Lunch
Who: Bryony and Astoria
What: Lunch, conversation
Where: Rosa Lee Teabag, Diagon Alley
When: Thursday may 28th, afternoon [backdated]
Rating: Probably SFW

After her 'date' (did it count if he didn't show up?) on Tuesday, Bryony had tried to hide out in Braith's studio to avoid the awful interrogation from her mother. It hadn't worked. She'd had an owl on Wednesday afternoon which calmly stated that she would, of course, be having dinner at Pineview Hall and she hadn't known how to get out of it. The meal had been as bad as she'd expected, and if it weren't for her lunch with Astoria she wasn't sure she'd have bothered to leave the house on Thursday. As it was, she put on her nice, not too formal robes, sighed at herself in the mirror - Astoria always looked so perfect - and then made her way to Rosa Lee Teabag for tea and sandwiches and, hopefully, cake. After all, if men weren't going to show up to meet her after they'd agreed to do so, what was even the point in trying to look nice or lose weight?

As usual, Bryony was right on time. She had a quick look through the windows of the teashop and, unable to see Astoria inside, decided to wait for her by the door. The weather was nice - blue sky but not too hot and Bryony wasn't ready to go in just yet. She knew Astoria wouldn't forget to come, but perhaps there was still a nagging worry that if she sat down at a table alone to wait she might find herself facing the same humiliation as on Tuesday.

Astoria was excited for her lunch with Bryony. She'd been spending quite a bit of time on her new house (it was almost ready for a house warming party, she was certain of it!), and her mum had asked her for her help with a party she'd been planning for the start of summer. Although she suspected she (and her sister) would be required to make an appearance, from what Astoria could tell, it was a party more for her parents' friend than one that would include anyone around her own age. And, in part, she was grateful. She loved parties most of the time, but she was too busy with thoughts of her own that she didn't want to help play hostess at one of her parents'. Still, she did enjoy helping her mum out with figuring out what serve.

That Thursday, she dressed in a pale pink robe, deciding to keep her hair down. Although she made sure she looked neat, clean, and well presented, she kept it casual. This was, after all, a lunch with a friend and not a fancy dinner! She did, however, wear heels that matched her robe and Apparated into the Leaky Cauldron a few minutes before their agreed upon meeting time. She gave a polite nod to the bartender before heading out the back and making her way into Diagon Alley.

As she walked toward Rosa Lee Teabag, Astoria was thankful that the weather was nice. She was thankful she hadn't needed a cloak today, and it idly got her thinking about the summer and swimming. She wondered if Bryony might want to head to the beach with her this summer, and she thought she'd ask her about it as she caught sight of her friend. She quickened her pace, a happy smile on her face.

"Hello," she greeted brightly. "I hope you've not been waiting too long."

Despite some slight, understandable, envy, Bryony smiled brightly when she saw her friend approaching. "No," she assured her. "I only just got here." She'd have said it whether it was true or not, but actually Astoria hadn't kept her waiting long - Bryony hadn't expected her to. "Shall we go inside? There's a nice table for two by the window."

The atmosphere at Rosa Lee suited Bryony almost perfectly. Not so formal she felt suffocated, but not so casual that she felt out of place or uncertain. It was nice having some basic etiquette to hold onto, though Bryony did feel she was getting better at adapting to new places. They were seated at the table Bryony had spotted and their order for tea taken so it could brew while they looked over the lunch menu. The room was pleasantly fragrant, and Bryony took a few moments to look around before returning her attention to Astoria. "How are you?" She had brought a small present, shrunk to fit into her bag, but she wasn't sure right now was the right time to present it.

"Yes, let's," Astoria said before heading inside with her friend. She was, if she were honest, quite hungry. The fact that there was an open table with a decent view made her both happy and grateful. She'd stupidly skipped breakfast, though she doubted that'd make good conversation, so she kept it to herself as she began looking over the lunch menu.

"I'm well, thank you," she replied brightly, looking up from her menu and brushing a bit of her hair behind one ear. "Still fussing about the house, and Mum's asked for a bit of help, but honestly well. How are you? Anything new or exciting in the world of Byrony?" she asked with true interest. She set her menu down to give her friend her attention.

