Matt & Clint

Feb 1 | G
Time for a little gossip

Matt had spent the latter half of the afternoon texting with Jim, still chuckling to himself as he'd teased his friend about his relationship woes as he'd walked through the apartment door. There were supposed to be some sort of party happening, but Matt had seen what parties were like here in Dunwich and he wasn't in the mood to get murdered for some new arrival.

So he and Clint were staying in, because it was the wise thing to do, and because sometimes that's just what you wanted to do. And who was Matt to buck the system?

"Have I said how glad I am that you and I are so very mature?" He asked Clint, an easy smile on his face, the lingering amusement still there as he dropped himself down on the couch, letting all pretense of his so called blindness dropped. There in the space he shared with Clint he didn't have to hide, and he didn't bother trying.

"Are we?" Clint asked, because he was pretty sure there'd been nothing mature about the fact that Matt'd wandered back into the house in the middle of the afternoon to find Clint still in pajamas and sitting in a way that could only be described as upside down on the couch, a mobile game of bejeweled loaded up on the screen of his phone.

To his credit, it was his day off.

Also to his credit, Lucky had taken over the bed and had actually growled when Clint had tried taking it back. Clint was under the impression his dog did not enjoy Dunwich living.

Still, he paused the game and let himself tumble to the side a bit in order to sit up in an almost proper way. Almost. "Who was being immature? Can I have three guesses? Never mind, actually. Just tell me about it."

"We most certainly are," Matt said simply, maybe not about all things and maybe not everyone would agree with him, but no one could say they were afraid of talking to one another. And as far as Matt was concerned that counted for a hell of a lot on the scale of maturity.

He reached a hand out not exactly to catch Clint as he shifted rolling around to nearly upright, but just to have a point of connection as they talked, fingers drumming idly against him where they touched.

Matt grinned as Clint cycled through his options, the initial ask, the question of more than one guess, before giving up without even trying. "Oh you know," Matt chuckled softly, "More of Hopper's exciting maybe dating life and his unwillingness to define things." He shrugged a bit, it was silly, but it was the kind of every day silly that they so often missed around here when they were dealing with fog monsters and multiplying fuzzballs.

So he wasn't going to feel bad about being amused by something almost entirely pointless.

That was true. They had talked about some things. Their relationship. What they wanted for dinner, sometimes. Plans later in the week and their schedules. And only one of those things had been prompted because someone had pointed out that Clint could occasionally be a Cheaty McCheatyson -- if he wasn't in a clearly defined relationship that he felt good about. So they'd defined it.

So far, it was working out well.

And it was, apparently, not working out swimmingly for a few people who had decided not to do that, despite Matt's very wise (free) advice.

"Still?" Clint asked, eyebrows raising and interest obviously won over. "That's so embarrassing," he bumped knees with Matt, leaned in for a smooch or three. "Tell me everything."

"I know, right?" Matt agreed with a soft huff and a shake of his head, grinning when Clint's mouth pressed to his. It was very rarely he was in the position to be the mature healthy relationship sort of person in his sphere so now that he was he was going to enjoy this situation to the fullest extent.

Matt made himself comfortable leaning nearer to Clint just a little bit more, all casual like, closer than he'd get with most people, but Clint was special. "I'll give Hopper one small concession, he can admit that he likes him." Matt admitted, which could have been like pulling teeth for some people, thankfully Hopper wasn't one of them.

"Of course now he's caught up in a what if I ruin things by saying something spiral, so I don't know how much credit I can give him for that." Relationships could be hard, especially when you were doing something new, but Matt very firmly believed that his friends probably deserved a little bit of true honesty in their lives just as much as they deserved to get dicked down.

It was kind of fun being the wise and put together ones, for once. It was so rare. Kind of novel. If Clint was a worse person, he probably would have made a habit of lording it over people, at least a little bit.

Luckily, he wasn't. He liked to say at the level of only semi-obnoxious.

"He got that far? That's something. It's like, super obvious. And I don't even know him. I feel like I ought to at some point. This town really doesn't have enough arson." Because that was how police officers and fire departments overlapped, right? Or... one of these days their friends groups would overlap a bit more. Clint leaned his shoulder up against Matt's until they were a perfect balance of weight. One wrong move would send them toppling, no doubt.

"I mean. I get it. That's a pretty worrying thought, you know? I'm like, 85% worried I'll fuck something up by breathing, some days."

