Who: Rielle and Aaron
What: black eye appreciation week
When: Monday morning at school
Where: JFKHS, theater closet
Rated: TBD
Status: incomplete

The year was almost to a close. This meant several things around JFKHS. First, it meant students were gearing up for their mid terms. Almost everyone was seen cramming for their big tests during free periods. The library was full, the quad was packed with students in scarfs and prep books, and kids were flipping through flash cards like their life depended on it. Second, vacation was coming. And third, auditions for the spring play were in motion. The play hadn't been decided yet, but the theater department was doing screenings while it deliberated it's selection. It was looking like they were going to adapt Tale of Two Cities, but they didn't want to make an announcement until they were positive.

But, the theater department was in full swing. Unlocked, stocked, and mostly unsupervised, it's insides were at the disposal of anyone who dared enter. And so, there Rielle was, digging through it's make up stores. Her black eye was, well, it wasn't looking good. Having only been mugged the day before, it was pretty badly bruised, and still swollen. Her nose had finally stopped bleeding, and thankfully hadn't been broken. But she was still looking worse for the wear. Unfortunately, the girl had been blessed with (or lucky enough to be able to afford treatments for) extremely clear skin, so her need for heavy foundation was slim. What she had in her personal arsenal wasn't nearly enough to color the deep purple hue of her shiner.

She was almost positive the theater geeks had something, though. They were always in make up on stage. There was bound to be something strong in their drawers. And they wouldn't mind if she borrowed some. They wouldn't even have to know it was missing. If she got caught? She was pretty sure it was worth it not to have to wear sunglasses on her face the entire day. People were starting to stare at her. The story of her mugging hadn't gotten around, mostly because she hadn't told many people. Pretty much, only Sarah and Ariel knew about it. And she wanted to keep it that way, thank you very much.

"Well apparently it was a poor choice." Aaron sighed heavily and leaned on the counter, shoulders hunched.

"This is my fault, right?" He liked being an instigator, but not if it led to a huge ass face bruise. On a girl. No thanks, he didn't like being responsible for that, one bit. "Look, you did it all wrong. It's not safe to ride the subway alone, especially not your first time. And if the sun is down, you're probably doing it wrong if you're alone." He started rifling through the makeup drawer again. He found a shade he liked and held it up to her face. Perfect. Now for a yellow conceler.

If there was one thing she wasn't expecting, it was Aaron Lavigne claiming fault for her bruise. It sort of felt triumphant. Here he was, admitting that he'd been to blame. Only, Rielle couldn't let him do that. Because he wasn't. And he'd been nice enough to, at least, not rub it in her face that she'd been robbed.

"It's not your fault," she sighed, falling back into a nearby chair with a not-so-ladylike slump. "If anyone, it was the sexy bum's fault. But I'm pretty sure it was mine." She crossed her arms over her chest as if this would protect her from feeling vulnerable. It didn't.

Aaron raised an eyebrow. The sexy bum. What?

"What?" He glanced up from his search, "There's no such thing." He shook his head at her and pulled out a yellow concealer. There was a chair not far from where he was standing. "Sit," he said, pointing to it adamantly, "We're going to try to cover that shit up. At the worst, you have a mild case of pink eye. At the best, You slept on your eye wrong. Okay?" No more wearing sunglasses indoors. That was a terrible idea. He would hate to see that trend started over her black eye.

"Maybe he wasn't a bum, then. He was the only other person in the station. He smiled at me, even." Why were people jerks? It stood to reason that the sexy man was a bum, because he was stealing her money. Why didn't he have a job, or parents, that gave him money? The very idea that he had to take hers gave her the distinct impression that he was poor. And very possibly homeless. But he'd definitely deceived her by being all sexy and smiley and then elbowing her in the face.

"Everyone is going to laugh at me, aren't they?" Pink eye was sort of disgusting. If anyone asked, she was so not going to say that was her issue. They'd laugh even more. "Why haven't you laughed at me? You hate me. Why are you helping me?"

"Well, then he was an asshole, Rielle. People like that exist." He wasn't one of them, he hoped. He certainly had standards that didn't involve punching girls in the face, or elbowing them or whatever this guy had done to her. Whoever this guy was, hobo or not, he was a dick. Aaron did not approve. There were lines that should not be crossed, no matter how entitled and out of place a girl might look in a subway station, she did not deserve a black eye.

"I don't know. I guess you could say it's an allergic reaction, too?" In one eye? Unlikely. But it sounded better than pink eye. "I don't hate you." He replied with great difficulty. That wasn't the problem.

She pulled her hair pack into a ponytail so it'd be easier for him to put makeup on her face, then leaned forward in her chair so he could reach. "I know assholes exist. I just didn't think... I don't know. I don't know what I think, I guess." She closed her eyes.

"You don't like me, though." He might not have hated her, but he definitely wasn't her biggest fan. Which was fine. But why was he helping her?

"Well, so long as you know." Now. Obviously. He wasn't sure what her view on the world was, at this point, but he was positive it was somewhat skewed, if she tried to ride the subway without at least one friend. God, she probably wore heels. If she wore heels and not some kind of lawyer/stock broker lady suit with it, she was in trouble. What else didn't she know about NYC?

Aaron found a clean looking makeup sponge in the drawer. He opened up the yellow concealer and dabbed a little of it on the sponge and gingerly applied it around her eye, "Maybe not, but you don't like me either. It seems we are at an impasse."

"Then why are you helping me?" She pulled back for a moment, so he couldn't avoid the question by pretending to be busy.

Well that was his plan. Jeeze Louise! She was so difficult. "I don't know. Because you look like shit." And maybe he felt responsible, but he wasn't just going to spill that bit of information with provocation.

"Look, do you want to look a little more normal, or not? I do this for a living." Well, not really, but he did get some pay out of it. And frankly, he'd gotten quite good at it.

"Fine," she said, defeated, leaning forward once more. "Make me not look like... shit." At least he wasn't cutting her hair. Make up wasn't permanent. If she didn't like what he did, then she could always wash it off. But honestly, whatever he could do was probably better than what it looked like now.

"Have you ever been hit in the face?"

Aaron rolled his eyes. She was still being difficult, even in the face of him being totally helpful. But whatever. He was going to fucking be helpful if it was the last thing he did. If only because it was apparently annoying to her.

"Many times." He replied without so much as a pause. It was true though. He'd been in his share of fights. Sometimes he wasn't lucky enough to have Wes around. Mostly he was, but even when he was there, Aaron was stubborn and scrappy. He liked a good fight, and he'd known his share of black eyes. He dabbed some more yellow concealer around her eye, and stood back to decide whether it needed a little more.
