Kozue had put this off, put this off, and put this off, and then put it off some more. But part of the Kondo Family Obon Tradition was her parents and grandparents interrogating her about what her summer homework was, if she had started it, and why she was out having fun when she hadn't started it. And there were precious few days left until she had to go home and face the yearly music (well, it was more than yearly, but this particular tune was an annual favorite).

Thus, she had finally dragged herself back into the school, and down to the library, and for the first time, cracked open her books. She actually hadn't the slightest idea what the homework was, and now she was set up at a table with an iced coffee from one of the vending machines, staring at her texts in a mixture of confusion and resigned glumness.

Ugh. Every year she hoped it was an elaborate hoax and the assignment sheet would actually read "You Fell For It! No Homework!"

Thus far, she had been disappointed every year.