Matt grinned, it was super obvious, the way Hopper talked about John whenever they text was the kind of obnoxious that made it all the way back around to adorable. And Matt was more than happy to give him shit about it up to a certain point. But Matt really did think Hopper could get to the point of talking about what he wanted and not have it end terribly even if John wasn't exactly on the same page. But Matt had a good feeling about those two.

"You should meet him," Matt agreed, "I've been talking you up already," He added with an overly fond grin. But it was easy to be overly fond when it was Clint after all. "Told him about some of your very best features." He promised.

When Clint admitted to his own percentage of worry Matt shook his head, "It's gonna take a little bit more than breathing to fuck this up." He assured him, both because it was true and because Matt knew he was more than willing to work through whatever fuck ups might end up happening to try and derail them as they navigated this relationship together. "I mean a hiccup might be another story."

"I really need to," Clint said, earnest. "I don't know how I've accidentally avoided it for so long." He'd talked to all kinds of police officers back home. Sometimes he wasn't even in trouble. Actually, usually he wasn't. Perk of being a superhero on the side of the law, or whatever. Sorry, Matt. "I'll have to just wander into the station, see how awkward all of that is in person. And was it my ass or my arms?" He asked of his best feature.

He huffed out a little laugh over Matt's honesty and joke all in one. "You have no idea how long I've been holding this sneeze in," he lamented. "But no -- I know. I mean. Y'know. I did infest our house with nonstop breading fuzz balls, and you didn't send me packing, so..." So maybe it was fine.

"You've got skills," Matt reasoned simply - that and they all had their own things they were doing with their lives here, adjusting to a new kind of normal that was vastly different from what they'd been doing before. He chuckled at the idea of Clint wandering into the police station just to see how things felt there. "If it's anywhere near as awkward as it is through text, it'll be palpable." He promised Clint. As the frequently awkward one Matt was delighted to find himself on this side of the equation for a change.

"Your thighs," Matt said without hesitation or guile, pleased to be able to talk up Clint just a little bit even just here between the two of them. He'd gladly talk up every bit of Clint if given the room for it. "And your winning personality."

Laughing softly, Matt was relieved at least this part of his life was easy these days. It was much needed considering the place they were stuck. "In fairness to you, they did seem kind of cute before they were coming out of the walls." But if they could handle that, and fog monsters, and weird lobster celebrations, he was pretty sure they could handle plenty more.

"True skills. Firefighter skills? Police avoidance skills? Both. I'll take both. And you know what? Thighs were a dark horse in this race, but I'm glad they won out, in the end. Sorry, for you, I think I'd have to go ass then dimples. It was a hard choice, actually."

Was he turning this conversation around on Matt? Yes. Yes, of course he was. Because he was better at giving compliments than he was at taking them, and also because Matt deserved them. "And obviously your personality, too. That's a given."

He flopped over, so that his head was in Matt's lap, one leg over the top of the couch. "Hey," he said, seriously after a second. "I actually really do like... appreciate being the mature ones, or whatever. That we can talk."

"Both very important skills to have for one in your line of work," Matt agreed, well maybe lines of work, but that wasn't really the point now was it? "I'll take you in to meet him though, you can show off your skills in person for a change."

Matt laughed, Clint was good at that, just taking something and running with it - it was the sort of thing Matt could use a little practice in, he was more a shut up and get off a good single remark when he was ready for it. But Clint? He always had something to say. "Of course, absolutely a given." Matt agreed with him simply, a fond smile on his face, petting fingers through Clint's hair when he shifted again, now head on Matt's leg while they talked.

"It's good." He agreed, being able to talk openly about who he was - not having to hide himself was a welcome change to his dating life. "We're good at this," The talking, the being together, being the mature ones. "I guess having a break from the roof top exploits makes this part of life easier to manage." It was what Foggy had told him time and time again, but there hadn't really been much choice in the matter back home - and here? Well things were different here. In so many ways.

"Maybe I'll pal up," Clint said with a laugh. "And you'll invite me fishing next time. I'm great at boats." And being generally friendly, actually. But mostly boats.

He let out a little sigh that was nothing but happy when Matt got his fingers into his hair. There was nothing better in this world than a good hair petting and scalp scratching, and Matt damn well knew it.

"We are good at this," Clint agreed, because it was nice to take credit once in a while. He offered a beat of a pause before he rubbed at the shell of his ear, pushing his 'aid out of the way a little to achieve it. "I can't say I don't --y'know. Miss it though. The roof top stuff."

"Yeah?" He asked, an easy grin on his face as Clint assured him he was good at boats. "And how are you with fishing?" He asked, as if he had any great fishing skills himself. But it was just an easy fun sort of thing to do, whiling a way a few hours and goofing off while Hopper did all the real work of the fishing.

