RP: Baking, Not Stewing
When: February 11, 2004
Who: Lavender Brown, Richard Summerby
Where: Richard and Lavender's flat, Clink Street
Private/Public: Private
Rating: All ages Adult
Summary: Lavender and Richard take a chance to talk.

Lavender wasn't sure whether Rich was just busy at the office or if he was avoiding her. It was awkward and she'd known that it would be. Next month would be different, she told herself. Next month, she would be more settled and everything would just be easier. At least, she had to think positively because there was no point in being negative about it all.

As in times of stress, Lavender had resorted to baking. Baking, she reasoned, did less damage than reaching for a bottle of something alcoholic. Possibly she now had enough scones to last for the next month. There was also a tray of chocolate brownies that had just come out of the oven, but she was waiting to eat them, instead turning to cook herself some pasta for dinner.

Her saucepan of water was starting to boil when she felt the wards shift to welcome Richard. The longer she lived here the more she adjusted to the sensitivity of the spellwork, recognising him more easily than anyone else.

She moved to the edge of the kitchen area to see him come in through the door. Lavender bit her lip, offering him a small smile. "Hi. Busy day?"

"You haven't seen anything yet," he smiled at Lavender. "Why do you think I have to work so hard not to be clingy?"

"Next month will be different," Richard nodded. "And I think it would be a good thing if between now and then, all of us, and talked about wants, and needs, and expectations, and fears. Think we can do that?"

"And speaking of all of us," he went on, "Valentine's Day. I thought there might be a party, but I wouldn't be going since its some pureblood thing and probably boring. There's a special dinner at the Leaky. How about if you, Susan and I go, we pick up Hannah when she gets off, and then someplace like the Alexander where we can dance all night? We can let your friends, Penny, the abrasive little Irishman, Parvati, anyone else, have them meet us, make a party of it ourselves. How does that sound?"

"Yeah, we can certainly try."

Lavender shrugged. "Sure. Um. Yeah, that might be nice," she decided. "Sorry, I - I haven't really been thinking Valentine's Day sort of stuff after the last couple of days. I'm half-tempted just to stay in, you know?" She sighed. "And please don't call Seamus things like that. It's not endearing in the slightest."

She pulled out of his embrace to check the pasta, stirring it before finding the olive oil and some parmesan. Where was the grater? Um... that drawer. Aha.

Biting her lip, Lavender glanced over her shoulder at Richard. "While we're being honest and everything?" she said a little warily. "I don't see anything happening between me and Susan."

"Whatever you decide, or I can stay with you or go out and give you some more time. Your call," Richard told Lavender. "We can even have everybody over and just loll about in the big tub if you'd like."

"And I promise not to insult Seamus if he promises not to hit me when he finds out everything about us." Richard sighed. "This is a lot more complicated than it should be. Ever consider moving to France? They're a lot more open about this sort of thing."

He watched as Lavender continued to work in the kitchen, thinking.

Richard blinked, caught by surprise at Lavender's admission. "Not even friends?" he asked slowly. "I had hoped you two could at least be friends and flatmates."

"I don't know. It's only Wednesday - plenty of time to decide."

She raised her eyebrows. "I'm part of this and I find it complicated. Unfortunately, I have no control over his fists."

Lavender looked over her shoulder at him. "Rich, I know you well enough by now to know that you were probably hoping for something more." Lavender gave the pasta another stir, watching it in the boiling water. "Flatmates, definitely. And I plan to work on friendship, I really do. But I'm worried it'll be awkward."

Richard nodded, "As you see best."

"I'll try to restrain my sense of low humor at Seamus' expense." Richard sighed, "He's just so intense, but I'll try to make nice since its you he's concerned about."

"Actually, after our little walk along the beach, I though you were, too." He shrugged, "Shame, really, because she is a sweet girl. We'll just have to see how things go over time, won't we? We're all feeling awkward still."

"Thank you." She appreciated that effort. Both men meant too much to her to want either of them to be upset.

Lavender shrugged, finding herself a bowl for her pasta. "I thought I was, too. But... I don't know. I've met her and spoken to her and..." Lavender bit her lip. "She's nice, but I'm just not attracted to her."

