MARCH BONDING: OBSTACLE COURSE

OBSTACLE COURSE

If anyone came out early to watch, the would have spotted Mr. Thorn lugging out four large trunks, each color coded to match the four houses of Gooseberry. They may seem unusually small, but with some impressive magic, they create an unbelievably complex obstacle course right before the eyes of the student sneaking a peek at what their afternoon holds.

There are four sections, modeled after Coppertale, Ribbonfin, Ebonhide and Azurcrest.

Coppertale: The area named for Coppertale is a straight run across ground obstacles, testing your initial agility and strength. There are tires to run through, jumps to make, and logs to climb. It’s in an area that’s flat and open, like the fields surrounding Coppertale.

Ribbonfin: Then, the course leads the students to the stream, where there are two crossings they must make. Once across woven ropes, and the other jumping from one floating wooden platform to the next. Be careful, or you’ll fall in the water!

Ebonhide: The obstacles begin to rise into the trees, where students must cross bridges and climb ladders to progress. The heavily forested area continues to provide an exciting challenge for athletic students.

Azurcrest: Now the heights are truly dizzying as the obstacle course reaches high into the treetops! There’s a charm in place that catches any students who lose their footing, letting them fall quickly for ten feet, before lowering them softly to the ground. It does sometimes get quirky, and drop students roughly for the last foot or two.

Zipline: When it’s time to finally get your feet back on solid ground, there’s an exhilarating zipline that will take you back.

OBSTACLE COURSE RULES
  1. There are three paths presented to students:

    • Challenging: This is for students who really want to test their abilities. Your character may wipe out. There’s a very slight chance of injury. This path is the most difficult, but each successful run will count as THREE points for your the character’s house. They will be in the running for the best time.
    • Normal: Slightly challenging, suitable for the a very fit teen. The hardest obstacles will be skipped, and there’s a lower chance of wiping out, and no chance of injury. Each successful run will count as TWO points for your the character’s house. They will be in the running for the best time.
    • Easy: This is basically just a fun walk through the course. The most challenging aspects will be on the level of a standard jungle gym, and you still get to go on the zipline! There’s no chance of failure or injury. Each successful run will count as ONE point for your the character’s house.

  2. When you post to participate in the obstacle course, you will receive your character’s time, and whether or not they completed the course.

  3. This means there are two competitions: best time and most athletic house.

  4. Your character is encouraged to at least take the easy path!

  5. Cecil’s Rule: You may skip the portions of the course with heights.

  6. Rafael’s Rule: If participating in the course would possibly be dangerous for you, Thorn may make you sit out. Anyone who is injured or ill will be asked to not participate, or only participate in the easiest route.

  7. Sy’s Rule: You may not push, shove, punch, trip, or otherwise harm the other students on the course.

  8. There are no prizes because the staff wants you terrible children to stop competing, you’re all winners!

  9. There’s a snack table that’s got lots of healthy options, like veggies and sandwiches, fresh water and sports drinks. Each house has their own little base camp where their Head of House is waiting.

  10. How is the winner calculated? When a participating character posts to their house's base, a mod will RNG a time for each character, and whether or not they complete the course. A house’s score is the total score of all their participating members, and the highest house score wins. There will also be a best time competition for Challenging and Normal runs. You have until Monday, March 13 at 11:59 PM MT to post to your house's base and have your character be counted.

Please fill out this form and post it to your house's comment to participate:

Name:
House:
Difficulty Level: Challenging, normal or easy?
How athletic are they?:
Number rating: On a scale of 1-10, rate their performance.
Anything else?: Do you want them to fall in the water? Do they make it to the high trees, freeze up, and need to be helped down by a teacher?

» Ebonhide: They could be studying right now.

» Ribbonfin: Really, what matters most is that everyone had a good time.

» Azurcrest: Winning is FUN!!!

» Coppertale: Will the most competitive house take home the pointless non-prize?

» Sidelines: Here there are snacks and plenty of space to socialize!

