Halloween AU: Haunted Masquerade!
WHO: Teenager!Kessie and OPEN
WHAT: A costume party at a haunted house goes TERRIBLY AWRY.
WHEN: Halloween 1994.
WHERE: New York (the state, not the city)
WARNINGS: Unknown, but it's an AU.
Most parents would be concerned when their fifteen year old daughter scoured thrift stores for vintage wedding dresses and talked for weeks about the sobbing jilted wife who murdered her children for a lover that never loved her. Hunter and Onua were not normal parents. By now, they were used to Kessie's strange fascinations, the way she would fixate on a seemingly meaningless urban legend or wives' tale or strange piece of news and study it until it seemed impossible to know any more about it.
"Frankly," Onua had admitted to her husband, after draping a blanket over Kessie where she'd fallen asleep at her desk, "I'm just glad she got invited to something this year."
Kessie had always been the odd one out. But this year, she'd befriended another rather strange girl, who had invited everyone in the sophomore class to a party at a "haunted house" her family owned. "Old family property," the girl had said. "Chock full of history...and GHOSTS."
Kessie had never been one to discount anything. The party was supposed to be massive, though, and lacking in adult supervision--supposedly. It would be a chance to explore a place that she'd never been, and have some fun in the process.
Dressed in a dirtied vintage wedding dress, wearing makeup to white out her skin and fake blood dripping down her cheeks, Kessie arrived at the party about half an hour after it started. Hunter had driven her, leaving Onua to pass out candy.
"I'll be back to pick you up at midnight, okay?"
"Okay, dad." Kessie waved, hopping out of the truck. The house was certainly creepy looking, a Victorian-style masterpiece with three floors and aging foundations. Paint was peeling and some of the windows were boarded over, but there were lights inside and music. Taking a deep breath, Kesiah gripped the hem of her dress and headed into the fray.
Who knew what the night would bring? It was Halloween, after all.
