Who: Elizabeth and OPEN
What: Visiting!
Where: The beach house~
When: Sometime on beach trip
Why: To see all of her son's friends.

Elizabeth hummed to herself as she got out of the car she had rented, looking around as servants came up to her and picked up her bags for her. She had decided to spend an entire week of her time to go visit her son and all of his friends that came to her beach house. She smiled slightly at the thought of Kanaye having friends. He never inviited friends to his house, before, and now he had invited...what, how many? 17, 18? To his beach house for summer fun. Elizabeth thought this was excellent for Kanaye. He felt comfortable enough around them to bring them somewhere personal. Well, it wasn't his house, and he had never been here, but it was still an improvement!

She started walking around, trying to see if any of her son's friends were around. She dearly wanted to meet them. She also wanted to meet his girlfriend; Given how much he talked about her, he must have loved her very much, and she wanted to see the lucky girl who got all his attention.

Incoming hug! Maeko was geting slightly more used to this and didn't flinch or try to pry herself away, at least. (It was still, she was sure, improper.)

"Ah, yes. I am." She said, fidgetting. For lack of anything better to say she bowed her head again. "It's nice to meet you." She repeated.

Elizabeth let go and smiled, still laughing. "Well, that's great, Akuba-san! Kanaye really likes you, yaknow. He can't stop talking about you when I'm at home. I've gotta admit, he has't talked about any of his other girlfriends like that, so..." she shrugged. "We should talk! I want to know all about you. Maybe we can even meet your parents!"

"Really?" It was difficult not to be at least a little happy about that, even for Maeko (who was a master of being unhappy about things). Being distinct from others somehow, rather than one of many. She was almost proud of herself. Almost.

"Oh, of course-!" She started, then trailled off suddenly. After a few seconds she smiled again. "I'm happy to talk but I'm afraid the latter might not be such a good idea. My father doesn't really speak, so..."

"Of course! He goes on and on and on about you." Elizabeth smiled and sat down at a couch, patting the open cushion beside her. "It's really quite amusing, seeing how much he likes you. It's...." Elizabeth didn't say any more, she just shook her head. "Anyway."

Elizabeth nodded. "Ah. Why is that?" she asked before giggling. "Shame, though. But at least we can talk!" She grinned and bounced in her seat. "I'll tell you anything you wanna know about Kanaye. So, what do you want to know?" she leaned forward and grined.

Maeko sat, a little less awkwardly formal now. If she was being judged then Elizabeth was at least being friendly about it.

"...it's? What is it?" She asked, sounding a little concerned suddenly.

"Um, because he can't." She said. It wasn't something she had been so open with until recently but since speaking to Misaki's mother she was trying to prove to heself that she had nothing to be ashamed of...at least in regards to her father. She considered the offer. It felt dishonest, talking about someone behind thier back like this. But still.

Curiosity got the better of her.

"How long has he been playing soccer? Does he have a favourite team?" She asked, starting with vaguely normal questions because she was aware of how bizarre it would be to jump right to asking about Fukimura Daichi.

"Oh, nothing." Elizabeth said quickly, shaking her head and laughing. "Just remembering some stuff about the past. Nothing really important." She smiled at Maeko. "Trust me."

"Oh, he's mute?" she said, cocking her head to the side. "I'm very sorry to hear that. I hope he's doing alright. If there's anything I can do please let me know." She bowed.

Elizabeth smiled. "Since middle school. And...he doesn't really have a favorite team. He likes playing it, more then watching it."

Maeko was unconvinced but let the matter be.

"Kind of, yes." She said, nodding. Just because she wasn't ashamed of it didn't mean she felt like going into detail.

"Ah, that makes sense." She struggled to think of a natural way to push the question session in the direction she wanted it to go. "Um, did he attend a diffent school before Nanakamado or something? I remember he said he hadn't always gone there but I don't think there's any other schools in the area with a better reputation..."

"Oh, he was home schooled. Until middle school, at least. My husband wanted him to take over the company, and he didn't like the schools here. So he just hired a tutor." Elizabeth said, matter of factly. "And they really weren't. I didn't like it, cuz Kanaye couldn't talk to anyone, but oh well."

Maeko was starting to feel guilty for even starting this line of questionning. It was talking about a subject she knew full well was likel to be uncomfortable and it was talking behind Kanaye's back. She at least tried to act like she hadn't heard this before.

Just one more question. She promised herself. Then you can go back to talking about normal stuff.

"Ah, was that why he attended Nanakamado eventually? Because it was lonely?"

Elizabeth's smile faltered for a bit, but she started grinning again soon enough and nodded. "Yeah. He really wanted to meet with other people his own age to talk to. I mean, his only friend was..." she paused again, debating with herself. "...You do love him, right?" she asked suddenly, worried.

