Beach Day Thread

[ The private beach is gorgeous and well-kept with very little debris on the shore. There's a volleyball net set up nearby, several umbrellas, a couple of cabanas, and an unmanned snack bar with "HAPPY HOUR TIME" written in English on the front. No one is attending it, but it seems to be stocked with snacks.

At the deepest point that is not to be swum-past for most (conveniently marked with rocks), the water is chest-deep on the boys of average height. It gets deeper a further out, and there are handsails, surfboards and sea-doos in the garage ready for use. Inner tubes and other beach toys are also available. ]

Toru had forced himself to go outdoors. You were supposed to do that at the beach, right? Or perhaps if you didn't, Kanaye would nag at you until you did. So if you looked closely underneath the furthest umbrella from the water's edge, you'd see some pale thing there, sitting miserably on a towel with a (bland name) PSP in hand. On closer inspection, it was just Toru.

After a while, he sat back and just stared at the ocean. I wish I could've come here sooner... the real world isn't so ugly, is it?

The furthest umbrella, naturally, was near where Kiriko had chosen to set up her tanning spot. If she noticed Toru while laying out her towel, she made no indication of it, content to hum to herself while she put on the designer sunglasses she'd picked up for the occasion and stretched out on the sand. Eventually she looked over at Toru, chewing on the straw of her fruity drink and lifting an eyebrow.

"Why are you sitting in the shade? You need sun more than any of us."

Just as Kiriko ignored him, Toru had mostly ignored Kiriko. For him, it was easy enough to tune out the people all around him to concentrate on whatever he deemed most important. That ability had a tendency to fail when he was actually talked to, however.

"I'll get sunburned," was his reply. The truth was that he'd not thought things through enough to actually bring sunscreen, and had only realized the grave flaw in his plans once he was much closer to his destination than the house. His compromise was going to be hiding under an umbrella until the sun lowered a bit in the sky.

"...a-and, well... I didn't really want to come out here, but... I'm s'posed to, right?"

She regarded him skeptically for a second, then clicked her tongue softly and lay down on the towel again, tucking her hands behind her head and crossing her legs at the ankles.

"You won't get burned if you leave the shade for ten minutes. Just put on some sunscreen."

His dungeon had been months ago, but she still remembered what he'd said... and what she'd said back. How could a person sit around feeling sorry for themselves about how they look without even being willing to put in some effort? She sat up slightly and peered at him over the tops of her sunglasses, trying to assess how much work Toru would need. She had a couple weeks. Maybe he could start second term off on the right foot, with a little help from her.

He bit his lip and edged closer to the sun (and Kiriko), not daring to actually leave the shade of the umbrella.

"Er... about the sunscreen... I-I don't have any." Experimentally, Toru stuck one hand out into the light. The brightness of full sunlight and pale skin was blinding, but at least he didn't sparkle or fry to a crisp. He didn't want to take any chances, though, and quickly enough withdrew back to his shady safe zone.

"Do you think it'd be safe for me to run out and just borrow some?"

Another look - even the sunglasses looked disapproving.

"Of course you'd be fine. Aren't nerdy kids supposed to be smart?" She sighed sharply in exasperation then dug into her beach bag, pulled out some sunscreen and tossed it to him.

"Here. Should be high enough UV. Now go put a tanktop on or something and get out here for ten minutes at least. It'll work wonders."

Toru's face was just a tiny bit petulant as he caught the flying tube of sunscreen. "I'm not that kind of nerd! Who do you think I am, Oubai-senpai?"

He proceeded to apply sunscreen with great determination, to the point at which it had managed to make his skin look a shade paler. "Th-thanks..."

Satisfied with the job he'd done, Toru stood up and clumsily tossed the sunscreen tube back to Kiriko.

"All right, I'm... gonna try to enjoy the beach now, I guess. Thanks again!" With this, he boldly stepped forth into the bright sun and towards the water.

"Hey, Ishinomori-kun. Are you a good swimmer?"

