[text to wren h.]

[Early morning. After his last shift before Christmas ends.]

Hi.

[locked to jack c.]

Scale of one to ten, how traumatic was it? Not too bad? I think our childhoods were normal.

[locked to matt + jenny]

How'd we all like being kids again?

[...] You can't tell her this, but she says she scared you. That you thought she was strange, and you were innocent and she tried to mess you up. It's that, I think, and the part of her childhood that I saw. It brought back the past, in a way.

I don't know either. She doesn't believe me when I tell her she's wrong. [...] She's nothing but good for me and I hate that she can't see it.

Scared me? I was thirteen and she was a beautiful sixteen year old who was interested in me, of course I was scared. But not in the way she means. And she didn't try to mess me up. She was trying to pay me back for something, I think. I don't think she knew many ways to pay things back, back then. It was sweet, in its way.

[...] I hesitate to bring this up with any of us, but we might be nearing the age where she could actually go and talk to someone about it. Someone professional. Normally I wouldn't mention it, but considering she just had another baby, some of it could also be post-partum, that whole thing. Just a thought.

She wasn't interested in Sweet? [Cursor blink. He will not overreact. He will not.] Yeah, well, she doesn't see it that way.

[...] I can't tell her I think she should see a psychiatrist, Jack. I barely managed to convince her that she's not a sociopath.

And I can see why. I'm only saying, she didn't do me any lasting damage, and I don't think that's what she was trying to do, and she shouldn't worry that she did.

Forget I mentioned it, then. It was just a thought, like I said.

I know that, and you know that, but she doesn't.

[Sigh.] It's not like I haven't thought about it myself. I just know she'd take it the wrong way. Although I guess I wouldn't be thrilled about talking to a shrink either.

I know.

No. This is a bit different, though. If it does have anything to do with post-partum, she really should see someone. That's not about being a psychopath or anything else, that's just about creating a human being. It can be pretty trying for a person, from what I understand.

She was okay before this. Things were getting better. [...] I don't know. Maybe you're right. I think I'd just make things worse than I already have if I bring it up now, though.

Maybe wait a day or two. But it is something to think about.

I'm sorry. I know that you don't want to hear it, because it makes it more real.

Don't apologize. It's not your fault.

You know me. What has that ever stopped me for apologizing for anything I feel some shred of involvement in?

She's felt like this for a long time, Jack. Even when we were kids.

I know. I guess I've always hoped it would be something she would grow out of one day, that she'd shed like a useless skin. Hasn't happened, though.

Yeah, I hoped the same. I don't know if it'll ever happen at this point. But she deserves better than to think so poorly of herself, you know?

I couldn't agree more. [...] It's just going to take time, I think. This whole thing, being kids, I think it was hard on everybody, especially for someone like Wren who has so much absolute shit in her past.
