RP: Catching up
Who: Pandora and Marcus

What: Lunch

Where: Finnegan’s

When: Tuesday, January 27

Rating: SFW for now, potential for swearing?

Dora smoothed a hand over her hair as she slipped into a chair at Finnegan’s. Elroy had reminded her while she was working that she’d made a lunch date with Marcus, who she’d seen dreadfully little of lately, and that the time was coming up. She’d pulled herself out of her work, put on a nice but regular robe over the clothes she’d been working in, and headed for the pub.

She was actually a couple of minutes early, unusual for her, who usually pegged it right on the minute. Never late, never early, except today, apparently. So she snagged the small table before anyone else could and scanned the place, on the look out for her friend. They had some catching up to do.

Marcus had been a little worried about being late for lunch - he'd gotten caught up in talking with the Healers at St. Mungo's who had been taking care of Phillipa, and it had taken longer than he expected. And longer than he strictly thought necessary, since they couldn't actually tell him anything new, which was a little irritating.

As it was, he left the hospital and headed directly to Finnigan's, trying to let go of his minor bad mood as he did so. After all, it would be good to see Dora again, and he didn't need any of his annoyances getting in the way of their conversation. Stepping in the front door of the pub, he glanced around the room, spotting her already at one of the tables. He made his way over and offered her a smile as he approached, saying, "Dora. Good to see you."

Dora got up, face brightening, when she saw him. She smiled at him, very glad to see him, and stood on her very tippy toes in order to attempt to kiss his cheek before they both took a seat. Why did all of her friends have to be so very much taller than her?

"Good to see you too, love," she said, sitting down. Marcus was another of the few she was very comfortable with. They'd shared experiences during the war. Looked out for each other. "How are you, Marc? I've missed you lately but I've been so busy I haven't had time to hunt you down properly."

Bending down to return the kiss to Dora's cheek, Marcus was still slightly amused at the height difference between them - he was accustomed to being taller than most people, especially women, but the top of Dora's head barely reached his chest. He had to imagine that to someone else, they looked to be an extremely mismatched pair.

"I haven't exactly been around for hunting down," he told her as they sat. "I just got back into my flat about a week and a half ago." After everything they'd gone through together in the war, he didn't feel any hesitation about explaining his absence, albeit in a rather succinct manner. "I had to go back to the Manor for a while and look after Phillipa. She's in St. Mungo's now."

Dora grinned up at him, silently acknowledging their absurd height difference. She patted his cheek before he straightened fully, or else she'd have had to tiptoe and maybe climb up him in order to do so.

She wrinkled her nose in sympathy and sighed. "Oh, I'm so sorry it's come to that," she told him. Family meant so much, even when they were being idiots and she wondered if she hated hers or loved them more. "Is there any chance of her getting out of there again?" Gods above and below, she hated that hospital, even though she knew it wasn't terribly rational. She hated the thought of anyone in there, though she knew they'd take good care of his mother.

She was pleased, though, that Marcus was able to be back at his place and be involved in life again. She did worry about him, like she did about the few people she'd bonded with during the war.

Marcus shrugged slightly, at both the acknowledgment and the question. "I don't know," he admitted quietly. "The Healers haven't been able to tell me anything I didn't already know." Which he felt couldn't be a good sign, not with as quickly as his mother had been declining while still at the manor. It was harder to judge now that he didn't see her everyday, but he had to imagine that he would have heard if there had been any improvement, at least.

It was a relief to be back in his flat though, and he was getting settled back into his own routine, or as much of one as he could with the break from Quidditch. "How've you been?" he asked, more than happy to steer the conversation away from Phillipa - she took up enough of his time and thoughts, and didn't need to intrude on his outing with a friend.

She reached forward and squeezed his forearm sympathetically. "I hope she improves," she told him softly. She couldn't imagine going through that with her own mother or any of her family, but she felt for him having to do it.