Richard waved a depreciating hand, "Anything for you, you know that."

"Neither of us will be pushing her at you," Richard nodded. "We'll just see if a friendship can develop over time, and you both can have as much distance as you want." He gave Lavender a tentative smile, "You did enjoy sharing Hannah, though, didn't you? I wouldn't want to think you'd gone along just to accommodate me. I really thought we all had a good time then."

He shrugged, "Other than Penny, you've never said, and I don't know, if you have any other lovers that we should even think about, or you'd want to include. You've given me a few hits about your past, and mentioned your two good friends, and that's been about it."

"I did," Lavender assured him. "Hannah is a lovely girl. I really enjoyed her company."

She shrugged, looking down. "I haven't said anything because there hasn't been anything to say. Penny was a... I don't know. Maybe she'd call it an anomaly or something. I would never carry on two relationships simultaneously." The timer rang out and Lavender stared at it almost tiredly before moving to drain the pasta. "One thing I would certainly never do is cheat." Just the thought of it could make her feel queasy.

Lavender lightly seasoned her pasta, then started to grate parmesan over the top, wanting just a simple meal tonight. "There's nothing notable in my past. I mean, I'm no angel, but I've never lived with someone or fallen in love or done anything dramatic like get engaged. Any relationships with women have literally only lasted a couple of weeks."

She smiled wryly, turning to face Richard as she held her bowl with one hand and stirred the contents gently. "Only one person has ever broken my heart," she confided. "Ron Weasley. When we were sixteen. But, funnily enough, he is the one who can't look me in the eye these days."

Starting to twist pasta around her fork, Lavender raised her eyebrows at him. "Enough backstory for you?" she teased.

Richard chuckled, "Is it cheating if everybody knows what's going on? Or if the relationship is a bit, shall we say, inclusive?"

He held out an arm to Lavender, "Women... men? You know it wouldn't break my heart if you wanted to play with some bloke? I care a lot about you, but wouldn't want to build fences around you." Richard shrugged, "Truth be known, I've been in the situation of sharing a girl with another bloke before, two of us at once... happened in Sweden." He grinned at Lavender, "Guys aren't my thing, but she found it a pretty hot night. I wouldn't mind doing that again if you thought you'd enjoy it."

"Ron is still a bit of a child," Richard laughed. "Keep him jumping, and I'll keep pushing him to be civilized, and then there's Hermione. Maybe something will sink through his skull some day."

"Only other question I have is what it would take to convince you that you should cook like you've been doing in just an apron and high heels?" He gave Lavender a happy leer.

"Don't think so. But I'm still trying to work all that out."

Lavender gave Rich a brief hug, bowl in her hands. Then, she went to sit on the nearest sofa, chewing a mouthful of pasta as she went. "Men are different than women," she mused. "You know it's not like a 50/50 split in my preferences, right? I would pick a man over a woman any day of the week." She smiled at his suggestion, not sure whether to be flattered by it or not. "While I'm sure your heart could handle me being with another man, I sort of doubt that mine could."

Seeing his leer, Lavender rolled her eyes. "Boiling water? Sharp kitchen implements everywhere? Very little clothing? I'm going to say keep dreaming."

"So'm I, if its any consolation."

Richard smiled, "And I'm very happy women are different then men. Just wanted to let you know its on the table if you ever decided you wanted to go there, or it just happened some time. I'm not going to go all freaky-deaky on you. You're young, you're strong, you could handle all the pleasure, I'm sure."

"Check the left side of my closet, there's my old dragon reservation gear hanging up in the back. There's a dragon-hide apron that will protect you from all those things, and you'd look so fetching in nothing but leather. Hmm. Gives me a thought of what to shop for. Any fetish preferences?" Richard laughed.

"Handle the pleasure?" Lavender cocked her head, watching him as she ate. "Physically... I have. Two men in my bed wouldn't be a new experience. I was talking emotionally," she told him softly, shaking her head. "The physical side of things isn't everything."

Lavender laughed, twisting more pasta around her fork. "Wouldn't say I have any fetishes, no. But I'm always open to ideas."

Richard was disgusted to find himself blushing again. He chuckled wryly, "Oh, well..." He shook his head, "I was talking more about on a play basis, but if some boy were to make you want to have him around, that's not out of the question either." He shrugged, "I guess fair is fair."

