RP: Flying!
Who: Alicia and Adrian, Isla and Liam, OPEN to everyone who’s at Alicia’s house, the Portree Pitch or around Isle of Skye
What: Going flying with the kids
Where: Alicia’s house, the Portree Pitch, or around Isle of Skye
When: August 27, 2004 – starting out at 9 am
Rating: SFW – there are children present

The house on Sheffield Terrace had been buzzing with life for a couple of hours. Isla had woken up right around the time the sun was up and had been in Alicia’s bed barely a minute later, jumping and cheering and letting out all of her excitement of going flying today. That in turn, had woken up Liam, who despite his reservations about flying was beginning to warm up to the idea, in large parts thanks to Alicia’s brother Sam, who had made the perfect mix of music and songs that were all about flying. With the two children bouncing in her bed, Alicia had fairly quickly given up on even attempting to pretend to be asleep in the hopes of getting just a few precious minutes more sleep. So she had sent the kids off with orders of picking out their clothes today, reminding them of the wind and the risk of rain before she had gone to get ready, allowing herself an extra-long shower just to wake up and allow the coffee to be just perfect when she was ready.

Going for practicality over looks, she still put on make-up and took her time getting her ponytail to be just right, before she pulled on the tight Swedish Short-Snout hide trousers and a long sleeved black fitted t-shirt. The sight that met her when she came out of her bedroom and they came barging down the stairs had her pause for a moment. Isla, unsurprisingly, had gone for the Quidditch gear, and was wearing the Puddlemere United jersey with ‘I. Spinnet’ on the back that Oliver had given them along with the matching leggings and her purple tutu while Liam looked like a miniature version of his uncle Sam in his jeans and Rolling Stones t-shirt.

Even though Adrian would be bringing pastries, Alicia still sat them down for some more sturdy breakfast, just to give herself and Adrian a fighting chance against the inevitable sugar high they were going to be on. She even had some yoghurt herself while she relished the taste of the perfectly brewed coffee, with just a small splash of chocolate syrup in it.

When 9 am came around, Liam had lost some of the nerve he had woken up with. So Alicia had put the CD Sam had made him in the stereo and the three of them running around the ground-floor reception room with their arms out while loudly singing along to the music.

Adrian had dressed simply in sturdy muggle jeans and a long sleeved t with his Falcons hoodie over it, knowing that Alicia and kids could less what he looked like and going for comfort. The twins would no doubt be a handful today and any little bit of comfort one could wring out was worth potentially ruining a good pair of jeans in a spill from one's broom.

He apparated to just outside the gate and let himself in, immediately wishing he'd knocked like a normal person. There was loud music and laughter and Isla was suddenly half attempting to tackle him, half dragging him into the reception room to dance with them. He laughed a grumpy, early-morning laugh and with a flick of his wrist the bag of pastries was floating just inside the room where he found Alicia and Liam also dancing and seemingly having a great time. "Well, who needs flying when there's a Wednesday morning dance party going on?"

‘Flying’ across the reception room floor Alicia caught Liam up in her arms, twirling both of them as she blew a raspberry on the side of his neck until he was howling with laughter. The sound of Adrian’s voice had her look up, her smile growing just a little bigger as she gave a quick wrinkle of her nose in lieu of a wave at him. “We’re just getting warmed up!” she warned him, and with a kiss to Liam’s cheek, she let him go, chuckling as she watched her son make a spectacle of wiping away the kiss and girl cooties.

With a quirked eyebrow and a questioning glance at the Falcons emblem on Adrian’s hoodie, Alicia went over to greet him with a kiss to the cheek. “Morning, babe,” she smiled at him. “We’ve been up since sunrise, so I think that if we’re to have a chance getting an actual taste of the coffee, we should just go right away and have breakfast at the Pitch.”

