January term ends on the 29th. In theory, this should be no surprise if you've been studying for your final.

Someone a great deal cooler than me informed me that a lot of you use Instagram to communicate. As someone with a perpetual allergy to social media of any kind (read: snobbery), what will having an Instagram account provide me that having a social media "journal" on this platform can't?

More specifically, I left Facebook due to my inability to keep myself from making acquaintances' great aunts cry over their terrible political opinions. Am I going to have to fight any of you on Instagram? Am I going to be approached by someone working from home who thinks I'd be a great fit for the bottom segment of a pyramid scheme? How are the privacy settings? For those of you still in school: is Instagram sufficiently uncool enough that none of my students are on it?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

I hope "help" means what you think it does. No pets - I travel and work a lot, it doesn't seem fair.

Cats are actually underrated contributors to the field of linguistics.

How's that work?

I... wish I were joking, but a few years ago, a group of linguists in Europe who needed better hobbies and more fulfilling connections with other humans created a research project called "Melody in Human-Cat Communication", or "Meowsic" for short. Essentially, they studied how cat sounds are nearly always used to communicate with humans rather than other cats - especially meows (hisses, of course, have universal application). Among other things, this project recorded cats from all over the world and determined that cat sounds do have regional "accents" based off of the sounds that they hear coming from their humans. Dogs, on the other hand, do bark and make most of their noises for the benefit of other dogs, so as a result their linguistic variation did not vary.

Huh. Holy shit, something I definitely did not know. Cats with southern accents. Cats with Bostonian accents.

Cats with French accents get all the love.

I lived in Paris for a year, can confirm this is true.

Always invigorating when eyewitness accounts support academic theories.
