But you make your own fortune. And if everyone in the city is a friend of Sam and Neil, why in hell are you not keeping your mouth shut, your hands off and letting alone? I know you. You don't keep quiet. You were mouthing off about the cops thing not a day or so by.

Neither would I, kid. I was a foster brat, didn't know normal when it came regular on Thursdays. That doesn't make a difference. Family doesn't make us what we are. It helps.

I thought being strong was enough. When I left the group, I did it on my own, and I thought that was important. Being strong, doing things on my own, being independent. But it's not. It's lonely. And I'm looking around at all these people who don't hesitate to jump to someone's defense, and I don't have that.

Lin told me I'd die alone. I'm wondering if he's right.
