Entry tags:ariella silverman, eden adler, june 2012, toby silverman

Who: Ari & Eden, maybe Jack, Toby, and Scott too?
What: Shabbos dinner and a semi-shidduch date!
Where: The Silvermans
When: Friday night, 8pm
Status: Incomplete

Everything was perfect and set. The table already had the candles lit on it; the challah was covered on the table and the wine was waiting for everyone to say kiddush; Ayelet had set out the best dishes and silverware. Everyone was just coming back from shul, including her own kids and husband who she'd coerced into going to minyan this week.

It may be Shabbos but there was something different about this one. Toby may only be 16 but Ariella was already hoping to set him up with a young lady. She was in no rush to have a wedding or become a grandmother, but in their community, it wasn't uncommon for someone Toby's age to be at least looking at girls who could make a lovely wife and keep a kosher home. Plus, it didn't help that all of Ari's neices and nephews and her friends' kids in the community were getting married and having kids of their own already. She knew Toby wasn't really into that whole scene but Ari still had high hopes that he'd grow to like it eventually.

In no time there was a knock at the door and Eli ran ahead of Ari to answer it. "It must be the Adlers," she said excitedly as Eliyahu pulled open the door to let them in. Ari stood behind him and smiled from ear to ear. "Gut Shabbos!"

Eden was a little disgruntled that Jack said no to her brilliant plan but whatever she had another plan and sure she was positive her parents would ground her for it. Also it wouldn't react badly on Toby...it was all her. For the night and to perfect her plan she wore a pale yellow dress, that had been sitting in the back of her closet ever since her mom bought it for her one day. Over the dress she wore a white camisole. Also she was still in the phase where she let her hair rest and recover from her coloring regiment so it was her natural chestnut brown color. Also she put on a star of David necklace that she got before her bat mitzvah...she hadn't worn it since then. But tonight it would be perfect. Yes, she looked quite the part of a proper Jewish girl. The kind of girl her mother and Toby's mother always hoped she'd be. The kind of girl Toby's mother wanted Toby to marry. She had to bite her lip to hold in her laugh...boy were they in for a shock.

Eden was broken out of her thoughts when she heard the door open. She glanced up to see Mrs. Silveman open the door. She put a sweet small smile on her face and leaned in to give her a gentle hug, "Gut Shabbos, Mrs. Silveman, thank you so much for inviting us, it was so kind of you."

Ariella smiled from ear to ear when Eden hugged her. She knew there was a good reason that she wanted this girl to marry her son and this was one of those reasons. Eden had her natural hair color back, was dressed nicely (even if the dress wasn't as modest as Ari would have preferred), and she was such a lovely young lady from what she could tell. Her mother might say differently at times, but in front of Ari, she was nothing but perfect for her baby boy.

"My pleasure," she responded to the girl as she leaned over to half hug Mrs. Adler and kiss her on the cheek, like they were already related. "Please, come in! Dinner's ready - it just needs to be brought to the table."

Eden noticed the bright grin on Ari's face when she pulled back from the hug. It was much like her parent's smiles when she came down the stairs dressed for the evening. Sure there was some shock that she wasn't wearing one of her vintage band tees and her combat boots like she normally wears. She was certain they would be happy if she wore a black dress even. So seeing her in a sunny yellow dress and looking so natural made they praise Je...well not Jesus, but praise the Lord that their baby girl had changed her ways. She had to bite back a chuckle again, oh she was going to crush their dreams so hard tonight.

Surprisingly Eden did feel a little bad but she needed them to get it through their heads, she is agnostic, and she is NEVER coming back to the faith and even if she did she wouldn't marry Toby. He's her friend and that is the only way she can view him. Also Sarah is pretty chill in her book and she and Toby seem happy together and she wouldn't want to fuck with that. Part of her might say she was doing what she was doing tonight to maybe make Toby's announcement about Sarah (whenever he chose to do that), less crushing to his parents. Because tonight she would probably officially be out of the running for "Toby's future wife."

She glanced around putting a lightness in her steps to seem like the bright, chipper, good girl she was pretending to be that night. "Where's Toby? I want to see what he thinks of my dress, it's new, I hope he likes it. I wore it special for tonight."

If Ari's grin wasn't big enough, Eden asking for Toby was the topper on the cake. She pointed to the dining room and smiled from ear to ear. "I'm sure he'll love it. He's right down the hall and to the left in the dining room." As she sent Eden on her way to find Toby she bounced a little from foot to foot while hugging Eden's mom. The two of them had been hoping that their kids would like each other and get married some day, for quite some time now.

