Birthday Bash
Who: Seamus and open for multiple threads
What: Seamus's birthday
Where: The Roost
When: Saturday 27th / Sunday 28th June [foredated]
Rating: SFW for now?

Seamus had debated over the theme of his birthday for hours. He'd known that he wanted ice cream, but none of his own decor ideas had been inspiring. Dominic had suggested a camping theme, which Seamus had been enthusiastic about for all of ten seconds before realising how much Dean would hate it. Eventually, he'd settled on a sort of park feel. Where better to eat ice cream, after all?

One wall held the table, magically chilled, with all the flavours of ice cream, the cones and the cups, the sprinkles and sauces. Dominic had fashioned wooden screens that looked like muggle ice cream vans to attach to it, and all four walls were grass-green and sky-blue. The rest of the room was slightly too-crowded with park amusements. A see-saw, a set of swings, a family-size swing, even a sandbox in a nod to Dean's last birthday. The ground didn't quite feel like real grass but it was close enough, and the air smelled like summer.

Come midnight, the larger accessories would disappear, leaving the room empty for people to spread blankets and sleeping bags and cushions over. Seamus was expecting at least his closest friends to stay the night.

Dean and Open

Dean had spent most of his Saturday after being turned out of the pub puttering around making a couple of things he could reheat later in the week. He'd been to his parents house for a quick cup of tea and to pick up the sleeping bag his Mum had looked out between dishes too. Of course by the time he was done it was five past four and he was hot, sweaty, and needed a shower before he could leave.

When he'd arrived (not horribly late but later than he'd planned) he'd grinned hugely. The icecream he'd known about, but the park set was fantastic and he'd immediately dashed over to first Seamus and then Dominic to compliment them on the room. Then he'd ditched his shoes and sleeping bag by one of the walls and claimed a thankfully free swing seat. It was something that never really got old, and had the added advantage of nobody being able to come up behind him without getting smacked once he got himself going. It took him a minute or two to remember exactly the right action to get swinging decently, but soon he was doing just that, a relaxed smile on his face as he watched the other guests.

Susan arrived late - a rare situation that was brought about by a complicated mixture of hilarious and infuriating events which had coalesced to find her blasting her way through an infestation of Cornish pixies in her bathroom, whilst simultaneously providing moral support to her brother, who'd just broken up with his girlfriend, and who refused to uncover his eyes to help as she was still in her underwear. When she eventually arrived, she found the place to be utterly enchanting, and took a few minutes to inform Dominic of this whilst flirting with him outrageously, and then flinging herself at Seamus to babble at him excitedly.

Eventually though, she spotted Dean, who appeared to be having a rather excellent time on one of the swing seats. Shaking her head fondly, she made a beeline for him and stopped just outside of decapitation range. "Alright stranger," she called in a singsong voice, waving at him.

"Hiya," Dean said enthusiastically, not actually removing his hands from the swing to wave. He didn't want to end up going wonky and if he didn't pay attention that might happen he seemed to remember. "This is awesome, right?" he said fingers waggling to indicate the whole park and ice cream setup.

"How's things?" he asked as he swung towards her, pulling his knees and weight back at the apex of the swing automatically now he'd got going. He'd ask if she'd seen Seamus but frankly he'd been sort of spending some of his time letting his gaze linger on him so he was well aware she had.

Susan snorted indelicately and flopped onto the swing seat beside him, moving hers at a more sedate pace. "It's utterly awesome," she agreed fervently. "I can't believe Dominic did all this, I know some people in the experimental committees that would adore to get their hands on him."

She threw him an arch look, but decided to play the game. "I'm fine. Had to deal with an infestation of pixies and a broken hearted brother whilst trying to leave to get here, but otherwise I've been fabulous. How about you?" She followed his gaze towards Seamus and rolled her eyes. "Any romantic developments?"

"Man's a genius, I don't know that he'd want to work for the Ministry though. He likes all the challenges," he said, slowing his swinging slightly so he was less tempted towards huge grinning at the rush and more willing to talk.

