The final review of Aero had gone as well as Peony could have hoped. It was not, perhaps, as clean and polished as Blizzard, but Quenten had worked hard, and the results were impressively controlled. There was no backlash any longer, and her aim was greatly improved. It made Peony happy to see her pupil showing such rapid progress when her beginning had been so rocky. She did wish that she had gotten her hands on Quenten sooner, before bad habits could form, but it couldn't be helped. Undoing years of incorrect technique was tedious, but the process was moving along well. "Sit with me," she said, leading Quenten to the corner of the room. She had had a table brought in to set close to the bench that lined the room's perimeter; the stone bowls and pitcher of water she had preset herself, although she doubted the scholar was aware yet that they were there. Once they were settled on the bench, Placed her hand on Quenten's. gave it a light pat. "You have been working hard." She did not dispense praise liberally, but she always gave credit where it was due. "I believe that if you are still interested in pursuing black magic, you may be ready to take the exam come fall. If your progress continues at this rate, you will have a chance to pass it." there were no guarantees, of course, but she believed in Quenten's ability to rise to the occasion. "If this is indeed your wish, then I've an idea of what is yet missing including," a smile which warmed her tone, "some of the real world experience you have been asking about." It would not, perhaps, be quite what the young mage had in mind, but Peony had been considering a series of small, controlled outings with some of the more advanced scholars. The details were still inconclusive, but she thought she was close to having a proposal for the council and the guildmaster which may not be rejected. "But first, she said, "before you are truly ready to call your studies complete, there is one thing in particular which we must correct. Today, you will begin relearning Fire." |
