First Day at Work

Rating: NSFW - Grumpy Goyle's internal monologue is a bit sweary.

So far, Greg hated Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. He hated that the wards had bounced him out when he'd tried to apparate directly into the shop, he hated the stupid bright pink uniform that didn't fucking fit properly across the shoulders, he hated the customers and most of all he hated the cash machine that kept trying to bite his fingers off. He was lucky that his natural expression was moody or else his anger would have been plain for anyone to see. As it was, it was all he could do to keep a civil tongue in his head and keep reminding himself that he couldn't just walk out and go home. If he'd had to try to smile through it all, he might have exploded.

"No," he said, for what felt like the tenth time already that day. "The effects aren't permanent. None of the effects are permanent." Did this idiotic woman really think Weasley would be allowed to sell his 'Canary Creams' and 'Headless Hats' if the effects were permanent? He glowered at his would-be customer until she dragged her son away to look at something on the other side of the shop. Goyle huffed out a sigh of relief - and then bit back a groan as he heard the front door open. Now what?

It was Tuesday, not one of Percy's favourites but definitely a day he could live with. It was also the last of his four days with Lucy, and whe he had her on workdays, he brought her with him. His department was already quite accustomed to seeing her at a desk of her own in her father's office, either working on her letters and numbers per Percy's wishes or playing quietly. She was actually quite well behaved at work, which made the arrangement one that was suitable to all.

He thought, however, that she could use some time out of the office, and as he had nothing pressing, he thought it was an excellent opportunity to visit with Uncle George. His brother, however, was not the face he saw when he entered the store, and Lucy hugged Percy's robes as they approached the new person.

"You're new here, aren't you." It wasn't a question, and Percy looked at the man with a touch of suspicion.

It felt to Greg like Potter took an eternity to finally leave him alone. It was exhausting, being on your guard that completely for that long but Greg's relief was short lived. He'd been restacking the display of Skiving Snackboxes when he heard the door once more. It only took a glance to inform him this was almost certainly one of George's brothers. Greg didn't understand why George had hired him if it meant his friends and relatives were constantly going to have to pop by to make sure Greg wasn't... He didn't even know what they suspected he would do. If he'd wanted to hurt Weasley he could have done it without taking a job in his shop, wearing stupid pink robes and talking to customers all day.

Unlike some purebloods, he wasn't sufficiently up on the gossip to know which Weasley he was now facing. The oldest one had some kids already, he thought, so maybe it was him. "First day," he grunted, certain the man already knew that. "Can I help you, or are you here to see Mr Weasley?"

Percy hadn't heard from George since the incident with the quills (for which he continued to vow revenge), and so he hadn't been apprised of the new hire (not that George kept him in the loop anyway, though Percy often found out eventually when he came to help his brother with the books). The man opposite him wasn't familiar at all, but the last thing he wanted to do was chase off one of his brother's employees (at least without there being something to chase him off for).

"Well, we came for a visit with or without George, but I had hoped my brother would be here. I'm Percy, and this is Lucy. And you would be?" he asked, notably ignoring the now bouncing Lucy who was tugging on his hand, her eyes focused across the store on what was no doubt a display of canary creams. He was beginning to suspect she was addicted to the prank treats.

"Mr Weasley's taking a break," Greg said. He was fairly sure that George was still in the back, or else upstairs. He hadn't seemed at all willing to leave Greg in the shop on his own, but he'd said he was going to grab something to eat and Greg wasn't going to interrupt that. On the other hand, if Percy wanted to go find him Greg wasn't going to stop him either.

He nodded to their introductions. "Gregory Goyle. Most people just call me Goyle." And he hated when anyone except his friends called him Greg. It just didn't seem right. Greg glanced behind him to see what the little girl was looking at, but he wasn't about to interfere with someone else's kid.

Percy nodded, the name sounding familiar but only in the way so many names were familiar in a closed in society. Nothing particularly reviling was triggered at the moment in his memory, so he relaxed slightly - only time would tell if the man could be truly trusted around Percy's daughter.

"Well, Mister Goyle, I hope your employment for my brother works out. It takes a particular temperament to deal with the type of clientele that is drawn toward the joke shop."

And speaking of temperament, Lucy took advantage of a moment of Percy's inattention to slip from his grip and sprint down an aisle. Percy tried to follow but she was smaller and more maneuverable, and by the time he got to her, she'd already stuffed a canary cream into her mouth. He groaned as she started sprouting yellow feathers, giggling all the while.

"I hope George taught you the remedy for the canary creams!" he shouted to Goyle, picking up his own canary and carrying her to the front counter. "He refuses to show me so he can keep slipping them to me when I'm not paying attention. And to her too, though she doesn't need any encouragement from him. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was aiming to be a Hufflepuff."

Greg frowned at Percy's words. He wasn't as stupid as some people thought he was, but it still annoyed him when others used fancy words when plain ones would do. It felt as though they were mocking him, expecting him not to understand. Honestly, in his school days that had been the reason, often enough. So he took extra time to mentally make sure he understood everything that Percy had said before he replied. "Thank you." He didn't feel very grateful, and his voice and the tense set of his shoulders made that feeling obvious - but he felt he had to acknowledge every part of Percy's statement. Much as he wanted to, he didn't know what else to say. He doubted he had the right temperament to work here, really, but it was a job and he'd needed a job.

Greg let Percy follow after his wayward daughter without following - glad to be free of the scrutiny - until he heard Percy's shout. He joined them quickly, wand out and ready for action before realising that the situation didn't truly merit the reaction. "It wears off," he pointed out, feeling as if he'd been summoned for nothing. Though, yes, George had taught him remedy, which Greg had picked up quicker than Weasley had apparently expected. He cast it now, wordlessly so he wouldn't get in trouble for spilling his employer's secrets. He shook his head as Lucy became a little girl again. "She shouldn't eat things she hasn't paid for." He was still puzzling over what the connection was supposed to be between Hufflepuff and canaries. Just because they were yellow? "Maybe she wants to be a bird, like Ravenclaw."

