"Washington cannot be left alone with his devices, indecisive from crisis to crisis…" Alexander stops reading, crumples the newsprint. "They really have no idea."

John regrets bringing him this news. These days, his friend looks beyond fatigue, more like a phantom than a man, weary from burdens no single man should bear. He reaches for Alexander's shirt; it takes only the gentlest tug and the man collapses in his arms. Bearing his friend's full weight is lighter than the longing in his heart. John wants but doesn't dare to kiss him, only whispering, "Alexander, you're the closest friend I've got."
