"In which case, we ought to get started," Peony said, taking up the pitcher and filling a bowl with water. She had no doubt that Quenten would recognize the sound, maybe even wonder at it. Unlike ice, fire had nothing to do with water at all. That was what made this teaching mechanism both more difficult and more effective than others she had seen.
"We are going to try a different approach," she said. "Try to forget the way you have been taught to do it. Don't even think about the shape of the spell, as you perceive it." She placed Quenten's hands on the bowl, her own over them, then channeled the tiniest spark of Fire. Heat shimmered over the water, and the bole became ever so slightly warm. "Approach it as you did Blizzard," she continued. "Make the water warm. It takes only a trickle to do it. If you use too much power or try to shape the full spell, you will burn yourself." There would be quite a bit of Curing that would have to happen here, she was certain. Fortunately, Quenten had mastery of that spell, so Peony had not had to procure potions.
