RP: We need to talk
Who: Alicia and Adrian
What: Adrian's confused and worried
Where: Adrian's flat
When: Wednesday 12th August, evening
Rating: SFW for now

Adrian had been left confused and concerned by Alicia's note asking him to look at houses with her, but she had agreed to come over to talk over dinner. He'd set aside his work early to tidy the apartment and made a simple meal of ziti and chicken scampi. Once it was finished, he'd set a bottle of white Elvish wine to chill and poured himself a small glass of whiskey to settle his nerves while waited.

Adrian gave her a confused look. "Passive-aggressive?" He shook his head and smiled, puffing out air. "Not at all. I didn't think it was that," he said, putting a hand at the small of her back he directed them toward the kitchen where dinner was ready. "Let's have a glass of wine and figure things out," he suggested.

He hadn't assumed she was trying to be passive, he had just assumed she'd asked him to look at houses together, which was pretty forward, and surprising, considering they hadn't discussed anything of the sort, and that's what had confused him. Clearly, they needed to get on the same page about what she had asked.

Alicia nodded and let Adrian guide the way to the kitchen, though she knew perfectly well where it was. Taking a seat by the table, she thanked him when he poured her a glass of wine, and sent him a small smile as a toast before she took a sip, savouring the crisp taste of the white wine.

“You and I, we’re…” her smile brightened and her eyes sparkled at the thought of what she had with Adrian. “We’re, well, dating is hardly the right word, because it’s more than just casual dating and it’s good. So, so wonderfully good, and do I want more?” She chuckled and looked up at him as she nodded. “Of course, I do. I mean, you’re you and you’re amazing and I love you, but I know that this is new for you and I have time. I’m in no rush. I know you’re not just going to up and leave because…” she was getting off track and held up her hand in apology. “You’re not just my boyfriend, you’re my friend, too. We were friends before this, us. I need to get out of that house, and I couldn’t think of anybody I’d rather have with me when looking at houses than you because… you know me, you know what I like, you know what the twins like.”

Adrian couldn't hide his smile when she began rambling, especially considering the topic. She was so right. And when she had made her point, the light dawned on him like a sudden wave - she wanted him to look with her, not for them. "Oh Salazar," he breathed, "I'm an idiot." He smiled softly at her. "I thought..." He didn't know how to say it, "Well, it doesn't matter what I thought," he shakes his head.

Reaching over, he took her hands in his and said, "Of course, though I can't help but ask... With everything else going on on, all the changes you're making this year, might it be better to wait just a bit longer?" Adrian knew they both wanted more, and he'd been sure since he decided to tell her his family secrets that he wanted Alicia to be his wife someday, he had no question, but he knew it was too soon for both of them - all of them, considering the twins - to ask such a question. He also knew that when he did, he wanted them to have a home together and even all ready knew what and where he wanted that home to be. But if Alicia bought a new home now, that may throw his plans into chaos, and he abhorred chaos.

Of course, knowing all of that, he wanted Alicia - always - to do what was best for her and the twins, no matter his wishes.

Alicia looked down at their hands, Adrian’s words buzzing around in her head right along with all the considerations she had been doing for the past several months. “I don’t know,” she finally admitted. “I love that house, really, I do. It’s where my children were born, it’s…” the house Daniel bought me was left unsaid. She drew in a deep breath before she looked up at Adrian. “I don’t want to sell the house, I just feel like a-a-a- a fraud for living there, for getting back into my life that in some ways are the same as the plans when we moved there and still so completely different.”

“Liam and Isla… they won’t be changing school, we’re just starting fresh, with the house or the flat, where Daniel’s ghost won’t be lingering. Where I won’t feel that teeny tiny bit of guilt that I don’t feel whenever I’m here.”

"You might be interested in a flat?" He asked, the wheels immediately turning in his head. A flat was far less of a commitment than a house, and he hoped to propose in the next year or so, he'd feel far less selfish for doing so if she hadn't just bought a house for her family.

Of course, it was selfish for him to even be considering in himself in this equation, but he was still a Pucey, after all.

“Yeah,” Alicia said, looking at Adrian as if his question didn’t make sense. Because it didn’t. Why wouldn’t she be interested in a flat? “There are some really nice flats in both Kensington and Chelsea that are close to the school and practically? Well, come September I’ll be a student again, and a single mum of two in a four floor house in Kensington doesn’t exactly lend to that image, does it?”

Her smile turned into a smirk. “I’ve lived in a flat before. Tiny, cheap, secondhand furniture, kitchenette instead of an actual kitchen.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes and smirked at her answer. "Secondhand?" He asked, grimacing. "No." he shook his head, and his face settled into a more serious pose and then he cocked his head, looking at her thoughtfully.

"Well then, why do you even have to look?" He asked.

“Yes, secondhand,” Alicia chuckled. “Healer apprentices, even for a Quidditch team, doesn’t get paid very well, and I was so set on being adult and proving that I was independent that I didn’t let my parents my the furniture for me.”

Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion at his question, though. “Why do I even have to look?” she asked. “Because… I… am not the type of person to buy real estate unseen?”

Adrian grinned, a scheming smile if there ever was one. "But you've seen the place I'm thinking of." He stood and look around pointedly. It was a large flat, he knew, the entirely floor of his building. He'd simply have to move his potions work, which was easy enough with a full floor of the building still unused.

“What?” Alicia looked at Adrian trying to figure out what he was talking about. She knew that smile, knew that just about anything could come from him smiling like that. It was his Slytherin smile, and the smile part of it was what assured her, because then it wasn’t anything bad he was planning.

Then, as he looked around him, it began dawning on her. “Here?” she mouthed, pointing to the floor, then opened her mouth a couple of times, but finding herself at a loss for words. “You want us to move in here?” she finally asked. “With you? All three of us?”

Adrian couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, nearly doubling over. When he finally caught his breath he moved to her, stooping down to be eye level with her where she sat at the table. "Why not? I've got a second room for the kids, we're almost always at one house or another anyway unless work keeps me away and this way the work would be here. It doesn't have to be 'permanent'," he assured, though he fervently hoped it would be, "but if you're looking to get out of your house, and..." he took her hands, "You know how much I love you, how much I love Isla and Liam, how crazy I go when the place is quiet because I've gotten used to the noise and the movement and not eating alone..." it sounded insane now that he admitted it all out loud.

"It's just a thought," he said, his face softening, not wanting to pressure her and realizing suddenly how crazy an idea it was on the spur of a moment.

Alicia’s cheeks heated up when Adrian laughed. She was touched and overwhelmed and feeling a little foolish for not having thought of it. But why would she have thought about it? This was Adrian’s flat, his workplace, his man cave. Of course, he had a lot of reasons why it would be a good idea, even if she was relatively sure that he was thinking them up on the spot.

And he kept talking. “It’s a good thought,” she whispered and leaned in to kiss him, wanting to erase that touch of insecurity she sensed in him. She loved him, and he was right; she knew how much he loved her, though she hadn’t known that he didn’t like the quiet after they had left. Frankly, she’d thought he relished it. “You had me a why not,” she smiled as she nodded. “We can try, see how it goes?”

He nodded, unbelieving. She was saying yes? "It's not like you wouldn't have a place to go back to if it... if it didn't work." He couldn't help but stumble over that last bit. He couldn't imagine anything not working with them. He did know, though, that it would be an adjustment.

"When were you hoping to leave the house? And, oh, what do you think the kids will say? I know there's no yard and it's a lot less space, and there's me, of course." What steady ground he'd gained when she said yes disappeared again. What if the twins didn't want to?

”Shh,” Alicia shushed gently, touching her finger to Adrian’s lips. “I’ll be keeping the house, but not as a back-up, because I’m not saying yes just to think it might fail. I’m saying yes, because I love you and because I believe we can make it work.” It was just that right now, the logistics of it wasn’t clear to her, but that would all be sorted out during the planning that would come later.

“I hadn’t set a date for when, just… when I found the right place,” she assured him. “And I haven’t a clue what Isla and Liam will say, but I will talk to them, listen to them, and let them weigh in on this, too. However…” Her smile warmed and she gave his hands a gentle squeeze. “They adore you and they already love it here. It’s not like the yard back in Kensington is huge. There’s the park here, and they can still go to both the Spinnets and the Fawleys from here. Just like from the house.”

Adrian smiled again and leaned in to kiss her, tender at first and then more insistent, feeling delighted and warmed and... so friggin' happy he could have danced, shouting, on the roof of the building if asked.

"I suppose I'll start by spending my weekend cleaning out the storage on the first floor. I might as well make use of the space and finally move my potions work down there. Sort of like I should have done when this gorgeous blond came storming over to tell me I was stinking up her office," he grinned.

Alicia chuckled into the kiss, a chuckle that turned into a soft hum as the kiss grew insistent. She loved this, loved seeing Adrian this happy, loved feeling this happy. For once, though, she did listen to the more rational part of herself that told her to look past the rush of delight and joy, to not be blinded by this. But even when she did that, there wasn’t that tightness that came from making a decision she wasn’t completely certain about. Hell, she’d felt more uncertain about buying a pair of shoes than she did about this, and that had her smiling even brighter.

“Gods, she was such a bitch, but she was right,” Alicia grinned back at Adrian, and gently nudged her nose against his. “And she’d be happy to help you with the cleaning if you need it.”

Shaking his head he said, "No, this is a project I should have done ages ago. You've got school starting now and the kids and now all of this to think about, too. I'll do the cleaning and movie. Plus, if the twins wanted to help we'd have to tell them no just for safety and I'd hate to have to do that." He stood back up and moved back to his space at the table.

"We should eat," he said, still feeling nearly giddy. He took a drink of his wine, and thought, "You know, I'll have more space down there, I might even be able to do more, and if the kids wanted to start learning basic potions work, they could have their own space down there, too." The more he thought of it, the more he realized he should have thought of moving his space down there ages ago.
