MARCH BONDING: OBSTACLE COURSE

OBSTACLE COURSE

If anyone came out early to watch, the would have spotted Mr. Thorn lugging out four large trunks, each color coded to match the four houses of Gooseberry. They may seem unusually small, but with some impressive magic, they create an unbelievably complex obstacle course right before the eyes of the student sneaking a peek at what their afternoon holds.

There are four sections, modeled after Coppertale, Ribbonfin, Ebonhide and Azurcrest.

Coppertale: The area named for Coppertale is a straight run across ground obstacles, testing your initial agility and strength. There are tires to run through, jumps to make, and logs to climb. It’s in an area that’s flat and open, like the fields surrounding Coppertale.

Ribbonfin: Then, the course leads the students to the stream, where there are two crossings they must make. Once across woven ropes, and the other jumping from one floating wooden platform to the next. Be careful, or you’ll fall in the water!

Ebonhide: The obstacles begin to rise into the trees, where students must cross bridges and climb ladders to progress. The heavily forested area continues to provide an exciting challenge for athletic students.

Azurcrest: Now the heights are truly dizzying as the obstacle course reaches high into the treetops! There’s a charm in place that catches any students who lose their footing, letting them fall quickly for ten feet, before lowering them softly to the ground. It does sometimes get quirky, and drop students roughly for the last foot or two.

Zipline: When it’s time to finally get your feet back on solid ground, there’s an exhilarating zipline that will take you back.

OBSTACLE COURSE RULES
  1. There are three paths presented to students:

    • Challenging: This is for students who really want to test their abilities. Your character may wipe out. There’s a very slight chance of injury. This path is the most difficult, but each successful run will count as THREE points for your the character’s house. They will be in the running for the best time.
    • Normal: Slightly challenging, suitable for the a very fit teen. The hardest obstacles will be skipped, and there’s a lower chance of wiping out, and no chance of injury. Each successful run will count as TWO points for your the character’s house. They will be in the running for the best time.
    • Easy: This is basically just a fun walk through the course. The most challenging aspects will be on the level of a standard jungle gym, and you still get to go on the zipline! There’s no chance of failure or injury. Each successful run will count as ONE point for your the character’s house.

  2. When you post to participate in the obstacle course, you will receive your character’s time, and whether or not they completed the course.

  3. This means there are two competitions: best time and most athletic house.

  4. Your character is encouraged to at least take the easy path!

  5. Cecil’s Rule: You may skip the portions of the course with heights.

  6. Rafael’s Rule: If participating in the course would possibly be dangerous for you, Thorn may make you sit out. Anyone who is injured or ill will be asked to not participate, or only participate in the easiest route.

  7. Sy’s Rule: You may not push, shove, punch, trip, or otherwise harm the other students on the course.

  8. There are no prizes because the staff wants you terrible children to stop competing, you’re all winners!

  9. There’s a snack table that’s got lots of healthy options, like veggies and sandwiches, fresh water and sports drinks. Each house has their own little base camp where their Head of House is waiting.

  10. How is the winner calculated? When a participating character posts to their house's base, a mod will RNG a time for each character, and whether or not they complete the course. A house’s score is the total score of all their participating members, and the highest house score wins. There will also be a best time competition for Challenging and Normal runs. You have until Monday, March 13 at 11:59 PM MT to post to your house's base and have your character be counted.

Please fill out this form and post it to your house's comment to participate:

Name:
House:
Difficulty Level: Challenging, normal or easy?
How athletic are they?:
Number rating: On a scale of 1-10, rate their performance.
Anything else?: Do you want them to fall in the water? Do they make it to the high trees, freeze up, and need to be helped down by a teacher?

» Ebonhide: They could be studying right now.

» Ribbonfin: Really, what matters most is that everyone had a good time.

» Azurcrest: Winning is FUN!!!

» Coppertale: Will the most competitive house take home the pointless non-prize?

» Sidelines: Here there are snacks and plenty of space to socialize!

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

"If by bond you mean 'run an obstacle course,' which in this situation you are required to, than no. I don't," Isaiah deadpans.

Chris laughs because he finds Isaiah endearing which is weird so he laughs. "Is it because you don't like sweating? Because," eyebrow wiggle, "I'm sure," more eyebrow wiggling, "there's specific people here," excessive eyebrow wiggling, "that won't mind watching you sweat."

