2021 Results Post
Greetings!
Welcome to the Drabble Day Awards Presentation of 2021. My intrepid entrepreneurial daughter, Alexis, hostess of this venerated event, has asked me to present this year's results. As you are surely aware, I am no stranger to awards shows.
And it seems like it was only yesterday that Mister Hal Holbrook was offering me congratulations on my very first Daytime Em-my-no-mi-na-tion for a little show called Sunrise Bay...
But this night is not about me! No, tonight, we are here to praise the little people who I'm told worked tirelessly day and night in service of this decade-long literary liturgy. And so, my dear bébés, it is with immense pride and jubilation that I welcome you to the incomparable consummation of this Decade of Drabbles.
Here to share with us the many memorable moments of this splendiferous spectacle is my son, David Rose.
Thank you. So I'm told that the very first Drabble Day was held in May 2011 at no7_awz - I'm not sure what that was. The theme was AWZ. Again, I have no idea. Apparently there is a Masterlist of the event, but I definitely didn't bother to count them.
There were 106, David.
The next year, the topic of Drabble Day was Fanfic Tropes, and if you'd like to relive the distant past for whatever reason, you can find the Results and the Masterlist here. Apparently there were 175 drabbles that year in 45 different fandoms, written by just 6 participants. That can't be right, surely?
There was no Drabble Day in 2013 or 2014 ... probably because everyone was recovering, to be honest.
But in 2015, the theme Hair (All That Matters) drew out 9 writers in 54 fandoms, for a total of 154 drabbles. Well, it would, wouldn't it?
Apparently this was the first year that Vikings Punk AU debuted. I don't know what that means. Anyway, you can look up the Results and Masterlist for yourself.
The next year, 2016, saw an abbreviated 12-hour Drabble Day on the theme of Bread. Well, you wouldn't want all that gluten, that makes sense. There were 7 participants in 47 fandoms with - wow! - 124 drabbles. That must be because of the carbs. Here are the Results and Masterlist.
There was another lapse in 2017...
But you came back bold in 2018 with Colours. Ten participants, 64 fandoms and 235 drabbles - a new record!
This year was dominanted by Roman gladiators. And shouldn't they all be, really? Get the Results and Masterlist here.
The year 2019 was a special challenge, with double prompts for the theme IJ Mood Theme. In just 20 hours, 7 participants wrote 199 drabbles in 49 fandoms. Results and masterlist here.
Which brings us to 2020, and A Very Special Pandemic Drabble Day.
That year had the highest number of participants yet - 13 - who wrote 229 drabble in over 80 fandoms. Results and Masterlist are here.
Which brings us to 2021 ... because that's how years work.
Am I done? Can I leave now?
Thank you, David, for that most provocative peregrination through time. And now I'm sure you're all eagerly awaiting the results. Without further ado, here is my husband, Johnny Rose, who just as Moses transited the tablets of God down from the mountaintop, will share the final tally of this year's event.
Hello everyone, it's an honour to be here. I've been asked me to look over your numbers. Now, I am a qualified accountant, but I am a bit confused.
Psst, Dad! I told you! They wrote 100-word stories for 24 hours! Drabbles!
All right then. Well, first, I just have to say...
In just 24 hours on the last weekend in May 2021, there were 239 drabbles posted, beating the record set in 2018 and setting a new record for the most drabbles ever!
There were approximately 66 fandoms represented - this was a challenging number to arrive at, owing to the fact of multiple crossovers and the inclusion of fandoms such as "Måneskin with puppies."
However, this feat was accomplished by only 10 writers, which is truly an accomplishment. You should all be very proud of yourselves! Back to you, Moira.
Thank you! And now, we have to take a short break. We'll be back after this very important message from our sponsor.
After the break...
