MEME: Veritaserum

VERITASERUM:
Oh no! Your character has been dosed with Veritaserum, and they're compelled to be completely honest in response to anything said to them.

Post a comment with your character's name in the header, and then other characters can come ask them questions, or maybe just engage in some awkwardly truthful chats.

Have fun!

Got a lot of secrets, huh?

No! At least, I don't think I'm secretive...

I just mean, no one really likes to say exactly what they're thinking all the time, do they?

I guess not? I usually end up saying whatever comes to mind without magical help, but I think maybe it's better when you don't. Kind of sad, isn't it?

Is it? Some people might say not speaking your mind is sadder than always saying what you think.

It's good you can be so expressive. Um, with your music, I mean.

It really gets you in trouble sometimes, though. By "you" I mean "me". Do you not speak your mind much?

Oh, sure, yeah. Music's great for really tapping into things you feel but can't put words to. Even the lyrics are just symbols, right? Do you get what I mean?

I try to live my life honestly. But... it's as you said, sometimes honesty can hurt people. I'd rather be kind.

Yes! I think so. It's like how in historical fantasy, you're not really going for accuracy, but rather you're using familiar symbols as touchstones for exploring concepts that aren't easily translated in literal terms. Or maybe that trying to put it literally would lose some of the emotion you want to convey.

Good policy. It's like the school grew you in the Hermeticism lab to be the perfect prefect.

Yeah, yeah, you've got it. Abstracting it a little makes people think, because it makes what you're saying more accessible to everyone. Like, even if the song's about what I'm going through, when you hear it, it becomes something different. Now the song's about you.

Are you suggesting that no one can naturally be this way?

That's a fascinating way of putting it. You're right. It must be difficult to write things in way that they're specific enough to convey what you're feeling, but generalized enough to let people fit themselves in the song.

Nah, I believe in good people. Are you faking it, though?

I don't think about it too much when I'm doing it. I know when it's right, though. And when it's wrong.

No... This is really me. It's just not always me, but I try to ignore those times. Sorry. I don't know what I'm saying.

I guess that's why you're an artist and I'm not. I'm better at following instructions.

What do you try to ignore?

Oh god, instructions. I fuck those up all the time. I get so impatient. No matter how many times I tell myself to slow down and pay attention, I end up skipping ahead or forgetting something.

When I get the urge to do something I know would be reckless. Or hurtful. I'm not as immune to temptation as I act, but I try very hard to resist it.

Maybe you just need a system. Like... you go over the instructions first, break them down in even smaller steps and rewrite them in a way where you're not going to accidentally miss something on the line. Then check items off as you go down. I have to do this sometimes with the more complex potions we do.

You seem to be doing a good job. For instance: name one reckless thing you've done since coming to Gooseberry. Bet you it's totally no big deal and I've done worse things in the last month.

I'll try to remember to try that. Usually I just kind of... get the gist of what we're doing and figure it out along the way. Which works pretty good in Charms, but in potions I think Elmasry is ready to kill me.

I joined Duelling/Fencing in freshman year. That was a bit reckless, seeing how I'd never duelled or picked up a sword before.

Mr. Elmasry is one of yours, surely he understands that unfettered Azurcrest spirit. You can't be restrained by written instructions or lab safety procedures.

Oh, scandal! Come on, that's nothing. You joined an extracurricular you're going to put on your resume and use as evidence of your ability to tackle problems head on and deal with high stress situations.

Yeah, but he thinks it's less cute when you're almost an adult and still accidentally set things on fire.

I could've been seriously hurt! I mean, yes, it's not very likely with the teachers overseeing things, but I'd never done anything like that before and our classmates don't really pull their punches. And then it led to LARP, and I don't think you can really put that on your resume.

All he asks is that you slow down and think about what you're doing. What's the rush?

You're more likely to get hurt on a hike than in duelling. Hexes are an easy fix, and Mufferaw can't brush them off like the bruises and scrapes from Outdoor Exploration. Anyway, you can totally put LARP on there. Uh, you would say... You have the ability to organize large groups in a cooperative fashion, while balancing a detailed set of expectations and statistics. BAM.

I hate waiting. People to see, things to do.

That's... very good, but feels a bit like being evasive. If I add more bullet points, it'll start looking like: "Detailed knowledge of the culture, history and fighting talents of several different races of elves. But not real elves. Strictly fictional elves."

Sometimes waiting is worth it. Like... you're listening to a song, and it needs time to build up to that big crescendo. It wouldn't have as much of an impact if it gave you everything right away.

What's the difference between fictional elves and real elves anyway?

Ohh, clever, trying to catch me in a metaphor. You got me, Dhaliwal. Potions are a lot harder than playing, though. I'm less like an accomplished musical genius and more like a ten year old on a recorder in that class.

Well, they both have pointed ears. That's really the only thing they have in common. I remember being excited when I was told elves were real, and it turned out house-elves were nothing like I'd read about.

Why do you still take it? Lots of people only focus on the classes they like in senior year. I think maybe you want to try getting better at Potions.

Haha! You mean like the elves in those movies that are all like these super hot immortal whatevers? Yeah, Prospero's a good guy, but I'd be disappointed too. No one's having preteen fantasies about him.

You're going to have me all figured out within a couple hours.

Yes, exactly, like in Lord of the Rings. The elves in our game are a lot more varied and flexible, though. It's kind of anything goes, so long as it fits with what's been established. If you want to play an elf who's a lot less "super hot" and serious, there's a race for that.

You don't seem that easy. But it is your last chance to take classes and learn academic things before your band becomes famous and starts touring all over the country. You should enjoy this year.