"She sells sea shells by the sea shore," Misaki swirled around the tongue twister as she walked along the beach dressed in a purple bikini with a wrap around her waist. Swinging along as she walked was a pale green and blue bucket that clearly was something that a child might carry with them to make sand castle. However this one rattled with the sound of many tiny clinking noises.

As she walked she looked up and waved at Kiriko and toru, "Hello. You two wouldn't want to help hunt for sea shells would you?"

A large inner tube was floating around near the rocks. At first glance it seemed to be abandonned but every now and then the top of a head could be seen emerging from the middle of it.

Maeko had somehow managed to fall through the hole in the middle of the inner tube. She would be more annoyed about this development and about her inability to climb back up into it but she was enjoying the calm. And she hadn't been eaten by a fish yet.

That had, of course, been a major concern.

Seiko was stood at the edge of the water staring out across the sea. Under her arm was a large orange and lime green inner tube that Kanaye had lent to her. She hadn't really been surprised by the colour and she was looking forward to finally getting in the water. She looked around for a moment in hope of coming across someone to ask (force) into coming into the sea with her. After all it would be more fun with someone else.

Some of the others were down the beach, but she couldn't make out who they were so didn't want to call out to them.

Masami, dressed in a daring red sports bikini, had set up her beach umbrella and spread her towel out in the shade underneath it. While it certainly was tempting to just lay down on the towel, close her eyes, and relax to the sound of the waves crashing against the beach, Masami decided that she might as well take advantage of the water and go for a swim, so she left her little setup where it was and headed down.

She stopped near Seiko at the water's edge to just gaze out over the ocean to the horizon. "It's a nice view, isn't it Yukizaki-senpai?"

Seiko turned to greet Masami with a smile, the huge obnoxiously coloured inner tube swinging as she spun round.

"Masami-chan! Hey!" she nodded her head enthusiastically. "Its so beautiful here, so calm. It feels really safe, getting away from Iburi is just what I think we all needed."

She eyed Masami's bikini and sighed. "My Mother repacked my bag-" she gestured to the revealing bikini she was wearing. "-otherwise I'd be wearing the swimsuit you helped me pick out Masami-chan."

Tom walked out onto the beach where his friends where, but he was, for the moment, oblivious to their presence. He stared at the crashing waves. Over the past few days a thought had been slowly creeping up on him, and for some reason today, he couldn't think of much else.

His mind still set on his recent "death" in Paradise. He had really died hadn't he? But then injuries recieved outside Paradise never healed as well as inside. (The number of fights he'd been in where Kondo-chan had completely healed a large slash down his chest, yet a split lip had still barely scabbed over.) So was it a real injury? If it as a real death, that meant dying didn't matter. Not in that place.

And the death itself nagged at him. He hadn't died defending anyone, he hadn't sacrificed himself to take the shadow down. The truth of it was in terms of wining and losing, he had lost that fight. He needed to be stronger. And as soon as he returned brom the beach he was going to start working to do it.

"Ah... I was wondering why you weren't wearing that one," Masami replied. A moment of silence passed before she noticed Tom standing not too far away, looking out over the waves with a pensive expression.

"Sagaki-senpai," she called, hoping to get his attention.

"My Mother has her own fashion ideas."

Seiko nodded with a shrug, resting the inner tube on the ground carefully. As Masami went silent she too looked around, but didn't notice Tom until Masami called him. She turned round with a smile and a wave.

"Hey Tom!" she called waving frantically, a little louder than Masami had, after all she wasn't as restrained as the younger girl, and far more excitable.

Tom turned to look at the two women calling his name. This time prepared for their skimpy outfits, but he was still thankful for the fact that he was wearing sunglasses. He walked over to them and bowed his head slightly, first to Seiko, and then Masami.

"Seiko, Sakuraba-san. It's good to see you." He tried to sound friendly, but it was hard to tear his thoughts away from that rather distracting event.

Masami bowed back to Tom. "How are you doing, senpai? The beach is nice, isn't it?" she said.

She noticed that despite his friendly tone, there was an edge of... something in his voice, and he seemed a bit distracted. "Is something bothering you, senpai? Maybe I can help if you want to talk..."