Adrian chuckled as Alicia and Liam joined him and Isla. When she kissed his cheek and called him babe he had a moment of feeling his cheeks warm in a blush and wasn't quite she way. They'd been friendly for nearly two years but not of the physically comfortable sort, and he didn't think anyone had ever called him babe. It, somehow, sounded right coming from her though, and he blamed that feeling for the slight pink of his face.

"Coffee to go it is, then," at her mention of the pitch he looked down at his hoodie and sighed, "I completely forgot we'd be going to Portree - you don't mind if you show up to work with someone in the enemies colors, do you?" He could always charm the logo away for the day, but his transfiguration and charms weren't his strength.

"And what about you, Isla?" He asked, scooping the giggling girl up into his arms as they moved quickly into the kitchen for coffee and the bag of pastries followed the group. "You don't mind being seen with a Falcons fan, yeah?"

If asked, Alicia couldn’t have told you why she had greeted Adrian the way she had. It didn’t really catch up with her until afterwards, when she chalked it up to having been caught by the playfulness that had filled the room. With a small, teasing smirk she shook her head. “No, I think I’ll let it slide. For today at least,” she said with an estimating nod. “Besides, it’s good to see that even your good taste is faulty.” She just managed to wink at him before he scooped Isla up.

Isla shook her head vigorously and tapped her chest to show off her own Puddlemere Jersey. “United rules!” she declared, pumping her little fist in the air with a giggle. “And Arrows!” Liam chimed in, racing up to take Adrian’s free hand leaving Alicia to fend for herself in this sea of mixed supporters.

“People’ll think it’s a League outing,” she muttered and followed them to the kitchen, where she poured the freshly brewed coffee into a heated thermos and added it to the bag that had already been packed with the harnesses, drinks, snacks and dry clothes for the kids and a selection of other necessities. “I asked them to leave the Floo open to us, so if me and Liam go first, you and Isla can follow?”

Adrian feigned hurt at her comment about his taste and looked to Isla in his arms. "I'll have you know that despite what your mother says, I have delightful taste. For example, you're my favorite girl in the world. Good taste, yeah?" When she giggled and then Liam had taken his free hand he looked down at himself and had a moment who am I and what have I done with Adrian Pucey but couldn't help the feeling that he was perfectly comfortable.

"Yeah, she's going to explain us away with our taste," he rolled his eyes and had the kids laughing again. He nodded in agreement with her and asked Isla, "You don't mind coming with me, right?" and then sent the bag of pastries floating to settle on the top of the sack that Alicia had packed for the day. "Shall we then?" he shooed Liam back to Alicia and took his coffee into his now free hand, following Alicia and Liam to the floo.

Though she tried to keep a straight face, even Alicia had to give in and smile. The view of Adrian and the twins having fun the way they were made her wonder what she would have ever done without Adrian in her life. No, he wasn’t Daniel and he wasn’t around every day, just like he wasn’t part of any of the decisions that constantly had to be made, but he was a good balance and addition to what Alicia could offer them. And he was one of those unexpected friends that just couldn’t be explained, no matter how much she tried. He was Adrian.

“I believe we shall,” Alicia smiled back and shouldered the bag she had packed, before she picked up Liam and through a bit of Floo powder into the fire. “I’ll see you there,” she assured them, called out the address for the public Floo at the Portree Pitch, and held on tightly to Liam as they whirled through the system and giggling spun out on the other end. “I hope the cakes didn’t break!” Liam gasped with a grin and moved willingly when Alicia pulled him away from the fireplace and started brushing off the soot and ash.

Soon after the flames turned green again, and Alicia smiled brightly when Adrian and Isla came whirling out of the fireplace. “We were beginning to worry you’d taken a wrong turn.”

Adrian caught Alicia's look just before she went through the floo and rolled his eyes at her. Merlin forbid anyone else ever see him the way he was with Isla.

After he'd taken Isla through he helped her brush the soot out of her hair and brushed himself down as well. "I considered stopping for ice cream but figured this one should wait till lunch," he joked.

