Mr. Forrest James was brutally murdered in his office, stabbed through the back while he stood in front of his desk, facing the wall. Scotland Yard, as per usual, was having one hell of a time trying sort out the murder and so they consulted consulting detective Sherlock Holmes.
Detective Inspector Lestrade had already taken the time to interview Mr. James' perky little secretary Alice Joseph, and this is the information he relayed to Sherlock Holmes about that interview.
1. There were no fingerprints on the knife found in the dead man's back.
2. There was a coffee stain on the rug (fresh) but Mr. James didn't drink coffee and there was no container for it in the room. (Lestrade suggested this must have occured during the struggle that resulted in the man's death.)
3. Alice had in her visit book just three announcements: Marcus Fowler (1:15), Eric Bernard (2:00) and Roger Melan (3:30). Apparently, the last appointment (Roger) was the only one of the three men to serve himself coffee in a paper cup.
4. The paper cup was found in Alice's waste bin, the only set of fingerprints on it belonging to Roger.
5. Forrest's wristwatch was broken, probably due to the fight, and it showed the time at 3:50.
Sherlock immediately told Lestrade who the murder was, based on this information...