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Rafael having a sulk.
[info]firstposition
2017-03-10 03:01 pm UTC (link)
Rafael was informed that he'll only be allowed to take the easy course, which didn't surprise him, but it was still unwelcome news. Because he's a seventeen year old, he's decided to not participate at all rather than accept his physical limitations gracefully.

Although his mood is not fantastic, he's directing his frustration into aggressively supporting his friends. Leo, Ty, Quinn, Casper, Cecil, Saira, Ravi, Tess, all his dance babies... Rafael is very invested in your success. He's sitting at the end of the zip line to greet you. When someone he likes arrives, he stops sulking and lights up to enthusiastically compare their times to others!

Leo races pretty fast to get back to hang out with him and for two seconds debated sitting out too in solidarity, but figured that would be worse :(
I guess depending on rng this might also be his doom but he will be ok with that.

Rafael absolutely wants Leo to run the course, and... hopefully he wasn't actually too big of a distraction. He whistles as Leo comes to a landing after the zip line, though!

Leo was maybe a little distracted, and when he comes back, he knows that other people have done better. But he doesn't really care. He emerges kind of looking like a small child who just got off a playground. "I kept you waiting too long." He still says, though he can't sound like he minds much.

Rafael & Dimi

After clumsily removing himself from the zip line, Dimi shakes his head, laughing from exhilaration. He spots Rafael nearby and before realizing his roommate's mood, blurts, "Rafael, I didn't see you up there!" After a pause, he seems to notice that Rafael is not in the best spirits, "You all right, mate?"

Rafael grimaces. It's been a while since he's had to have this conversation, but... Dimi will find out eventually.

He likes Dimi. He's been a surprisingly mellow addition to a decidedly unstable cabin. Maybe everyone had hoped that the new roommate would be able to bring peace, but Rafael wouldn't ask anyone to attempt that thankless task. It's hard not to think about Wes when he sees him, though, especially when discussing his knee.

"Old injury," he explains reluctantly. "They think I will go too far and hurt myself more. No restraint, they say. Can you believe it?" At least Rafael still has it in him to joke a little bit.

"I cannot imagine where they would've gotten an idea like that." Dimi replies with an easy chuckle, though the smile quickly slides into a more neutral - more concerned - expression. He's curious about Rafael, but with their cabin in its current state, it's been hard for Dimi to catch him for a chat.

It doesn't take a legilimens to sense that Rafael is stressed and hurting. Dimi wonders if poking this particular wound will unlock some secret about his cabin's mysterious prefect or just make things worse? He doesn't wonder for long. It's not his strong suit.

He clears his throat. "Was it very serious, then? The injury."

Xavier (Open)

Zav is a little bit dusty from being deposited on the ground after deciding he'd rather fly than finish the course. There's a smudge of dirt across the bridge of his nose and over his right eye that he's not presently aware of. He's got a sandwich in one hand and a water in the other and he is cheerfully congratulating pretty much anyone that passes him by.

There's that angry Coppertale guy, staring way too hard at Xavier again. Reid didn't want to, but he's entranced by the smudges of dirt on Xavier's face. It's bothering him. Someone needs to wipe it off. Reid kind of wishes he could wipe it off.

Xavier feels someone watching. He turns and, without expecting it, his gaze grazes Reid's in that terrible, awkward, stomach flipping way when you catch someone staring at you. Xavier looks anywhere else. Oh god. What is this guy's deal??

Is he still staring? Oh jeez, he is. Why? Is there something on Zav's face?

Xavier grazes his nose with three fingers, smearing the dirt on his face. His cheeks are burning. What to do? What to do?

In a moment of bravery, Xavier catches Reid's eye and glares right back at him. His most convincing scowl (it is the least convincing scowl ever). Then he takes an angry bite of his sandwich for emphasis and wanders away very quickly, heart thumping in his chest.

... that he improvised on the course and shares when they're both at the refreshments table. It's about rope courses. It's not good.

i'm too tired to make it up right now but i might come back and do it; just let it be known that it happened.