It probably served Maeko right for asking awkward questions herself.

That said, she'd spent a month quizzing herself on this. She knew the answer well enough. She just wasn't used to being asked by people who weren't herself.

"Of course I do." She said, sounding about as confident in the answer as she did about anything else

Elizabeth nodded. "Of course, of course..." she said to herself. She looked at Maeko quizzically and nodded. "...Never tell anyone about this, alright?" she said, leaning in close. "But...well. His tutor died...and..." The woman shook her head. "Sorry, this is probably too much.

Maeko wasn't sure how surprised she should pretend to be about the news. In the end, she didn't pretend at all and just nodded quietly, staring at her hands. Her nervous fidgetting, at least, was entirely genuine.

"Oh. I'm very sorry." She continued to stare at her hands in silence a little longer before she finally looked up again. "Were they close?"

Elizabeth nodded. "Yes. They were. Fukimura-san was Kanaye's only friend...I know he still blames himself for his death. It's...quite sad, really. He was a nice boy, but now..." She sighed. "I love him, but it's like he doesn't really care about me anymore. I'm quite disappointed."

"Oh..." It was nothing that she didn't know already. But it was still pretty awkward hearing it from someone else. She decided, chickenning out of this line of questionning, that maybe it was best she didn't ask what happenned. She wanted to know, maybe if she knew then theyre would be something she'd be able to say to help, but she didn't really want to make anyone upset by asking too much.

"He's nice." She said, shaking her head. "He's been nothing but kind and helpful to me for a while now."

The conversation continued to be deeply uncomfortable. Maeko couldn't really think of much to say that would help at all, Kanaye had never really said much that contradicted the 'doesn't really care' thing.

"I'm sure he does care." She answered eventually. "Isn't it normal to be awkward with your parents at this age?"

Elizabeth nodded but sighed. "That's good, but..." She shook her head. "Nevermind."

"I'm sure, but I'd prefer it if he wasn't awkward. I do want what's best for him, but he won't listen."

The topic was gone. Maeko felt relieved and was more than happy to heed the 'nevermind'.

"I'm sorry. It really isn't my place to involve myself in all this at all, is it?" She said after a while. She meant it, too. Involving herself in other people's family issues was pretty much consistently a horrible idea that caused more problems than it solved.

Elizabeth shook her head. "It's fine. You are his girlfriend, after all. You might be part of this family one day, even!" She said as she winked at the younger girl and laughed. "I'm only joking, though it would be nice to have a daughter-in-law as nice as you."

What. What. What.

What.

Even as a joke it took Maeko a good few internal applications of the word 'what' before she could respond. And even when she could she wasn't sure how to.

The fact that this was actually less awkward than what was just discussed was saying a lot.

She gave a laugh that sounded about as real as it was despite her best efforts.

"I've never really thought that far ahead."

Elizabeth nodded and smiled. "Of course not! There's still college to think about, and you're not even out of high school. Thinking that far ahead would be overthinking things, it'd just be stupid. Oh, speaking about your parents, do they know that you're dating him?" Elizabeth asked, still grinning.

Maeko personally would have worded it as 'there's still college to think about and I may yet end up dying before I hit seventeen' but oh well.

"It's never really come up in conversation." She said, deciding to go for honesty here. Misaki's mother bringing the topic up on parent's night under the assumtion that her father was aware had been problematic enough. "So I don't think I've ever mentionned it."

Elizabeth looked at Maeko slowly and nodded, smiling happily. "Then it'll be great when I tell them the news! Of course, you and Kanaye will be there, after all, don't want to talk behind your backs!" She laughed. "Still, I'm amazed you haven't told them. How long have you two been dating?"

Maeko managed, though sheer willpower, not to look horrified by the prospect and instead concentrated on the second question.

"Huh? For about-" She counted time on her fingers, caught herself counting in fortnights instead of weeks and briefly wondered what the hell was wrong with her. "It was a month and a half at first. Then not. Now it's been about two weeks? Almost, anyway. It's not been that long."

"Then not?" Elizabeth said, confused. "What do you mean, then not? And that isn't that long..." She said, nodding slowly. "Oh well! Love takes time."

"Hey, about your parents, what're the names again? I want to meet them, one of these days, so I'll need to know their names. It's not like I can call them "Akuba-san and Akuba-san", right?" She laughed at her own little joke.

"Oh, sorry. We had an argument before so. So yeah. That's what I meant."

"Given names?" It took more thought than it really should have. Maeko never adressed or referred to her parents by given name. "Um, my father's given name is Michio. My mother's is Rie."
