RP: Settled into the office
Who: Chris + OPEN
What: Chris is settled into his office at the Fawley Foundation & working on plans for the new organization. Or rather, procrastinating on those plans.
Where: The Fawley Foundation, Monument Alley
When: Wednesday 12th November, afternoon
Rating: SFW

Chris tapped the end of his quill against his desk. The staccato echoed through his office space - now furnished with an old desk his mum had picked up for him, a pennant for the Salem Witches' Institute quidditch team (a recent gift from cousin Andie), and an old comfortable chair he had to have sent from the Boston home of his Aunt and Uncle by Muggle shipping. Worth it, he thought, as he tapped out a new beat with the quill, his list of notes nearly forgotten.

Moving on to tossing the quill up in the air and catching it in as many different ways as possible, he rolled his eyes when he caught sight of the offending pad of paper. He knew he should be getting on with it. Equality. World Saving. Hunger. All that. But when giving an insane (in Chris' world) amount of money and a year of time and just one person... Well, where did you begin?

Julian had come by the Foundation office to drop off some paperwork after taking one of the orphans out in Hogsmeade for the morning. Wallace bounded along at Julian's side, grinning a doggy smile and watching his Master for any hint as to what they might be doing next. The dog loved children and Julian tried to take him whenever he spent time with any of the kids - in his experience, animals healed most inner hurts, or at least gave people a non-judgemental presence with whom they could better deal with them.

As they walked down the corridor, he paused, spotting an unfamiliar face in one of the office. He knew just about everyone who worked for the foundation - had shagged a few and propositioned most of the others, so he tended to remember faces. He snapped his fingers and turned around, going back in the direction he'd come from to go to the office door. He leaned against the door jamb and slid his hands in his pockets, and he didn't have to look down to know that Wallace had sat down happily next to him.

"Hello there," he offered with a grin. "You're new here, I see."

Chris leaned forward in his chair at the voice and looked up, "I am, and clearly using the space and time well." His smile was sharp. Was this guy from the Fawley family or something? He didn't look familiar but it was entirely possible they'd been in school together, but that didn't help Chris any. Were they checking up on him? They'd said he had a year, for Merlyn's sake.

Chris raised an eyebrow, "And you're not, I assume?" He still didn't stand, though.

"Quite well, I see, but then I probably wouldn't know work if it jumped up and bit me. At least that's what my grandparents always said."

He moved from the door jamb and approached the desk, Wallace following close behind. "The name's Julian Travers," he said, extending his hand for a shake and taking the opportunity to eye the other surreptitiously. Quite cute. "I was a friend of Daniel Fawley's, and I volunteer with the kids. They love to play with Wallace here. And what sort of humdrum do they have you doing, eh?"

Chris relaxed roughly a millimeter at Julian's response. Even if the Grandparents he mentioned were of the Fawleys, Julian didn't seem much to care for work ethic.

"Nice to meet you," Chris said, standing up now and reaching out to shake the other man's extended hand. "Wallace, eh?" Chris asked, crouching next to the dog to pet him in greeting. "He's beautiful, and certainly friendly," he praised the pup with a scratch behind the ears. Standing back up he shrugged, "Still figuring that out. The Fawley's wanted to expand their charity work, I've been doing charity work around North America for the last few years, and my parents both work in it here in the UK, so they gave me a year and a bunch of money." He rolled his eyes, "If only I could pick a cause."

"Oh, so you've been across the pond. It's quite interesting over there, I hear." He moved to sit in the seat across from Chris' chair, making himself comfortable with a leg over the arm and in general acting as if he owned the place - very typical for Julian. The other man had been kind to Wallace, always a good sign.

"So yes, a cause. I suppose it would depend on where your passions are. I'd be glad to help - I consider myself a bit of an expert on 'passions'," he added with a wink.

Chris nodded, "My mom's from there, Boston. When hell break loose we headed over and I finished up school there. Good thing, too, I was the only magick in the family at the time but then my little cousin showed signs." Shrugging, he said, "Interesting, eh, it's big, totally vast." He shook his head and smiled, "I once drove a muggle car for over five days, just stopping to sleep, and didn't make it coast to coast." The memory was a good one, when he'd decided to join his parents in Mexico, and his aunt and uncle had convinced him it would be worth the alone time and the drive. They were right.

Chris' eyebrows raised when Julian offered to help, and then his smile turned in a little less of a smirk. Finally, he laughed out loud. "Really? Then how come you wouldn't know hard work if it pinched you? Usually, people put hard work into things they're obsessed with." He grinned.

"My 'passions' you ask? I know you're dying to know. I spent a couple of years building homes for people who needed them in the American midwest, and worked on city poverty in Mexico. Back at school I was interested in the history of magick equality. I suppose that seems a bit passe now, with peace and all," he rolled his eyes. Prejudice still existed, no matter the face the Ministry put on Monument Alley. Just because people weren't being killed for being muggle born, didn't mean the other issues - the class system in particular - weren't problematic.

Julian tilted his head. "I don't know why you'd drive when you can Apparate, but I hope it was enjoyable."

At the man's laugh, Julian's look turned into something between a leer and a playful smirk. "Oh, I definitely put hard work into my passions. I don't get paid for them, is all and sometimes it's better to give than to sell. That's the whole notion behind charity, after all. And there are many witches and wizards out there who could tell you what a generous person I am."

Julian nodded with each example. "Well, you could always build homes here for low-income wizards. Something not a lot of people have thought about is how many people will be getting out of Azkaban over the next few years, and many of them don't have any family left to support them. Few of them will be able to find proper work because of their criminal records, and more and more will end up on the streets. Yes, you may not agree with their politics, but when thinking about managing a population, when people cannot afford a roof over their heads and food on their plates, they tend to turn to crime. A proper system to help them get back into civilization and give them opportunities for housing and work could go a long way toward avoiding a potential crime wave which would only cause harm to the public and repopulate Azkaban. But then, what do I know, I'm just a moneyed layabout with time on my hands."

He grinned as if he hadn't just said something thoughtful and took a ball out of his pocket. "Fetch, Wallace!" he called out as he tossed it across the office.