Dora shrugged, hands wrapping around the drink that had just been delivered. "Things could be better, things could be worse," she said, taking a sip and then sighing. "Which is to say the public is still full of jerks, and my brother is the biggest jerk of them all." She shrugged again. If anyone besides Tristan would understand, it would be Marcus. "But it's not all bad. I have a nice place of my own now, with Tristan, and there's a guy who has no clue what I am but likes me so far. And lots of work to keep me busy."

And keeping busy was key to keeping her head, most days.

Nodding his head in thanks, Marcus couldn't bring himself to say anything in response. There was a part of him that felt that it would be better for everyone involved if Phillipa just didn't recover from her illness this time. While he didn't have very many (if any) good memories of his mother, he did know that she was no longer the same woman she'd been years ago, and he couldn't imagine that she was having a very good quality of life at the moment. Obviously, he couldn't voice those thoughts - hadn't even mentioned them to Bryony, who knew him best and would probably have understood - so he let the subject drop in favor of more positive conversation topics.

"Very philosophical of you," he teased lightly at her response, smiling to show he wasn't actually poking fun at her expense. "What did your brother do this time?" On occasion, Pandora's stories about her sibling made Marcus very glad he was an only child. Perking up at the mention of Tristan, he asked, "Oh? And how is Tristan doing these days?" He hadn't gotten a chance to talk to the younger man since he'd been released, something he should probably rectify sooner rather than later.

He couldn't stop himself from frowning slightly at her comment about someone not knowing 'what she was' - though he understood what she meant, it didn't quite sit right with him. "What we did back then doesn't define who we are now," he said quietly, hoping Dora wouldn't take offense.

Dora gracefully let the subject drop. She out of anyone knew how freakishly complicated family dynamics could get. Her own was hellish at best these days.

She grinned, taking the teasing in stride. The grin faded as she thought about Hyperion though. She sighed gustily. "So I finally confronted him about what happened the night I got the Mark, right?" She kept her voice quiet. "And it was all raging about me not telling him before, when I did try after I got out of Azkaban, and he wouldn' listen to me. And of course he has excuses both ways, the hypocrite," she said, tone scathing and disgusted. "So it's still all my fault." And it still hurt. "Like I could get away to go to him during the time." She rolled her eyes. Her brother would have wet his trousers if he'd had to deal with Aunt Bellatrix.

She did grin again at the follow up about Tristan though. "Good, I think? At least, better. I don't think he's adjusting as great as he could, but I don't think it's awful either. We both have bad dreams, I know." She shrugged. Who hadn't dwelt in that time didn't have nightmares, she figured.

She shrugged. "I know. But what you know and I know, the rest of the world still doesn't as a whole."

Marcus listened without interrupting, allowing Pandora to tell the story at her own pace. There was some terribly awkward irony in the fact that the discussion at hand had to do with joining the Death Eaters and Tristan, without the two subjects being linked at all, at least seemingly on Pandora's side. Marcus had no idea if she knew about his history with her cousin - he had never breathed a word of it to her, but Tristan might have. "We all did what was necessary to protect those we care about," he commented, remembering the innumerable threats against Bryony that had ensured his own compliance during the war.

"Who doesn't?" he asked rhetorically. While nowadays his nightmares were less frequent, they weren't exact a thing of the past, and all the more intense when they did happen.

Marcus sighed, inclining his head. "There is that, unfortunate as it is."

Her fingers toyed absently with her drink. She'd known Marcus would understand. Of course, so did most of them who had been of a similar age and pressed into unwilling service under Voldemort's reign. "We did," she agreed with a sigh and a downcast look. Everything she'd done had been done to save her family and her own hide. Certainly she'd gotten some wrong feelings out of it, but every moment of pain she'd suffered she'd done because her family had to stay safe. "Even if no one wants to understand that." Her voice held a bit of brittle bitterness.

She shrugged in agreement. They all had their nightmares. If hers still came at least seventy-five per cent of the time, well, she wasn't even sure if Tristan knew that.

"Are things going better for you in that vein?" she asked, propping her chin on one hand. She knew it was a detriment at times for his career choice.