He winced at her description of what had happened before she'd left. Clearly that hadn't been fun. Then he groaned. Of course she would ask. She wouldn't be Susan if she didn't ask. "Well my project is driving me crazy but otherwise not so bad." He shot her a look which said he clearly knew what she was getting at. "No, still delightfully pathetic," he said cheerfully, sort of amused at himself. "Oh and also grateful for the side effects of my potions for a change, so that's good. Ish." If she got his reference she could have at it, if she didn't... well it wasn't like he really wanted to discuss it as such. Just kind of wanted to get it out of his brain and the Battlescars journal thing hadn't quite taken off so it had felt like talking into the night sky. Something was out there but nothing was replying.

Susan made a face at Dean's comment, then nodded with a wicked grin. "I don't suppose I can begrudge someone for not wanting to work for the Ministry," she mused after a pause. "Almost, anyway."

"Oh yes, the one with the nightmares," she asked, perking up slightly at the mention of his art. She fully intended - some time in the not overly distant future - to skite about the fact that the famous Dean Thomas was one of her dearest friends, and then point blank refuse to sell any of her paintings to would-be collectors offering horrendous amounts of money. She jerked herself back to the conversation in order to pay attention to the future famous artist, only to give a throaty chuckle. "Delightfully pathetic eh? What a silver-tongued devil you are." She tilted her head for a moment at the mention of his potions - mentally categorising what sort of ingredients would be involved - when the sickle suddenly dropped. "Oh, so you're finding the lowered libido useful," she asked with an arched eyebrow. "I suppose it does stop you launching yourself at his crotch..."

"Some of us just aren't designed for the Ministry," he said. He might have originally planned to go to the Ministry, planned to go into DMLE but once the fighting had been over, aside from not being stable enough he was just done. He'd had enough of that. He had a feeling he'd have found that sort of structure overbearing anyway.

Dean nodded in confirmation. "Yup. If it turns out how I want it it'll be amazing but getting there's a whole other thing. Some of the layering I want is a nightmare of its own and there's the potions issue. Basically I've set myself this huge task, which as a distraction works great, but great Godric I could have made it less complicated." He was oddly reluctant to share exactly what he wanted to do because he was sort of set on it and it was turning out to be really tricky to work out.

He rolled his eyes at her compliment, he'd been half putting himself down, and it was honestly more luck than judgement that turned the sentence out so well, but he had to admit it had sounded good. "Yeah, yeah," he muttered, brushing it off. He should have known Susan would be able to work his comment out though. He was about to answer her question, even though it seemed semi-rhetorical, then she continued and he spluttered into surprised laughter. His swinging became slightly off-balance as he swayed and he slowed himself further so he could try and correct himself. "Oh, oh Merlin," he panted as his laughter died down. "I mean, yes, - well, more a glad it's circled back to low again thing - but I was never really in any danger of doing that, dammit!" he exclaimed. The fact that in his mind the launching seemed to take the general picture of him launching himself arms and legs splayed like he was doing a skydive, but self propelled, was really unhelpful. Amusing, but unhelpful.

"Busy wands make short work of big tasks," Susan replied in a mock pious tone, before nearly toppling out of her swing seat as she cackled. "Truthfully though, I think you'll pull it off and it'll look amazing," she said emphatically, primly ignoring the looks she received as she righted herself on her seat. "Just don't go mad and cut your ear off okay, no need to fall Gogh the deep end yeah," she added, purposely pronouncing Gogh in the Dutch fashion to make her pun worse.

She snorted at the bug eyed expression he made at her statement - a point for her - then joined in with his laughter, which sounded like rain on parched soil. "Oh come off it, that's a fantastic mental image," she declared authoritatively. "I mean just, he himself standing there blithely when all of a sudden 'what's that? Is it a bird, is it a hippogriff? No, it's Dean launching himself at a crotch!' and then I of course would give a polite clap and then score you out of ten." She paused and looked at him intently for a moment. "I think you'd need some sort of a cape though? Also, maybe like a costume with a penis on it. What do you say?"

