Who: Everyone!
What: Memorial Day Parade and Block Party
When: May 29th 10 - Dark
Where: Claremont Park
Rating: PG, no warnings currently but will update as needed.
The neighborhood associations around the South and West Bronx have organized their annual Memorial Day Parade and community cookout for Saturday May 29th and everyone is invited to participate! Sure you could go to the big parade in Manhattan, but this is by locals, for locals, to remember those from the Borough who gave that 'last full measure of devotion' in defense of the nation, from the Revolution to the War On Terror.
Starting at 10 the parade will leave their staging area in the parking lot across the street from Yankee Stadium and march down 146th street to the Grand Concourse, and from there up to 170th street and end in Claremont Park. A remembrance ceremony will take place following the parade and after that festivities will begin. Characters who are known veterans will have been approached about taking part in the parade and the remembrance ceremony afterwards
The park will be decked out in red, white, and blue banners along the street and local bands will be playing until evening, with a little something for everyone over the course of the day. Thanks to generous sponsors, local veterans groups will host a cookout for the community at a reduced cost. Burger, brats, hotdogs and sides will be provided and an ice cream truck will be on site handing out cones and other frosty treats, all for $5 a ticket. Veterans and active duty military/first responders will eat for free.
Games will be set up in the park including the usual carnival types but also including bean bag toss and frisbee golf tournaments.
The food and games will wrap up around 7, but the music will go on until dark when there will be a fireworks display.
Come have fun!
