Ernie, love,

I miss you. After all that's happened in the past few days, I miss you more. Think you could come console a girl who's rather upset over the loss of two of her best patrons?

Love,
Hannah

Ernie took her hand and squeezed it as he perched next to her. He tried to dismiss awkward and old-fashioned feelings about propriety, hoping his face didn't show any discomfort. He was there for Hannah. However, he felt guilt when she talked about Ernie making things less confusing. How could he do that when he was bloody out of it himself? Still, he couldn't let her down.

He cleared his throat to keep emotion from it. "We'll figure out how to prevent this," he said in a determined voice. He hadn't gone into Law Enforcement just to push that damn parchment. What good was his job if he couldn't help? "I am going to see what I can dig up at the Ministry."

"Just...don't get in any trouble, okay?" she said, looking over at him. "I couldn't...if something happened to you..."

Hannah laced her fingers through Ernie's, needing the contact of a friend right now more than she needed anything else.

Instinctively, Ernie's body moved closer so that he could wrap a protective arm across Hannah's shoulders. Who cared about propriety then? Ernie scolded his meaningless thoughts. His best mate needed him, female in a bedroom or not. "I will be careful," he promised. "Always am, but..." A hard look appeared in his eyes. "But I don't believe all these things are just going to stop. Who next?" He shook his head again. No, it couldn't happen. The next ones could be his family or his mates or...no.

Hannah leaned into Ernie's embrace, needing to feel safe and cared for. "They won't," she whispered. "I told my dad that he needed to help. That he could help and do something about it. I hope he takes my advice. And I want to help. I just don't know how or what to do."

"How is he?" He asked softly. Her mother's death hadn't been recent, but Ernie knew it was still difficult. No man, least of all a Hit Wizard, could stomach the idea of not protecting his loved ones. "We could use men like him out there."

"Dad's fine, well definitely much better than he was when I left to come here," she replied, resting her head on Ernie's shoulder. "But he's not as much of a hard ass Hit Wizard anymore. He's mellowed in his old age. Not that he's old. You know what I mean."

Ernie thought about his parents. Yes, mellow seemed a good way to put it. "Maybe he just needed something to light a fire under him," Ernie suggested. And, really, what else would if not the latest tragedy?

"Yeah, I guess you could say that," she replied, closing her eyes. "I think I just needed to tell him I would be all right if he did go back to being an active Hit Wizard."

Ernie rubbed her back. He had never suffered such a loss and could only imagine how worried her father must have been about Hannah being "left alone" should anything go wrong. "Of course you would," he said firmly. "He's a smart bloke who can get himself out of a snitch! And you're one hell of a woman." He kissed her cheek. "Maybe he'll actually let me in on some things too." The wheels in Ernie's brain started turning.

Hannah's lips curled into the first real smile she'd felt on her face in days. "Now, you better not think about getting my dad into trouble," she teased. "He couldn't even tell me about the investigation and probably shouldn't have told me as much as he did."

"Now, you're his little girl. I'm a Ministry worker who happens to be very, very kind to his little girl..." Ernie winked, but then felt badly about it. He shouldn't have joked at a time like that. How improper! "I am sorry."

Hannah cupped his cheek. "Don't," she said. "It's easier when I can't think about it, which is what I wanted to do. You were brought here to distract me, so distract me in anyway you want, love."
