Chloë's "day job" thieving around the city made her hours flexible and her own to decide. Most days she lingered about the more populated areas to see if she could overhear any particularly delightful morsels of gossip, but some days, like today, she made her way to one of the orphanages. Being an orphan herself, she knew that many of the children there only had each other play with and with kids coming and going, it made building bonds all the more difficult. She'd lived that and so she came to play with the children, though she never had any intention of adopting one. She couldn't afford to feed another mouth. Wait, that wasn't true. She could afford to feed another mouth, but with one excuse and another, she didn't do it. Chloë preferred not to think of the why and stuck to the more practical reasons she could come up with. Children were far more fun to play with than to have to look after all the time, right? "Where is the copper?" she asked holding two clenched fists in front of an eight-year-old child that scrutinized each one, trying to conclude where it was. The little boy gnawed on his bottom lip and hesitantly reached a hand out, slowly pointing toward one, then changing his mind to go to the other. Chloë unfolded her fingers of the selected hand to reveal its lack of coin. The disappointment on the child's face at making the wrong choice was quickly replaced by shock when Chloë opened the other hand to reveal nothing in it as well. "Where is it?" the little boy proclaimed and Chloë grinned, "Check your pocket." The boy looked at her strangely but then reached into his pocket, the look of surprise returning as he pulled the coin out. "How did you—" he started but cut himself off. Chloë grinned, "It's a secret. Now, run along." And the boy did, rushing to tell a couple of other children what just transpired. Chloë stood up and looked to see none other than Seloria Cassul standing not far from where she now stood. Chloë only knew Seloria to be the sister of Aspel, who, well, Aspel was Aspel and that was involved with affairs stemming from Ari that Chloë dared not try to work out properly in her mind. Even if it did make for interesting conversation. "Miss," she gave a nod to the other woman. |