Isaiah is silent for a moment, staring at Chris. This is definitely weird. So weird that he needs to ask about it. "Chris, are you hitting on me?" he asks, finally, sounding a little bit like he's choking as he says it, because holy shit, who asks that, even he knows that you don't ask that. "Because if you're not. What are you doing?"

Chris actually laughs again because that question had to take a lot of effort to ask. "No, I'm telling you to go show off for your not random dude you made out with at a party, dumbass," he says. There's no malice in his tone. He sounds amused. If he were to hit on Isaiah - he'd probably do it exactly like this. "Were my eyebrows not clear enough, damn."

Isaiah scowls. Sort of. It might be directed at Chris, or it might be directed at the idea of making out with 'not random dudes' at parties, which is kind of a sore spot right now. There's no telling. "You say that like I'd get past the Coppertale bit. Which I would not, which would be both humiliating and symbolic, so no, thank you. I appreciate the thought, but no." And then he pauses, reality dawning, and stares hard. "Wait. Is that...common knowledge, exactly?"

Chris shrugs. "Probably," he says nonchalantly. "Everything's common knowledge to me. I see everything." Mostly because they've actually already talked about this. Then he pauses. "Oh wait do you mean the making out at parties part? Because yeah probably not." There's another pause. "I didn't actually see that. I'm not stalking you at parties. That'd be weird. Besides. The coppertale bit is on the ground. Take off your shirt. Nobody will care how far you get if you take off your shirt."

"I mean the making out at parties part, and if you're not stalking me, why?" Isaiah says, resigned. They both already know that he's not taking off his shirt, so he doesn't bother.

"Because I'm here to pressure you into not holding up the wall anymore, remember? I'm like your aggressive social fairy godmother," Chris answers even though he's not sure what the question's for. Why does he know about the parties or why is he pestering Isaiah now? His answer feels shameless enough to be universal for both.

"You gotta challenge yourself dude. See how far you can get. And if you fall, you're not the only one falling. And I'll run it with you. If you fall, I'll make sure I find a way to fall more humiliatingly than you."

That is a...strangely touching offer. Isaiah feels like he shouldn't turn it down. Turning it down would be as rude as accepting it would be humiliating, and he's enough of a gentleman that 'rude' trumps 'humiliated.' Just.

"Are you serious?" He asks after a pause.

Chris doesn't even seem aware that it's a touching offer. But then again - humiliation is different for him. Fucking himself up in public is fine. Losing his captainacy for laughing at a sophomore? That was humiliating. But he could humiliate himself to ensure Isaiah didn't.

"Dude. I broke my arm and fell off a broom yesterday. This is nothing. I've already gone through it twice. I got you," he tells Isaiah confidently.

Isaiah is quiet for a minute, pondering this. He is going- because he has to, now, it's no longer an option, he's been backed into a metaphorical corner that consists of a dislike of confrontation, Chris ' s casual kindness, and a desire to keep this weird friendship going- to go through an obstacle course with Chris Park. In front of everyone. For fun?

"Do I have to take my shirt off?" He asks finally.

Chris grins at Isaiah. "Of course not dude," he says. Then he pauses again. "Wait if I said yes would you actually take your shirt off even though you don't want to? Because we should have a talk about standing up for yourself if that's the case, Isaiah. That shits not healthy."

"No," Isaiah says, defensive. "I wouldn't. No talks." It's not his fault he's bad at this stuff and he's been hiding in the music room for four years for a reason.

Chris arched a challenging eyebrow. "Okay yes you have to take off your shirt," he says, mostly because now he wants to see how Isaiah will tell him to fuck off. And because he doesn't know how to quit while he's ahead.

Isaiah would turn red if that sort of thing was a possibility. Instead he shakes his head and glares at Chris. "Forget it. I only came to watch."

Chris notes that that actually wasn't a refusal. "No don't be like that," he says, grabbing Isaiah's arm. "I'm just giving you shit. And if you make it past the first section I promise I won't give you the talk about standing up for yourself that I'm already writing in my head, okay? Just try to have fun and ignore everybody else. I'll make sure you don't fall." Which was a step up from making sure he doesn't humiliate himself and not an actual promise Chris was sure he could keep but this run wasn't gonna be a race. He could probably catch Isaiah if he tripped, maybe.

"But if you just wanna watch, I can probably just start that very serious talk now...."

"I..." Isaiah hesitates, then nods. He's still reluctant, and not even sure why he's agreeing, but he's agreeing. Then nod becomes a little firmer and he squares his shoulders. "All right. Let's go."