Dean was far too amused when Susan nearly fell off her seat but mostly managed to restrain himself to a deeply amused face and pressing his lips together so he didn't laugh. A couple of little sputters escaped. And then she went and made a van Gogh joke. Of course she did. He snorted at how terrible it was. "He wasn't mad he was depressed," he said, but there was no force or real censure behind his words. "But really, that was terrible. And I'm sure I'll sort it out. There's just a lot of trial and error going on right now. I've been pooling brainpower with Braith and Bryony and a couple of other people I know, asking for suggestions." The parts of the project he'd really envisioned before he'd finished collecting submissions had taken all of about twenty minutes. It was the reality of how he wanted the finished product to look that made it massively more difficult.

"Oh my god, Susan!" Dean exclaimed, sputtering into laughter again, hanging on for dear life as his legs kicked helplessly and he slipped backwards on his swing. His swearing reverted somewhat when he was helpless with most emotions: laughter, anger, lust too truth be told, but there was no reason for any friends to know that last one. His uncoordinated swinging was bringing his swing to a sort of jerky almost-halt, but he didn't care because Susan's description just kept getting more laughable and he had tears nearly rolling down his face. He gave in to the inevitable and let himself slip slowly off the back of the swing, ending up with his calves over the seat, beating his lower legs in little helpless kicks. He had thumped to the ground slightly, but at least he'd fallen on purpose instead of by accident. Not that he was actually able to form a sentence because he was laughing too hard. Every time he thought he'd managed to contain himself he thought of something else. Like how this was far too appropriate given his gifts for Seamus, and also fantastically inappropriate. There was absolutely no way he could explain this without giving away his secret.

Susan grinned triumphantly as Dean snorted loudly at her horrific Van Gogh pun - she'd made him laugh, that was a good start to the evening. She didn't even argue when he corrected her on the fact that the man had been depressed as opposed to crazy. "Oh yes," she asked, furrowing her brow at him. "I mean the concept is amazing, and I've no doubt the results will be absolutely breathtaking." She paused and made the seat twirl slightly, trying to think of the most politic way to ask her next question while also not making it so nuanced as to go hurtling over her friends head - being raised by an Unspeakable and a human block of ice meant it was a consideration that she had to make with far too many of her friends. "Probably a little confronting too, are you handling it okay?"

"I'm sorry, this 'god' person isn't here right now dear, can I take a message," she asked as she watched him dissolve into possibly the most animated display of hysterical laughter she'd seen him give since they were at school. She felt a laughter of her own begin to form as she watched him fall gracelessly to the floor. In the end, it proved too much for her and she joined in the gaiety, spending a good several minutes laughing breathlessly with her friend. "Helga's breath," she said finally, wiping away tears from her eyes. "I know I'm funny but was it really that funny, handsome? What on earth's come over you, other than possibly the desire to don a cape and fling yourself at people's crotches."

He smiled, pleased that she liked the idea. He hadn't fully explained all the layers of what he was wanting to do to anyone really, even Bryony and Braith had been kept in the dark about some of the specific details even though he'd given them a better idea. "Thank you, and I really want to get this one right, you know?" he said. "It's not just for me, it's for everyone that's contributed, or felt they couldn't, or just feels something when they see it," he said. He already had a vague picture of it in his mind, fuzzy on the details in places, but it was like a beacon. He tilted his head and his smile softened at her perceptiveness and he took a breath, finding his way around the words. "I think that will come more when I get to the painting itself. I mean, yes reading some of the submissions was... hard, really hard in some cases, but aside from my own and one from Seamus I don't know who any of them belong to, not for sure and that makes it a bit easier. I've already done the mix and match thing and some of the combinations that have come out," he swallowed and shook his head, looking away. "Merlin they make them worse somehow." He heaved a sigh and looked back at Susan, one side of his mouth curling up ruefully. "I know you submitted, and I'm not going to ask because I don't want to know, but if you're like me the way it felt to get them out in the open was a bit of a relief and the way it will be to paint them... it's like that multiplied. It's therapy. For other people as well as me, just channelled through my brush." He raised his hands in a shrug. It was going to be hard, but it was also going to mean a lot. He'd used his art as therapy before though, almost from the start, and he knew how it went. An extra session with his therapist when he got to the painting portion might not hurt.

