Maybe somewhere in her head Lily had known that sooner or later she would have to deal with this. It had been something she'd been putting off - something very unlike her. She was generally an organized, take charge, deal with what comes up as it happens sort of a person. With two kids of her own, the whole of her students and a war on hand it really couldn't be any other way... but here?
What was it about Hogwarts that caused everything to just rise to the surface? That caused the past to come back and bite you even when you weren't entirely certain that you wanted to go back and see it again? That wasn't to say that being here wasn't pleasant. But somehow it felt good when she allowed herself to fall back into it, but wrong when she realized that being a student again at her age just wasn't where she was supposed to be. That while the Compound was home now - out of necessity - that going back wasn't always possible...
And that was part of her problem. It wasn't that she'd been running, just not thinking about it. Not wanting to. It was another major complication on top of all the other complications that she'd run into when she'd first been taken. It woulds be a year come January. She had it marked on the small callendar she'd found and put in her dorm. Was that what it was now? A complication?
There were things she didn't want to say. Things she didn't want to admit to herself. Yes she'd spoken with the female version of her hu... of Severus, but she'd been partally avoiding his other self, the one who looked so much like him. Who acted so differently... She wanted to know him but she didn't know where to start. She remembered the last time she'd run into him, how he'd acted towards Wesley. How rude he'd been to Greta...
She didn't even realize that she was pacing the common room. Waiting for Peter to arrive so they could go out on patrol. She'd spent her last two patrols alone and that clearly hadn't turned out very well. James, Cheshire, had been right. Lestrange made her uncomfortable. And it probably didn't help that she'd seen him take out one of her fellow order members up close and personal. But if it was one thing she wasn't, that any lily wasn't, it was weak. They didn't intimidate easily.
Life could never be simple...