He rolled his eyes as Lavender had him blushing even deeper, "Ah..." Richard gathered his thoughts for a few seconds, "I was still thinking of leather and things when I joked about fetishes." He walked over to sit near Lavender, not crowding her while she ate. "You've never really taken charge when we make love, or asked for anything except that once. Is there anything you like that I'm not doing, or something I absolutely shouldn't be doing when we make love?" He took a deep breath, hoping his blush would fade one of these days, and sat back to listen to what Lavender had to say.

Lavender frowned. "Sorry. I think we're both getting a bit confused. What I'm trying to say is... is the way that I feel about you, I don't think I could be with another man, even if the offer was there."

She looked down at her food, smiling a little to herself at his blush and not wanting to stare at him and make him more embarrassed. "I suppose I haven't," she mused, watching pasta twine around her fork. "Hadn't realised." It wasn't as though she was ever left lacking satisfaction with him. "There's nothing that comes immediately to mind, Rich. But maybe I will start taking charge a bit more." Lavender smiled slowly. "I'm sure there are a few things I could think of."

Richard nodded, smiling at Lavender's words, "Just letting you know, if that changes at some later date. Not saying it will, or that we should have another man involved, especially if you don't want to."

"However you want," he said, resting a hand lightly on Lavender's shoulder. "All part of me learning about you."

Lavender looked at Rich almost pensively. "Considering that I think I'm in love with you," she said carefully, "I don't think that's going to change."

His hand rested on her shoulder and Lavender turned her head to kiss the back of it. "You should come share my bed more often," she decided. "So I get used to having you there, for next month."

"Being in love with me doesn't rule out being in love with someone else too," he replied softly. "And it doesn't rule out taking them to bed if you want to. Just knowing my feelings for you are returned is more than enough to keep me content, whatever you decide your limits are."

Richard gave Lavender's shoulder a gentle squeeze, "I've sort of been avoiding coming into your room when you're asleep and have to get up for work because I didn't want to disturb you. Some nights, too, I'm working late, and sometimes I just can't get to sleep, or the dreams about what happened during the war come back and I don't want to sleep that night."

Lavender smiled wryly. "You might be able to do that, but I don't think that's for me." He was the one who seemed to know so much about wolves and translate that onto her behaviour and preferences, but the idea that she might be compelled towards monogamy more than him seemed to be passing him by.

She shook her head. "You're welcome in my bed any time you like. I'm more worried about disturbing you in the morning than the other way around." Lavender bit her lip, thinking about Monday night. "I get it, you know. You like people around people when you're hurting. I'm there even if you just need someone to rest with."

Richard just nodded and smiled, "Whatever you think is best for you."

"I've been accused of being able to sleep through the crack of doom, if I don't have a reason to get up in the morning. Your moving about wouldn't bother me." He grew a bit more serious, "Coming back to England brought back some of the nightmares I used to have right after the war. Big problem is that they make me a bit touchy, something you can probably relate to. Not long ago, I accidentally put Penny on the floor, had her by the the throat, when she came up behind me at the Leaky and grabbed me. So if I don't come to you when I'm getting that way, its because I'm afraid I might hurt you, not because I don't value your care and company."

Lavender nodded slowly, finishing her pasta.

"I can understand nightmares, too. Don't have many, but they crop up occasionally." The one that plagued her on and off was just the memory of falling, just falling from that damned balcony. If she hadn't fallen... No, she couldn't dwell on that. "Like I said, you're welcome in my bed anytime you like."

"I..." Richard paused, wanting to make sure he got the words right, "the other night when we nodded off together, me still in you, half on top of you... I've... never felt, never done something like that with a woman before. It was more than sex, more than two people making love to each other."

He shook his head, "I'm not the best with words there's ever been, that's for sure. I just hope this does word out, because I could get used to that feeling."

Lavender twisted to put her empty bowl down so that she could move closer to him. A slight shiver went through her at his words - she didn't want to forget that night.

"Me neither. I never get emotional during sex, but that night... I've never felt more connected to someone." She bit her lip, almost relieved to hear him say that. "I really hope this works, too."