Well, it would've been a perfect time to get to know people, including people that were in his class. He never realized how good he was at blending in with the classroom walls until he discovered none of the other recognized him. Granted, class 3-B was easy to get lost in. There were plenty of noisier students in the class. Oh well. He didn't really care, but how in the world did he begin getting to know these people. From what he had seen so far they weren't that bad, just... an interesting group of people to have together.

Isao had put on his pink plaid swim trunks and headed out to the beach along with everyone else with the good intention of having a few good conversations. At least until he spotted an unused shovel and pail. This was the first time he had been to a real beach in quite some time, so he felt no shame in doing something he hadn't done in years. He was going to build a sand castle first.

He found a spot, started digging and building up a mound of sand, and attempted to form some sort of structure. He was nothing of an architect, but at least the foundation didn't appear too misshapen.

"Hey, are you making a sandcastle?"

Up from her alloted tanning time and on her way to the shore with a towel slung over one shoulder, Kiriko paused to investigate this apparently fascinating development. She canted her head, then knelt to better inspect his progress, glancing at an untended bucket and smoothing the damp sand inside of it level.

"I haven't built one since I was a kid." She grinned. Fun memories of lopsided and inevitably doomed sandcastles were drifting through her mind. She could probably make something bigger, better and a lot more water-resistant now, but for the moment she was content to watch Isao do it under pretense of getting-to-know-you conversation.

"You're a third year, right, Shimohama-san?"

"I guess so," Isao replied flatly, remaining focused on the work. It may not have been the most decisive answer in the world, but at the beginning stages it was hard to tell. He was going for a castle, but somehow he did have a sinking feeling that it was going to turn out more like a more generic building of some kind. "It's been a few years since I've even been to the beach."

He was hesitant to give much more to the conversation than another nod. However, that would've been counter productive to the intentions he had set out with. He was great at blending in with wallpaper, so he shouldn't try to blend in with the sand, too. And it was a good start seeing as she appeared to be one of the more normal people to talk with.

"Yeah, that's right," he finally looked over at her and nodded. "And you're... a first year? How is that going for you?"

Fishing

It was the next day after arriving at the private beach, and Kouchisei had already decided Kanaye Satou had no dignity. This was too ostentatious. Large. Show-offish.

More difficult was the ability to accept the freedom to distract himself with things when previous things had been tightly controlled and safe. The route to preserving his sanity had begun with begrudging acceptance instead of being rude about the matter - he avoided making a fool of himself. It was a trial but it was also something he had grown used to, and what got him through life's problems.

He'd half-forget his problems fishing for crabs. Surf-fishing was what his dad had called it. Shallow bays, creeks - the whole business with fresh and frozen bait made him queasy for a second, and then he would let his father hook it on the line and do the work. However, he was older now. He sat cross-legged, line in hand, watching the tide push forward and then retreat. It was good to leave his thoughts and conscience on the run.

He was a little unsure at first since this was the first time he'd done it alone, but his father had seemed happy when he'd asked and now he saw why he liked it so much.

Wandering along the beach in the daytime, Misaki had been mulling over the chance to talk to Keiichi. It was strange to her, she didn't like the idea of being dumped, but at the same time she was okay with it in a way. It was part of life, she guessed, and while it did hurt and anger her some, she still cared about Keiichi, so it was weird feelings that were bubbling up and down inside her. Walking did wonders for this, it made her calm, able to breath. She wondered if maybe she could ever buy a house down here and just sit by herself...thinking.

Half way through her walk she noticed Kouchisei sitting in the sand with a line in his lap near the tide. She crossed over quietly, walking a bit in the water, then back over to where he was. Putting her feet in was the first step to overcoming her fear of what was in the water. So long as she didn't get any weird fungus on her feet she'd put her legs in next time.

Smiling some she leaned over some to look where his line was cast, "What are you doing Oubai-senpai?"

Kouchisei was holding the line firmly, waiting for any movement. His reaction to Misaki's voice was a delayed one; he shifted his legs, freeing the left that had frozen, and then tucked them back under.

"Fishing," he said, not giving her more to go on. There weren't a lot of people here who he felt would make good company, personally. They were all too different.
