[Public, accidentally so.]

[Toby's writing is sharp and pointed with a heavy hand, angry.]

You authorized her doctors to change her medications?! To something experimental? Without talking to me?

[It takes a while, but eventually. Jan's own writing is unbothered, but slow in coming, as if he's weighing each and every word.]

I'm sorry, Toby. I tried! You have messages from me and the facility.

If you can't get hold of me, then you don't change it.

I only had three days to decide and if I passed, then we never would have been able to do it again and then it would just be what-ifs forever! It could really help!

She's doing fine on her current medications! You don't make decisions about this on your own, Jan!

It could help!

[Pen press.] Why not? You do it all the time.

[His pen presses against the page long enough to leave a puddle of ink.]

I'm the doctor, January. I went to school in order to help people like our mother. I research the medications that she is on, the treatments that are decided on. This is what I went to school to do.

But they're doctors too! They wouldn't suggest something if it was bad, Toby.

They aren't her children. They're more eager to get patients on the clinical study than they are whether or not how helpful it will be to them!

[Probably as rude as Jan is ever going to get.] Don't be so cynical.

[Sharp, tight writing.] Would you like me to enlighten you with tales of treatments in the past? Where family members made uninformed decisions about treatments? I've got books on the subject, January, and I'd be more than happy to read you a few bedtime stories from it.

But I talked with them. It wasn't uninformed. They told me. I don't know the science behind it, but they said it could be life-changing. That's a good thing!

And doctors said lobotomies would cure the mentally ill! That's certainly life changing, isn't it?

That's not a fair comparison! Just because some people somewhere did something once doesn't mean it's going to happen here! Tell me how many procedures or trials did you turn down for her, Toby? She could be better

[Okay, no. That's as rude as Jan is ever going to get. He instantly goes quiet, and can't even make himself punctuate his last sentence.]

And it could harm her. You didn't think of that, did you?

You can make the decisions for her now, January, since you seem to enjoy doing so.

Fine, Toby. I won't go see her anymore and you can keep her to yourself again.

[And with that, Jan is doooone.]