The comment about god being missing just increased his laughter for a while. He was so pleased to see her joining in though, she didn't let go like that too often either. As their laughter finally died away he clutched at his side, having laughed himself into a bit of a stitch. His other hand was swiping tears from his face too. The fact Susan mentioned flinging himself a people's crotches again thankfully made him snort. He bent back almost into a shoulder stand and swung his legs off the seat properly, before sitting up carefully, resting his chin and arms on the seat he'd recently vacated. "Minor hysteria?" he suggested, looking up at her. "I dunno, I'm having a good day, and I went with it. Oh, and the fact I gave Seamus magnetic dick poetry for his birthday really didn't help," he said, smirking at her, the latter sentence delivered in the most blandly conversational tone he could manage.

Susan nodded and reached across to pat him on the arm, nearly braining herself with the swing in the process. "You will, and when you do it will be the most spectacular thing ever!" She watched him intently for a moment as he disappeared into his head for a moment. "Yeah, I get that," she responded quietly, watching him sadly and knowing there wasn't really much she could do to help. he'd have to suffer for his art, as it were. "I did submit, but I'm glad I didn't get to see them, my Auror side would've tried to make deductions - though I'm fairly bloody sure I could make some rather uncomfortably astute guesses about yours and Seamus' if nothing else." She smiled sadly again and nodded. "I think it will definitely help some people, and if it happens to help you as well then I say all the better!"

Once they'd finally gained control of themselves again, Susan wiped her eyes, glad that she'd cast the necessary spells on her makeup to stop it running or smudging unattractively. She'd made that mistake before, and had vowed never to wander around a party looking like the bastard of a badger and a racoon ever again. "Hysteria and a good day work," she said approvingly, before choking violently at the mention of magnetic dick poetry. "Oh sweet Merlin and Morgana, you got him WHAT? That is absolutely marvellous."

Dean smiled, thankful for the support, even if he wasn't quite sure how he'd manage the feat as yet, or that his art would be really so spectacular, no matter if he managed exactly what he wanted with it. He thought about it for a second and nodded. "I can understand the impulse and that's partly why I've mixed them up, but honestly I've not had the urge to think about it too hard. There are a couple even I could probably work out if I wanted but I let people do it anonymously for a reason.

The grin on Dean's face was both pleased and slightly wicked. "Yeah, I mean mostly I was getting him a nice frame for the photo of us from Victis Honor Day, but I was wandering around one of the department stores looking for a couple of little bits to go with it and there was this display of different magnetic poetry sets, they're all these individual words you can use to make up stupid poems, or sentences. Some of the sets were all deep and meaningful. Figured Seamus would appreciate one full of dick jokes," he said. "Muggles stick 'em to the fridge usually, but there are special boards too. Not quite sure what Seamus will use, but it should be fun."

Susan smiled winsomely at her friend, touched for a moment about her wonderfully he embodied the good Gryffindor traits - nobility, chivalry, and bravery chief amongst them. "That's what makes you a good person," she replied at last with a smile. The fact that you've purposely decided to not work them out. The lack of underhandedness is so refreshing." She tilted her head in consideration for a moment. "Of course it means that you'd make a horrific investigative auror, but I think we both know that you're definitely more suited to the role of an artiste."