"I remember that it does wear off," Percy replied in a long-suffering voice, not directed at Goyle but at himself and his brother. "I would, however, like to keep her time as a canary to a minimum if possible."

He nodded approvingly at the remedy and managed a small smile at the man. "Thank you kindly. And I know she shouldn't, but she knows by now that I'll pay for it." One way or another.

He took a moment to pat Lucy over to make certain there were no stray feathers still in place, ignoring her overly pleased expression. "Oh, she definitely enjoys the feathers far too much, that's for certain. She's certainly intelligent enough for Ravenclaw, but is unfortunately reckless enough to be a Gryffindor, as you've seen."

He stood up straight and reached into his pocket for a couple of galleons. "This should more than cover the sweet," he said as he handed it to Goyle. "And the rest you can keep for yourself... in exchange for not mentioning this to my brother, of course."

Greg nodded. He could see that taking a canary out shopping with you probably wouldn't be ideal. Shopping was bad enough already without making it more difficult. He managed a small, tight smile back when Percy confirmed that he would pay for the eaten treat. One less thing to worry about getting in trouble for.

"Guess you'll find out when she's 11." He'd never had any doubt as to what house he would be sorted into. For generations his family had been in Slytherin, and his mother's family was similar. It was the only proper house for Purebloods. Or at least, had been. So many things were changing since the war that Greg wasn't sure anymore. Maybe if he had children they might be in Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw - though the latter seemed unlikely. He was still quite certain no child of his would be sorted into Gryffindor.

Greg's eyes shot warily to the cash register as Percy handed him the money, but quickly zeroed back in on Percy's face when he said he could keep the rest. Was he joking? He wasn't laughing, and it wasn't as if he had an audience. "Thank you." It would never occur to him to wonder if Percy were testing his loyalty to his employer, anymore than it would occur to him to turn down free money for any moral reason. "I won't tell." He closed his hand around the coins tightly.

Percy nodded, but with a bittersweet look. "I both look forward to and dread the day she's eleven. I already spend less time with her than I would like, but to be without her for several months at a time? Absolute torture. I have no idea how my parents did it, though there were so many of us, the house wasn't completely empty until Ginny started school."

He made note of the acceptance and left it at that - it wasn't that Percy was overly paranoid of George finding out about Lucy's transgression, it was more that it saved him one less bout of teasing, and perhaps gained him an ally on his brother's staff - something that could always come in handy, particularly for family surprises. "Excellent. We won't bother you much longer, I presume you've work to get back to. But again, congratulations on the position. I suppose we will be seeing much more of you in the future."

Not knowing what to say to that, Greg shrugged again. His own parents had been only too pleased to send him off to Hogwarts and let someone else mind him for a while. His mother had never been like Draco's, sending sweets and letters and news. He smiled more genuinely when he thought of Narcissa, who'd always included something chocolatey for him and Vince along with all Draco's favourites. "You've just got her?" he asked, more because he felt he should say something than because he was actually interested. He'd already forgotten the girl's name. L-something he thought. Laura? Lauren? It probably didn't matter.

He made a vague gesture to the Skiving Snackboxes he'd been restacking. "Just keeping things tidy until more customers come in." He glanced once more at the cash register, still preferring to avoid it if he could. "Do you want a receipt?" If Percy didn't, maybe he could just put Percy's money in with the next customer's. Then at least he would only risk getting his fingers snatched off once. So far, Percy seemed far more polite than Potter had, congratulating him on his position rather than suggesting he might loose it any moment. Greg mentally put it down to Pureblood manners. Potter had been raised by muggles, hadn't he? "Thank you. Maybe I could move the Canary Cremes to a higher shelf." It was his own way of showing gratitude, and indicating that he wouldn't object if Percy and his daughter came in again.

Percy noticed the smile on Goyle's face and thought it must have something to do with thoughts of children and school. He did cringe, however, at the question about Lucy. There were still many who disapproved of unmarried parents - though almost as bad were those who 'praised' Percy for wanting his daughter for more than a day or two per week. She was his daughter, it was his job to help raise her, and Percy was nothing if not dedicated to his work, whatever it was. "Lucy spends four days with me and four days with her mother. It's an arrangement we find works quite well." Hopefully the young man would leave it at that, as Percy wasn't quite in the mood to defend his choices in life at this moment.

"A receipt won't be necessary," Percy waved off, and then was taken aback when Goyle offered to move the canary creams. He'd often suspected his brother had made certain they were close to the ground just so Lucy could reach them, and he thought it was quite a nice gesture on Goyle's part to offer to change that. His estimation of the young man immediately changed quite a bit.

"Thank you, that would be much appreciated. Don't let my brother give you too hard of a time, all right?" He extended his hand, an offer of peace if there ever was one.

Greg really wasn't giving over too much thought to Percy's living arrangements. Whatever the reason for her parents living apart, at least Lucy still had two parents. That could only be a good thing. It also hadn't really answered his question, but he supposed if Percy had more kids he'd have said so.

A little surprised, Greg shook Percy's hand. To him it wasn't that big a deal, he wasn't going to get in trouble for moving stock around - not if he waited for a good opportunity and made sure to replace the custard cremes with something else and not leave an empty space. But he shrugged and shook his head, mumbling something about the cash register being more of a worry than George. He stepped back just as another customer pushed through the door, looking flustered. Greg's jaw tensed a little and he nodded at Percy before heading over to see what the stranger needed.