After a minute of jumping around and hugging at the prospects of the night, the two of them composed themselves. Ari tugged Rachel with her down the hall to the kitchen to start getting all of the food on the table. "I made a few dishes that you said Eden loves," Ari assured Rachel. "You're all our guests of honor, after all." She grinned and the two mothers hugged again. Things seemed to be falling into place just like they had been hoping they would eventually.

The two women loaded up each of their arms with casserole dishes filled with food and made their way into the dining room where either of ther families were shmoozing.

Tobyhad just had a talk with his dad. For the moment he was feeling good but not great about everything. On the upside, he'd managed to invite Jack oveer for the evening to keep attention off the ridiculous wedding plans that were going on behind his back. He was only sixteen for Pete's sake! and frankly, Eden wasn't his type. Even today, in a sundress that looked more like it had come out of Sarah's closet than hers. Did someone brainwash her.

Instead of make a scene in front of the moms and stuff, he handed the silverware of to Ayelet (who did not seem happy at all to take it and gave Toby a very suspicious look, to which he rolled his eyes). He walked over to Eden, and with an extra bright smile for the audience said, "Hello Eden. Can I talk to you for a minute?" And with that he grabbed Eden's arm and tugged her towards the hallway.

Once out of earshot he dropped the hokey grin, "So, did they brainwash you or something? What's the deal here?"

Eden was still wearing that bright innocent smile, when she saw Toby. She knew she was friends with him for a reason since he returned the bright smile then tugged her into the hallway. Once they were out of earshot she chuckled,

"Oh Toby, trying to get me alone already." She tried to quiet her laughter when Toby asked what the deal was,

"No they didn't brainwash me, don't worry it's still me underneath all of this. This is all part of my master plan. It's the fun I was talking about. Don't worry though it won't get you grounded, I might, but you'll be safe. Also after what I do, you telling them about you know who won't be as big as a blow. Trust me, after tonight I will be out of the running for your future wife...you can bet on it."

Eden and her plans. He wasn't sure about this, he had enough on his plate already. Frankly, she was making him uneasy. But whatever. The whole evening, in his opinion, was teetering on the edge of a cliff before it even begsn. Best to just sit back and let it all unfold and look surprised when it all went to shit.

Toby sucked a sharp breath in through his teeth, "Okay, as long as you've got everything under control, I guess I'll just let you do your thing." He offered her the crook of his arm to go back into the dining room, "You do look nice though, despite the brainwashed thing."

Eden could tell that her words of assurance did nothing to calm Toby, but honestly she would be the one who came out as the bad one in this situation, and that is just how she wanted it. She was the bad Jewish girl...or actually non-Jewish girl. However she'd play the part to make their parents thing the whole marriage was going to happen then crush it before the night was over.

She placed her hands on his shoulders hoping to calm him somewhat, "I do Toby, trust me, I have everything under control here. Just follow my lead and then act surprised and horrified then you'll come out fine. Trust me I think you'll know when to act surprised and horrified." Eden rolled her eyes when he offered her the crook of his arm, but decided to take it, it would give both their parents a thrill. She laughed slightly when he said she looked nice despite the brainwashed thing, "Glad you approve honey." With that she fixed that fake bright smile on her face as Toby led her out to the dining room where their families awaited.

As Ari and Rachel made their way into the dining room, they stopped and watched Toby take Eden aside. Their heads turned simultaneously towards one another and they smiled like two goofy little children. While the two kids talked, Ari set the dishes she had full of food onto the hot plates that adorned the table and took the ones that Rachel had as well to down in their proper spots.

"What do you think they're talking about?" Rachel said in a whisper to Ari. She shrugged her shoulders and smiled, "Hopefully Eden's saying that she wants to come back to Yeshiva in the fall." The two of them beamed and took their seats at the table. Each of the men were at the heads of the table, with their wives to their right, with spots for the four kids on either side of the table. Eli had decided to hop into the chair right next to Ariella and Ayelet took the one beside Eli. It left two open spots, side by side on the opposite table with Rachel Adler.

Ari and Rachel eyed each other from across the table and smiled. The night couldn't be any more perfect than it was turning out to be. "Toby dear," Ari passed over the metal kiddush cup to him with a small matching plate beneath it. The cup was overflowing with a sweet wine that Ari had been saving for a Shabbos like this. "Make kiddush?" At that, she stood up and everyone else at the table followed suit.

Apparently they weren't waiting for Jack. It sort of figured. Toby reluctantly accepted the cup from his mother. He wasn't crazy about being the center of attention. It was something like stage fright. He was very good at going through the motions though, so he wasn't exaclty worried about saying anything incorrectly. He probably would have had to do it twice though, had Jack been there, reciting kiddush in English for Jack after already saying it in Hebrew, thus lengthening the time in which everyone's attention would be on him.

Once finished doing his part, he drank from the cup and passed it to Eden, since he'd not so subtly been seated next to her.
