Who: Elizabeth and OPEN
What: Visiting!
Where: The beach house~
When: Sometime on beach trip
Why: To see all of her son's friends.

Elizabeth hummed to herself as she got out of the car she had rented, looking around as servants came up to her and picked up her bags for her. She had decided to spend an entire week of her time to go visit her son and all of his friends that came to her beach house. She smiled slightly at the thought of Kanaye having friends. He never inviited friends to his house, before, and now he had invited...what, how many? 17, 18? To his beach house for summer fun. Elizabeth thought this was excellent for Kanaye. He felt comfortable enough around them to bring them somewhere personal. Well, it wasn't his house, and he had never been here, but it was still an improvement!

She started walking around, trying to see if any of her son's friends were around. She dearly wanted to meet them. She also wanted to meet his girlfriend; Given how much he talked about her, he must have loved her very much, and she wanted to see the lucky girl who got all his attention.

Elizabeth nodded. "Yes. They were. Fukimura-san was Kanaye's only friend...I know he still blames himself for his death. It's...quite sad, really. He was a nice boy, but now..." She sighed. "I love him, but it's like he doesn't really care about me anymore. I'm quite disappointed."

"Oh..." It was nothing that she didn't know already. But it was still pretty awkward hearing it from someone else. She decided, chickenning out of this line of questionning, that maybe it was best she didn't ask what happenned. She wanted to know, maybe if she knew then theyre would be something she'd be able to say to help, but she didn't really want to make anyone upset by asking too much.

"He's nice." She said, shaking her head. "He's been nothing but kind and helpful to me for a while now."

The conversation continued to be deeply uncomfortable. Maeko couldn't really think of much to say that would help at all, Kanaye had never really said much that contradicted the 'doesn't really care' thing.

"I'm sure he does care." She answered eventually. "Isn't it normal to be awkward with your parents at this age?"

Elizabeth nodded but sighed. "That's good, but..." She shook her head. "Nevermind."

"I'm sure, but I'd prefer it if he wasn't awkward. I do want what's best for him, but he won't listen."

The topic was gone. Maeko felt relieved and was more than happy to heed the 'nevermind'.

"I'm sorry. It really isn't my place to involve myself in all this at all, is it?" She said after a while. She meant it, too. Involving herself in other people's family issues was pretty much consistently a horrible idea that caused more problems than it solved.

Elizabeth shook her head. "It's fine. You are his girlfriend, after all. You might be part of this family one day, even!" She said as she winked at the younger girl and laughed. "I'm only joking, though it would be nice to have a daughter-in-law as nice as you."

What. What. What.

What.

Even as a joke it took Maeko a good few internal applications of the word 'what' before she could respond. And even when she could she wasn't sure how to.

The fact that this was actually less awkward than what was just discussed was saying a lot.

She gave a laugh that sounded about as real as it was despite her best efforts.

"I've never really thought that far ahead."

Elizabeth nodded and smiled. "Of course not! There's still college to think about, and you're not even out of high school. Thinking that far ahead would be overthinking things, it'd just be stupid. Oh, speaking about your parents, do they know that you're dating him?" Elizabeth asked, still grinning.

Maeko personally would have worded it as 'there's still college to think about and I may yet end up dying before I hit seventeen' but oh well.

"It's never really come up in conversation." She said, deciding to go for honesty here. Misaki's mother bringing the topic up on parent's night under the assumtion that her father was aware had been problematic enough. "So I don't think I've ever mentionned it."

Elizabeth looked at Maeko slowly and nodded, smiling happily. "Then it'll be great when I tell them the news! Of course, you and Kanaye will be there, after all, don't want to talk behind your backs!" She laughed. "Still, I'm amazed you haven't told them. How long have you two been dating?"

Maeko managed, though sheer willpower, not to look horrified by the prospect and instead concentrated on the second question.

"Huh? For about-" She counted time on her fingers, caught herself counting in fortnights instead of weeks and briefly wondered what the hell was wrong with her. "It was a month and a half at first. Then not. Now it's been about two weeks? Almost, anyway. It's not been that long."

"Then not?" Elizabeth said, confused. "What do you mean, then not? And that isn't that long..." She said, nodding slowly. "Oh well! Love takes time."

"Hey, about your parents, what're the names again? I want to meet them, one of these days, so I'll need to know their names. It's not like I can call them "Akuba-san and Akuba-san", right?" She laughed at her own little joke.

"Oh, sorry. We had an argument before so. So yeah. That's what I meant."

"Given names?" It took more thought than it really should have. Maeko never adressed or referred to her parents by given name. "Um, my father's given name is Michio. My mother's is Rie."

"An argument?" Elizabeth looked troubled. "About what? Did my son do something stupid to you? I'm so sorry, he never was any good at it, I'll make sure to punish him about it..." she said quickly and apologetically.

"Alright then! When should we come over? Or would you rather come over to our house? We're always happy for visitors."

"Ah, no! It was nothing like that!" Maeko said, racking her brains for an explaination that wasn't 'he sent death threats to my friend'. "I- I was kind of ill at the time." (This was kind of true. You didn't get much more 'kind of ill' than passing out and then going to hell and being frozen until you shattered.) "So I got irritable." (This was also kind of true. She was, indeed, often irritable.) "And we fought." (Half true. She'd fought. Kanaye hadn't.) "Then we broke up."

"Ah..." This one was more awkward. Neither of those were too good in the first place. Her father didn't like guests. Her father didn't like leaving the house. "It's probably best to plan at some other time, I don't know when my father's likely to have arrangements. He works freelance so there's no guarantee even weekends would be free, I'd have to ask him myself."

Elizabeth nodded. "You two broke up over you being irritable and sick? That's odd. Most couples don't break up over stuff like that. Did he insult you or something?"

"Alright! When should we plan? I do want to meet your parents, they sound like cool people."

"Ah, no. I was just really annoyed at the time..." She smiled, waving her hands. "It doesn't really matter any more anyway."

"Um, after we're back I guess? I'll be able to ask my father when he's likely to be free then."