"Alright, who's got a harness for us?" He took the bag off of Alicia's shoulder and sorted through it taking out what they'd need, helping to get Liam and Isla set for their flight.

"Have I got it right this time?" He wasn't quite adept at safety equipment and knew it.

Alicia’s eyes widened with something akin to fear when Adrian said the ‘I’ word out loud. She knew it was a lost cause, but still she hoped that the kids had missed, a hope that was crushed when after a beat both of them bounced and started cheering for ice cream. It took her a few minutes, but finally her promise of “After we’ve had lunch” finally sunk in, and they could begin getting the demons ready for their flight.

It didn’t take her long before she had the kids in their harnesses and her own part of the harness on, so when Adrian asked for help, she clicked the harness shut on her back and went to him. “Pretty much,” she said as she ran her fingers under the strap that went over his shoulder. Reaching across his chest she did the same thing with the other shoulder strap, hesitating only a moment, when the fragrance of his… was that his aftershave or body wash? Or did he just smell like this naturally? “S’just this one that got twisted.” She tugged gently, smiling triumphantly when it slipped into place.

Once he was on his broom, she lifted Isla up to sit in front of him so she could hook the carbine on Adrian’s chest to the loop on Isla’s back. “You’re all good to go,” she smiled at them, ruffling up Isla’s hair before she sent them off.

Liam, she noticed, looked at them with a mix of excitement and trepidation. “That’s fast,” he muttered, though he didn’t hesitate when Alicia held her hand out to him to get him on her broom. Soon he was strapped on safely, and they ascended at a reasonable speed. The higher they got, Alicia noticed, the whiter Liam’s knuckles on the broomstick became. “It’s alright, love,” she murmured to him as she put her arm around him and leaned into a gentle curve. “D’you see Isla and Adrian?”

When Alicia hesitated just a moment, her hands hovering just over his chest, Adrian couldn't help but notice how closely they were standing. There were moments like this, every once and a while, that he'd think back on in the evening and wonder. Had she noticed it, too? Had she thought that he could just lean forward and casually kiss her - quickly, fun - just like she'd greeted him as 'babe' this morning? But then she moved again and the moment was gone. He smiled at her, "thanks."

Isla yipped in excitement when Alicia declared them ready to go and squirmed in her seat, anxious, and so he set off quickly, not a full stop hard burn of course, but quickly to go from standing to soaring for Isla, at least. He kept them about twenty feet from the ground for a bit, waiting for Alicia and Liam to get going as well, and to give Liam a chance to see them doing lazy circles above his head.

Alicia couldn’t see Liam’s face, but she could sense his smile when he saw and heard his sister’s joy at flying. She was grinning herself when he nodded and leaned forward just the slightest. Alicia still had a firm around him, though slowly she eased it off so she could steer the broom with both of her hands.

“Do you remember the song Unca Sam sings about flying?” she asked him, her mouth by his ear, though she was still keeping an eye and ear out for Isla and Adrian. Again Liam nodded, and Alicia began humming. “Here I am. I’m on my own. For the first time really on my own. And everything beneath me seems to fade. Without a trace, without a shade.” Slowly as the song picked up speed she began flying in big swerves, steadily ascending, though never going too high or too fast. “Oo-ooh,” she continued, “Oo-ooh,” and soon Liam joined in; “Oo-ooh, I am… fly-iing. Oo-ooh, oo-ooh. Oo-ooh in open space.” She couldn’t help the happy grin when she heard him laughing. No, he would probably never be crazy about flying the way she had always been and Isla already was, but at least she knew that with a little inspiration he could at least enjoy it, rather than fear it.

As Liam continued the song, Alicia steered the broom in a wide circle, following the edge of the Pitch, looking up to was her daughter and Adrian. She waved when a happily giggling Isla waved to her, and raising her eyes just a little, she met Adrian’s with a warm smile. How she hoped he knew how much this meant to her, how much he meant to her and the kids.