"Merlin's breath, they sound amazing. I should get some for mum actually, she has a fridge in the kitchen out of a weird sense of nostalgia. I love that you got Seamus the phallic ones though, it uh, definitely gets to the point of the situation you have. Really takes it in its hands and hefts it. Absolutely takes the long view." She grinned at Dean, her eyes twinkling wickedly. "So were there any other novelties, and what else did you end up getting him? I'm trying to gauge whether my presents were acceptable."

The jerky little nods of Dean's head were meant to indicate that he did his best. "Well, you know, if it was me submitting to someone else I'd not want them to try and work it out, I figure I should give other people the same courtesy." He snorted, there was no way he could argue with that particular point. "I know it was my aim originally, but I would have been pretty awful at it, whether the war happened or not," he mused.

"They're great, and you really should, it's pretty fun. I played around with them in the shop before I bought one." Admittedly in the shop he had used the words from the regular set to make random sentences that mostly made no sense at all. Susan's particular description however made him snicker like the teenager he'd been randomly feeling like of late and he grinned back, picking through his words carefully. They'd never been his best way of communicating, at least not when he was trying to be clever, random spewing of words he was all over. "I mean, I had such a hard time choosing what to get him. There were plenty of things that might rise to the occasion. I found him something to keep his hands busy, since I know he likes to fiddle and play with whatever he can get them on," he snorted to himself and shook his head. "No, right, yeah. I got him a these pens that are also drumsticks so he can annoy the hell out of basically everyone, and I ended up getting the photo frame from Camden anyhow," he said with shrug. "Plus, breakfast in bed. No, not like that," he said to forestall any comments on that front.

Susan nodded thoughtfully and tilted her head in agreement. "Whenever I engage in some form of cunning sophistry or chicanery, I always think about the fact that the sorting hat mentioned during my sorting that there was almost some Slytherin aspects to me, but I was definitely a Hufflepuff." She chuckled at his statement and nodded, her eyes tinged with a touch of sadness. "Yes, well best to let sleeping dragons lie."

"I definitely will. Merlin knows there are times when my father turns Rosethorn a little too bleak, so a nice injection of whimsy could be just the ticket. Plus, I'm interested to see how long it takes Edgar and I to start battling over words to make the weirdest sentences." The smirk fell off her face and she guffawed as Dean returned her volley off puns and swept through with some choice ones of his own. "Oh Dean, you're a treasure," she sighed happily. "Oh fuck, really," she sighed. "I'm guessing I'm forbidden from breaking them or shoving them up his arse, aren't I? The drumpens that is, the picture sounds lovely." She chose to ignore the comment about breakfast in bed, because really, it was far too easy. "I got him a flag signed by the entire Kestrals team, and some concert tickets, and I may be dragging him out to buy him a new damn broom."

The smirk that spread across Dean's face was a thing which both lacked a huge amount of surprise and was full of pleasure. "Now, somehow that doesn't surprise me all that much. Some of us were nearly Hufflepuffs too, as you well know. But I think the fighting Death Eaters unarmed proved I was meant to be in Gryffindor," he admitted. That moment was something he was very proud of, even if he didn't talk about it often. Of course blood purists were usually screwed when you just decided to deck them, so it had worked in his favour in the end.

"I'd guess probably about three minutes knowing you two," he said. He had a feeling he and Seamus were going to be getting creative with the set in the flat. In fact Susan would more than likely join in knowing her. He grinned back at her when she laughed at his jokes. He tried to turn that into a stern frown but knew he'd managed comic more than anything. "No, you can't, no matter how tempting. I sort of didn't think that one through properly," he said. "He'll probably end up braining himself with one when he tries to throw them up and catch them though, if that helps at all?" he offered. Actually he wasn't totally sure it hadn't happened already, miraculous catch the previous morning aside.

Dean gave a low whistle. "Well know who is going to be popular," he said. "Although that means if we go flying the git is going to beat me in races. Ah well," he gave a philosophical shrug. The fact that losing a race meant he could fly in watching Seamus' arse wasn't the worst compensation in the world.