It was strange in a way, to find a little bit of peace knowing all it had taken was to be entirely removed from what his life had been. It probably said a lot about his potential to actually make anything lasting back home, but Matt wasn't going to think about that - instead he was just going to enjoy the pleased sighs he could draw out of Clint at moments like these.

"I know what you mean," He admitted, of course he'd gotten into law to try and solve the problems he'd been all too aware of through the system, but he'd known even then there was only so much he could do about it that way. And the same seemed to be true here, even with the more senior position he now held within the system. "It's not like things are perfect here," But it was different in many ways.

"It was easier to do all of that when it was people I was dealing with, not..." He lifted a shoulder, not monsters. Not like what they'd had to deal with for months on end here.

"Probably bad," Clint said, shrugging one shoulder lazily. He wasn't even good at it when it came to Pro Bass Fishing on console, so he doubted he was any better in real life. But honestly, it'd never come up before and he didn't feel overly sad about that. Touching the insides of fish didn't hold a lot of appeal.

"It's not perfect here," he said, arching his back to get his head to but against Matt's hands, a demand for more. "But it's not the worst place I've ever been. You're here. And you're cooler than the other you that I know." Not everyone got that distinction, though Clint was too nice to generally say so. But Matt, he was clearly biased over.

"But yeah it's -- kinda hard to shoot arrows at mist monsters and come up on top. I wouldn't mind a bit of a win one of these days. Like, a real one."

"Perfect," Matt huffed softly, "You'll fit right in." Fish were meant to spend their time in water and Matt had never been all that eager to deny them of that right, so a little bit of pretending was exactly his style.

He didn't bother hiding his grin as Clint shifted and arched like an overeager cat in his lap demanding more attention. And who was he to deny him that? "It could be worse," Matt agreed, "You're cooler than the other you too," He admitted, "Not that I know him - but he's on the news." They all were, those Avenger types. Matt got it, what they were doing, but he also was part of a contingent of people who were having to clean up the stuff that didn't rate high enough to concern them. So they were all operating on a bit of a handicap from his point of view.

But even if that wasn't the case - Clint was in a rank all his own. And Matt wasn't ashamed to say as much.

"There's doesn't seem to be a lot of room for people like us here," Monsters and magic were a little bit beyond him. "I guess there could be something eventually, but -" He shrugged, fingers curling against Clint's scalp gently, tugging lightly.

"It's okay, you can call him boring. He sounded really boring, from what I've heard." Clint wasn't going to say so, but most of the Avengers from that other world seemed kind of ... dulled down, in a way. It wasn't their fault, and they were all still pretty cool (minus himself, obviously, who sucked) but they just didn't seem like they'd been through all that much. They were like little baby Avengers, but older than you'd expect all at the same time.

"I dunno," Clint said after a beat. "I feel like I'm pretty much always working out of my paygrade, back home." Which was to say that if they really, really wanted to do something, they could at least try. But -- " But, but, but. "It's not the point. The point is, I like coming home to you." Clint decided on, and tugged at Matt's shirt in order to pull himself up and Matt down at the same time, for a kiss.

Matt chuckled, "He's painfully boring," He couldn't deny it, and even if it wasn't true it was enough that this Clint was his, how could any other compare? "You think the others are like that too?" He wondered, he hadn't spent a ton of time comparing the people from home to who they might have been in another world, partially because it didn't really matter their counterparts hadn't been here, but he couldn't help but be curious.

He supposed he got that, even if this Clint was different than the one back home he was an Avenger, that was a different paygrade than the one Matt tended to work in, this place was full of monsters and magic and maybe that was a little bit better suited to it - but he wasn't really sure any of that mattered, they weren't heroes on their own here. Almost everyone who showed up here had some kind of ability or skill or magic, it was all different.

He hummed, a smile pulling up the corners of his mouth when Clint tugged at him pulling him down to meet his mouth. Matt let his fingers shift, less of a tug and more cradling the back of Clint's head as he kissed him. "I want to go on coming home to you."

"They're all different," Clint said with a one shouldered shrug that said he wasn't super sure. "Maybe not boring but... less seasoned, maybe. And not in the spice way. Never mind, its weird."

And it didn't really matter.

The kiss was really what mattered, here. And Clint put his all into that, until they were both a little breathless, and maybe, possibly, up to rolling off the couch and commandeering the bed from Lucky, after all. "Good thing, too. You're stuck with me."