Bryony gave a soft hum at the question, glancing over the menu but not really taking it in. Her 'date' hadn't been exciting, far from it, but she supposed it had been new in a way. "Mum's trying to find me a date for Shauna's wedding," she started, which was unlikely to come as a surprise. Iris Capper had been setting Bryony up on sporadic and unfulfilling dates for years, ever since the Capper-Flint arrangement had fallen through. Bryony knew Marcus would be only too willing to take her to the event - he wouldn't even care that the papers would probably report on it - but Iris had put her foot down that it wasn't proper to be seen so much in the company of one man while she remained unattached.

"I was supposed to meet someone on Tuesday," she continued, watching Astoria without making actual eye contact. "He didn't turn up. Mum wasn't happy about that..." Bryony hadn't been ecstatic either. Though she tried to squash it down as much as possible, there was a tiny part of her that wanted to meet someone who actually liked her. Unlike her mother, she wouldn't have cared about blood status or wealth. Her failed date was just another reminder that whether she wanted it or not, it wasn't possible.

Astoria rolled her eyes a little bit when Bryony told her her mum was trying to find her a date to her sister's wedding. Her own mother enjoyed playing matchmaker as well, and she wondered why mothers couldn't just mind their own business. Of course, her mum and her dad would likely reason that their children were their business, but that was hardly the point. And it was, she realised, a bit sad and a bit embarrassing that no one had ever asked her out because of her and not because someone had set them up. She again felt like she were in school when she was sure there was something wrong with her. However, she pushed the thought aside. She was not here to mope about her own inadequacies. She was here to enjoy time with her friend.

"He's not worth it then if he can't even show up," Astoria said with a nod. She reasoned if Bryony's mum had to set her up on dates, and they didn't show, they were not worth Bryony's time. In fact, she was pretty sure Mrs Capper was wasting her time and energy, though she had enough sense not to say that to Mrs Capper. At this time, at least. Still, she said, "Your mum has awful taste in men if she can't even pick one who turns up." She smiled, her voice light, trying to make Bryony feel better.

"Honestly, how are you supposed to break hearts if she can't even pick a decent heart for you to break? We should let her know she's fired and hire someone with better taste. We'll let my mum know she's fired as well. Just be done with mums trying to set up their children! We'll go to a professional or one of those singles mixers or something," she declared, mostly joking. She'd never actually thought about going to something like that, but that was partially because she didn't know if anything like that existed in the area. The other part of her felt silly going by herself. Still.... "We could even host one of our own. See about booking one of the rooms at Finnigan's or if the dance club would be down for it, and we could invite singles only and have a fun time chatting and eating and drinking and dancing or playing games or planning some fun day trip or something." If nothing else, Astoria thought it was fun to think about possibly doing that.

Bryony managed a small smile. It was true, her mother's taste in me was absolutely nothing like Bryony's own fleeting inclinations. She was focusing on family name, blood status, wealth, political history - and was quite inclined to suggest men much older than was really socially acceptable. Whether she assumed Bryony would prefer that - she had been engaged to Marcus for most of her life - or whether she just didn't care was hard to work out. "Maybe he didn't want to be there either," Bryony suggested. "Maybe his family set it up and he just decided not to come." It actually made her feel a little better, made the rejection of it sting a little less. Maybe it really hadn't been personal and had just been an act of rebellion.

"I don't want to break hearts," Bryony pointed out quietly, frowning as she pushed her menu aside. "I don't really want to do anything." If that wasn't quite true, well, Bryony wouldn't admit it even to her closest friends. Not even Marcus knew how much she wanted to meet someone she liked and how utterly impossible it seemed to her that anyone could ever like her back.

She had to force the frown off her face as Astoria continued. The last thing Bryony wanted was another opportunity to be rejected and overlooked, but Astoria seemed to be getting into the idea. "That would be nice," Bryony lied. "Of course I'd help you. And it might get our mothers to stop pushing for a while."
