again, and she knew everything was going to work out.
Though she knocked, Rory made no real show of patience when she called "I missed you while you were gone, Miss Alghren, don't leave me waiting here for long."