After all these years, ignoring Casey's singing is somehow not a skill which Sy has learned. He tries. Oh, he tries. But Casey only needs to perform four bars of his abysmal improvised ditty before Sy is visibly twitching and puts down his sandwich.

"Patterson." Vector is here. He can't punch Casey. "For fucksakes, use that mouth to eat something."

Ari's not doing this
[info]deimons
2017-03-10 06:35 pm UTC (link)
Even though she's on cheer squad, Ari is not particularly athletic by nature. She's going to sit this one out unless someone actively convinces her to try it, which will not be an easy task. She sits around the Ebonhide basecamp eating celery sticks and looking unfriendly, but occasionally claps when an impressive score by one of her housemates is being celebrated.

Addy's Corner for People who Failed but Tried Hard Anyway :(
[info]adorbs
2017-03-10 07:14 pm UTC (link)
Addy did not finish this obstacle course. She does not really care, and does not try again. She'll stand at the snack table for the rest of the time instead, and EXCESSIVELY CONGRATULATE anyone who tried this. This is especially true if they, like she, did not make it. If they look sad because of that, she is even more encouraging. And may go full Soccer Mom (Bonding Mom?) and offer pieces of fruit from the table.

Addy and Cecil in the Fail Corner
[info]choneychurch
2017-03-10 08:46 pm UTC (link)
Cecil failed. He failed so hard. While he's bouncing back and he's able to put on a smile by the time he joins Addy near the snack table, he's still quietly embarrassed about his poor performance and his persistent fear of heights. Part of him had considered going back and trying again. Because failing isn't the end of the world and he could only do better on a second attempt. But. He's just not sure he wants to. It's not like he'll be able to do the whole course anyway.

He smiles sheepishly at his friend as he gets a bottle of water. "That obstacle course is...something. Isn't it?"

Addy beams at Cecil, who looks a little embarrassed for she imagines no good reason. It isn't as though the obstacle course measures how awesome people are. "Oh, it's something. I fell." She announces, eyes gesturing up to the high point she couldn't quite ascend. "How'd you do?"

Diego & Ravi
[info]morale
2017-03-10 08:07 pm UTC (link)
Diego's first run went so painlessly, he was excited to go again. It's going well at first. He's feeling confident, moving quickly across the floating platforms, until he hits one wrong. He feels it slip under his feet, and he knows what's about to happen immediately.

A few moments later, and Diego is emerging from the stream, soaked head to toe. This is a chilly end to his brief career as a competent obstacle course runner, and he's feeling about as pathetic as he probably looks. Through his water-speckled glasses, he can see people on the shoreline watching him. He's ready to groan and brace himself for teasing until he sees... Ravi. Standing there, looking at him with an expression Diego was coming to recognize as quintessentially Ravi. He doesn't know why that surprises him, but it's enough to make him smile.

"Thought I'd, you know, take a dip."

What is a "quintessentially Ravi" look? Certainly concern, over this being a mountain-fed stream in March. Most likely dismay, in sympathy with Diego's embarrassed cringe as he looks around. And hopefully not whatever expression you might wear when observing the way your boyfriend's wet clothing clings to his body. Oh, God.

Diego's direct glance and smile reminds Ravi of where they are. He rushes to grab a towel from the Ribbonfin base camp, and they meet each other halfway between refreshments and the shore. "Impatient, are we?" Ravi tuts as he wraps the towel around Diego. "I rather suspect that swimming would be more enjoyable on a beach in California."

After finishing her own run, Sylla is very pleased and proud of her own result, but it is certainly not the Borgin way to brag too much. Still, she feels herself walking a little taller and with more self-confidence as she makes her way to the snacks, to get a drink and to fix her rumpled hair. Her cheeks are flushed and her smile is beaming, a far cry from her usual composed, cold expression. Sitting by herself in the grass, she daintily eats her sandwich and watches the other students finishing their runs - or not finishing, which is still just as entertaining to her, secretly.
